The stairway was thin, cutting through the floor in the little antechamber that joined the important nuns' rooms so close to the stone floor that the girls had to hold their arms straight at their sides as they descended. As they descended, the winding stair shifted from a cobblestone construction to cut natural stone as the claustrophobic passage led into a small, very wet, steamy cave. A single whiff of the air told Karaz that the cave was full of firedamp, and could explode if exposed to flame. She halted the others, and ensured that Alia's magical light was used instead as they continued.
The cavern was small, with stalactites hanging low enough to make the taller girls a bit nervous about where they put their heads. Warm water dripped down the white stone walls and periodically onto the girls, where it ran in slow rivulets into a steaming central pool, ripping in the beautiful metallic blues and greens of mineral taint. Through the steam and the dim light, only a few anomalous features were visible: a rusted iron stake hammered into the soft stone floor, attached to a long chain and prisoner's collar, a hardened ceramic idol of Saale, and an empty and scrubbed copper chamber pot off to the side, and a steel spike, worn with use, but resharpened.
Scrawled onto the walls and floor of everywhere the chain could reach were writings and drawings; crude, almost incomprehensible things: suns, demons, prayers and curses. They were clearly the product of a fevered mind, or minds, and the girls could see why, already, they were feeling woozy...
