I don't know why but japanese patreon - Enty - doesn't have such problems. Many people there are decent enough to not milk money out of people if there's nothing of value to publish. They also tend to publish on regular basis.
I never looked over their terms of service to see what the conditions are, but if I had to guess they probably have a clause or something that forces someone to actually put out an update to their product before collecting the money. At least that's what I would do. I tend to see enty devs giving two updates a month, so it gives me that feeling. Like if they couldn't make the second update, they at least had the first.

As of now, I think this forum should introduce a rule similar to 8chan - no patreon links. Maybe not so radical but devs should first prove that they are trustworthy when it comes to their determination to finish the game.
Careful. You're gonna summon the Great Patreon Creators of Massive Text Dumps [Legendary] to explain why you're wrong because they say so and no other good reason, then send PMs demanding you be banned.
No, but really. Some of the patreons here have been going for almost half a decade and some of those people work on multiple patreons. It's getting ridiculous to the point that I see regular folk unable to defend the practice anymore because it's just too obvious. A couple of these games haven't had a playable version released or updated in like a year, but they still demand insist that people shovel them money use their better judgement to approve of their product and donate some cash through an automated service that doesn't check if any new content was made.

Now I wonder even more - how come that EVERY h-game developer has problems of such magnitude? I just don't understand, it should be close to impossible for so many people to have such problems in such a small community unless such a community is a subject to some unknown "curse-like" factor. It would be a great alternative topic for my university research thesis, lol...
Ya the curse-like factor is laziness and no responsibility. Or maybe they really all do have crazy freak family issues and natural disasters going on 24/7. There seems to be a few that actually do get stuff done, like the previously mentioned Hreinn games, which is a miracle tbh. Then there is the really odd one out, Yummy Tiger. He is also always plagued by random BS, but doesn't collect any money, so maybe it's really true in his case. Regardless, too many patreon games are in never-ending development hell.

P.S. what's up with the edit feature. It's not updating properly, at least not on my screen.

I remember coming in this thread a long time ago and having HentaiWriter and numerous other people personally attack me because I called out the developer for a lack of progress, and hiding all progress updates behind a paywall, and not having any sex scenes added for 2 years. For some reason, people still want to give this guy money....

Well know that you were right in the end. Hopefully a few more people notice this and the usual apology crew doesn't try to sweep it under the rug.

I always thought that the Rapevine (a not!alraune that amputates people) was a gross idea ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As did I. It's super close to guro AND it's a prevalent enemy. If Chris really did leave because of enemies like Rapevine, then kReig should have toned it down. He was a stupendous artist/animator.

HentaiWriter defending the use of paywall? Big fuckin surprise considering the fact that he is the prime example of paywall updates... Seriously, if there wasn't a tread on this site for Future Fragments, I'd think he/she never got passed the lava level.

I hope whatever content IS done gets released to the patrons. Animations and whatnot. Otherwise it means they paid for literally nothing for two years.

took the thought straight from my brain and good luck trying to find a working demo for FF they make sure those links get nuked pretty quickly.

Oohh boy, I'm going to bed and I'll be counting seconds till the Cuck-brigade and the Great One arrive to enlighten us and help us redeem ourselves from this heretical line of thought. I'm not worried about being banned though. We don't do anything wrong and I don't think they are THAT much of an autistic bunch. Still, life is full of surprises and no one expects the Spanish Inquisition xD

Sounds like a TV channel that I actually would like to watch :D

Guys, you've got my full attention now. I only saw this public unfinished concept back in march 2016. It didn't really look like something worth fretting about when you get payed. Anyone willing to share some details on PM?

If that's gonna happen, I'll be laughing even harder than I did when Breeding Season went straight to the Limbo...on my personal scale, I'd rate Konami/10 ;)

We've posted our weekly updates publicly on multiple sites (including here) and Tumblr with no paywall for the past year, and we're about to do another public demo for FF in December, with monthly demos being put up as pirate links just about everywhere nowadays; I'd say we're pretty far from the prime example of paywall updates given that we give out just about everything for free besides demos, which eventually become public as well.

Honestly, it's not me doing it. I've posted pretty often saying I'll never DMCA a link and that there's nothing wrong with piracy, so feel free to post links to my stuff, even in my threads.

As far as the actual topic at hand, it's pretty much a shame, but there's not much I can say besides hoping he gets stuff together. He does live in a region in the world where natural disasters happen extremely frequently and overall quality of health is poor, so it's unlikely he's lying about anything.

That said, IMO he should have put out a demo months or even a year or so ago even if it was unfinished/buggy, as well as updated Patrons/publicly a lot more often, which are both things I advised him to do a lot, because when you don't do those things people start to think you're lying about stuff or not getting things done, and it's a lot harder for people to keep faith that things will be alright or that you'll make it out of problem situations like this.

Then why even have the Patreon paywall at all? It doesn't even make sense...
People get posts and demos early with the paywall. That's what the point of it is; premium for early content that everyone eventually gets, just like any other paywall.
That, and Patreon requires you to keep all NSFW posts behind Patreon only posts, regardless of if it's just NSFW language or art.

They also tend to publish on regular basis. Of course, there are some that gather the money for themselves but here's a funny little plot twist : they openly state that in the description! Sometimes I think we have a thing or two to learn from the Far-Eastern Asians when it comes to work and the general social values.
Because japanese actually try to finish their games and actually do so.
Obligatory hats off to every western dev, patreon or not who actually makes meaningful updates frequently, has good concept of what they want to make or finished their game, you guys are scarce among patreon milkers.

Ok, I recently checked the patreon and man, do I feel robbed now. The quality of the art and the whole idea behind the game is great. The mechanics that he planned to introduce seem rather interesting and now this whole drama is making me rather depressed for the wasted potential.

So, "why do you feel robbed?" you might ask. I checked every freakin' comment, post, upload and vote I could(only some voting posts where unavailable). I can't understand why he couldn't release some demos when he got the chance. Some things were done over a year ago and he still decided to hoard them for this "great release" that we're still waiting for and most likely won't even see(another great idea: something goes wrong? scrap everything and start again!). Fungus-guy would be a great start for a demo when he was done. At least art is a quality work, so that's a justification for the $6,15 scheme.

Also, there's something fishy going on with those reasons for quiting. When he announced that they've started working together, the whole concept of rapevine was already in place for a while and , I quote "Chris Armin is very interested to work FULL TIME for Divine Arms.". I can't believe that this guy was blind all that time. Also, as I said, I checked everything and the controversy around rapevine is blown out of proportion - some changes to animations(the hard part) and general change of lore and...drama's gone! Seems hard? Compared to the failed project, I think it's more than acceptable.

I was thinking about screenshooting the comment section for some fun but all I found was a cuck-festival that's almost cringe-worthy. Some people are seemingly upset but their voices are lost in the sea of cuckoldry. Recent posts are available on 4chan, if anyone's interested. To summarize: don't support the guy unless you want to see the art or act as a charity(this guy adopts every living thing he can find which is admirable but also foolish). Nothing of value is there at this moment.

Also, don't get me wrong, I still want to believe in this guy. It's just I can't get over the fact that such a dev is making so many terrible decisions when it comes to product management and marketing.

The biggest problem imo is that people keep throwing money at stalled and/or dead projects for way, way longer than makes sense. I mean, it took what, two years to release a single short, incomplete update? And people are STILL giving them money? Hell, apparently the latest post is saying the project is stalled, animator quit, no ETA for when work will pick up again, STOP GIVING US MONEY. And people are STILL giving them money? I obviously can't read the thread, but I'm seeing 70 comments to the post, and I'd bet anything that at least 2/3 of those comments are "we love you!" "take as much time as you need!" "please, keep taking my money and giving nothing back!".

Is anyone here still a backer, and if so, can I please ask why?

I must be missing out or confused or something. What's so dark about the rapevine? When I looked at the blog (which, granted, hasn't been updated in ages) all I saw of the rapevine was that it did a forced 69. Was there some patreon-only news that they decided to turn it into a guro monster or am I just being dumb?

I would copy the lore but I already dropped my pledge. I'll keep it short: the game looks candy-like but people forget that it's about fallen angel trying to get back and stuff. From the unseen enemies, we have fungus-monsters that are short-sighted and can be tricked by not moving. Now, the fun part is the two other monsters(technically three, as BH were planned in two options): rapevine and bloodhunter. Bloodhunters attack villages and have blood fetish. Of course, angel blood is a delicacy so they are really into us. Rapevine is an another funny concept - it's a plant that captures women and for the sake of convenience, cuts their limbs off. After that, the plant fuses itself with the victim and uses it to lure the others and to feed of the salt in tears, sweat and other body fluids. Men captured by the plant are sucked dry where they stand and left to die. Sounds gruesome, right? Wrong - it's just a lore, nothing really gore/vore like was presented and from what I suspect, nothing like that was planned at all. The only things close to these fetishes is semi-gore(he fucks MC in his mouth, that's all) planned for the reworked kuromaru(black orb enemy from the demo) and some signs of amputation on the rapevine's victim. That's all. Changing the lore would be like 5min of work and most people wouldn't even know the difference. We had a funny japanese game by BlueMadDiode about fallen angel Angelica in 2015 that was almost all about rape, gore, torture and amputation - this game is not even close to this level of horror.

I was waiting to get a few more details about this before i went ham, but i think i have enough now.

I made a thread the other day talking about the importance of having a site like Patreon where English speaking developers could make English-centric H games, clearly there is an interest in doing so and i still think that a platform such as Patreon is important because unlike Japan there isn't a massive culture around animated porn and it is very much a niche interest outside of that country, ideally people would be able to crowd fund projects them like without the platform itself getting in the way as Patreon has recently, With that being said, people who gain funding through Patreon need to fucking get it together.

The first demo for Divine Arms was put out nearly 2 years ago and since then, i haven't seen a single H-related update since, only promises to enhance the existing game system, expand the world, other massive and unnecessary undertakings. I believe that when deciding to make a project, it should have a limited scope, similar material to what we saw in the original demo would have been enough and after a few more similar scenes and a couple months of work and funding, it would have been enough to have a completed project under their belt.

Unfortunately, like alot of developers on Patreon, they want their game to be this big massive undertaking, the more promises they make, the easier it is to collect the continuous paycheck from patreon without ever actually delivering anything besides the occasional concept art or demo.

Ofcourse, this isn't the first time people have become skeptical of the development of Divine Arms, people were upset at the lack of new content for several months, enough that the developer eventually came on here and told everyone that he didn't care about the complaints here and he made content to serve his patrons, a shortsighted view as additional patrons cannot be attained without public support.

What makes me so upset is that this is yet another example of an overly ambitious dev who ultimately failed to complete his game, the excuse for his animator/artist quitting is horse shit, if there were any philosophical problems, they should have been solved with a simple conversation between the members of the small (2 man?) team, it should not resulted in the person quitting a 2 year project entirely. Whether this is truly the case or not, the project certainly looks like a scam.

In closing, i want to offer a warning to both potential patrons and devs who take advantage of Patreon (or similar services). As a Patron you have all the power here, you decide whether a project is worth your funding or not, as Patreon asks for funding every month, you should expect an update of substance every month as well, if at any point you feel as though the project isn't going in the direction you want it to, you should tell the dev and cancel your sub. To Developers: As mentioned previously, you have to keep the scope of your project in mind when developing it, i see projects like Divine Arms and Malise in the Machine either making a plan to expand the scope or the project to a much larger level or overhauling existing systems and basically redoing earlier sections of the game, if the original scope of the project changes, the likelihood that the project will fail increases tremendously, whereas if the developer simply kept making more of the same kinds of content in the original demo, the projects would have been much closer to completion.

Devs ofcourse are able to take the direction of the project in any way they want, but they do so at the risk of losing Patrons, current devs must shoulder the burden of utilizing the same platform which have failed to deliver time and time again with few exceptions (Sourjelly's Anthophobia being one of them), Patrons should question whether or not Patreon is a viable method of funding a English H-project, with each failed project, It is becoming increasing clear that the answer is no.
