Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: SOPA, PIPA, MEGAUPLOAD, AND THE FUTURE OF THE FORUMS

but i've seen on some forum about SOPA AND PIPA are already solved.
SOPA/PIPA have been SHELVED, not solved. Meaning they could potentially resurface either as they were, or edited to (hopefully) NOT allow abuse (or at least mitigate it to negligible levels).

The EFF and Carpathia Hosting have now set up MegaRetrieval. I would imagine that requesting to get your pirated files back is a bad idea, since they're trying to assess the scope of the non-pirated users.

The fight will never be over, because THAT is the nature of Freedom, for any sense.
This is the truest statement I think I have ever seen my good man (or woman...not one to judge >_>)

Knowledge is also power, so wield what you can to fight for that Freedom.
As much as it pains me to says this, the government is rarely so forthcoming with ALL the information pertaining to a subject. The bits and pieces of info we the people do get is very often twisted and skewed by the politicians and media so that they try and make us sympathize and understand their reasons without ever having to make the decision ourselves. "Oh, Congress and that pretty news lady say this is bad, so it must be." Most people are either too lazy or busy to even try and find all the information that may or may not even be available to them.

We outnumber the paper-pushers, right? :D
If by "we" you mean those of us with an open mind who are willing to actually question our leaders, then no "we" don't. Most Americans (heaven forbid I should say most western people...) are blind, bible-thumping (not hating on religion here, so don't flame me...) sheep who, as I said above, simply take whatever is said by politicians or the media as truth because it conforms to their sense of morality and "Hey, I elected them to run the country, so their thoughts are my thoughts, right?"

Also, ACTA was never made public in the US -officially- for reasons of "Possible Compromise of National Security". Hmm.
Oh jeez, what doesn't qualify as "Possible Compromise of National Security" these days? Can't even count the number of shaving cream cans I've left at airports around the country...

Also, I feel I must respond to some of this America bashing that has been going on. While I admit that our country is not perfect (show me one that is and I shall show you a liar ladies and gents), it is still in my honest opinion the greatest country in the world. Why? Because it is MY COUNTRY. I was born here, I was raised here, I fight for what I believe in here, and God willing I will die here. And I pity anyone who doesn't feel the same way about their own country. And if you don't? Well what exactly have you done to try and make it better?

Anyway, back to the actual topic of this thread, I will be signing the petition against ACTA and continuing to fight this threat no matter the form it takes and I hope you all will do the same.

P.S.
Wow, this is the most indepth discussion I've ever had on a porn forum...end of the world must be a'comin ya'll....

Not sure what to say but ACTA got signed by certain "countries" and I still don't know why they bypassed Congress to do it. Talk about "checks and balances" >.>;;;

Well, There are even some people regretting signing and apologizing to their family, friends and the rest of the world...

That doesn't change the fact she signed, though...

If I'm understanding this correctly, there's a possibility that we're all being watched by the Feds.

You do realize that article is a big lie right? It's from cnet. They're using the media to attempt to sway people to make kim guilty. In truth, I highly doubt he's really done anything wrong. It's the MPAA and the RIAA that wanted him locked away with a new feature that was supposed to come out.

Anything from cnet or it's other companies, don't believe their crap.

Sadly in america the police are allowed to search people without warrants, it may seem weird but there are some loop holes like in Terry v Ohio i believe, i could be mistaken but it applies to known felons police can search you without a warrant just for being a felon. Also though I have heard of people getting there homes search because of being on parole or with "probable cause" or "suspicion". And I learned that probable cause is a bitch, for example, Most probable cause sources can be placed into four categories. These categories are: this one being the loosest one. Observation – This is information that the officer obtains through their senses, such as sight, smell or hearing. This category is also used when an officer detects a familiar pattern of criminal activity that contains suspicious behaviors (i.e., flashing headlights, circling around a certain neighborhood.) But of course all this is aside the point because, MEGAUPLOAD ISN'T A PERSON! A HOME! OR IN THE MOTHERFUCKING U.S.A.
SOPA - SHIT OUT OF PEOPLES ASSES :mad:
Hope this clears thing up...

Congress itself does not sign treaties. The State department usually will sign the treaty, which then needs to be implemented by Congress like any other law. In reality, signing ACTA doesn't actually do anything to change the way the US enforces laws, or the laws themselves. It requires the Senate to approve the treaty via a 2/3rds vote, and has the then be ratified by the President. Most treaties signed are never passed; it's something like 1 out of 5 that make it past these steps after being signed.

It's this fundamental misunderstanding of the way the US government actually works that makes people elsewhere think "damn, those guys are ignorant!".

It just seems ridiculous to me that people in other countries have to suffer simply because the US government is upset about something. I'm an Australian and I feel like my rights are being abused by a country that I've got no connection whatsoever to.

ACTA was thought up by multiple countries, not just the U.S.
ALSO, if ACTA passes, and countries create laws to conform to ACTA, as far as I can tell, they're NOT allowed to contradict current laws. Would still rather have ACTA just die, though.

If that is the case, why are all the closed/closing websites always because of the US, it seems to send the wrong message to people

They're not closing "because of the US", they're closing because of the Mega Upload incident. If it were some other country in the EU that hosted the MU servers, believe me, it would have been pretty much the same situation. And I don't think they're shutting down for good ... This is more of a "hiding", just until they're sure it's safe enough to re-surface. I mean, who wants to be caught in the act now, after what happened to MU? They all hosted at least a small percentage of copyrighted material.

As long as people keep remembering we still have ways to oppose this monstrosity, then we have nothing to worry about.

Fileserve is now back in the game, we can use their public file hosting service again.

Didn't notice a link regarding this story from TechCrunch about VEVO and Sundance, but I thought a few members would enjoy a bit of the hypocracy.

I'd set it as a link, but I think the effect hits home harder when you can see the name of the article.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: SOPA, PIPA, MEGAUPLOAD, AND THE FUTURE OF THE FORUMS

Ladies and gentlemen,

There is a "new" threat that has arisen, I don't know the details in whether or not it's from the same guys that came up with SOPA/PIPA, but it's basically identical with their internet control. It's called the ""Trans Pacific Partnership", or TPP in short. This (TPP) has already existed for a very long time but the internet wasn't included. Here's what's new:

For those that really don't want to read the really long post, here's a few things you could be concerned about (Taken from the article above):

• Subject cyber security and data privacy to international control;

• Allow foreign phone companies to charge fees for "international" Internet traffic, perhaps even on a "per-click" basis for certain Web destinations, with the goal of generating revenue for state-owned phone companies and government treasuries;

• Impose unprecedented economic regulations such as mandates for rates, terms and conditions for currently unregulated traffic-swapping agreements known as "peering."

• Establish for the first time ITU dominion over important functions of multi-stakeholder Internet governance entities such as the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers, the nonprofit entity that coordinates the .com and .org Web addresses of the world;

• Subsume under intergovernmental control many functions of the Internet Engineering Task Force, the Internet Society and other multi-stakeholder groups that establish the engineering and technical standards that allow the Internet to work;

• Regulate international mobile roaming rates and practices.

So there you have it. If you didn't read the article but got interested after reading the points I copied, maybe you should give it a go anyway. It's basically a really good explanation of what this means.

I don't know what loopholes the TPP will have to go through, but as I read it, it's progressed quite far already in that "On Feb. 27, a diplomatic process will begin in Geneva that could result in a new treaty giving the United Nations unprecedented powers over the Internet."

I have no clue how long that process will take, but I assume they're in a hurry to make big cash and play big brother.

My apologies for the long post.

TL;DR: TPP is SOPA/PIPA/ACTA's (Even if EU isn't involved) big brother.
