Mysterious Frog Girl Bihl

"Heheh, well I wasn't serious," Bihl replied, before lapsing into silence. His explanation only seemed to perplex her, but she accepted it without further question, however, shrugging and letting the conversation drift into brief silence before the problem of someone coming down the hunting path stopped them again.

(Heh, Nesak probably wouldn't know what a human is either. There aren't any on Arlos yet. Woodcraft Check = 1 success. Stealth = 1 for Nesak and 5 for Bihl vs 5 for ??? and Perception = 3 for Nesak and 1 for Bihl vs 6 for ???)

"Uhhh.... Shit. That's true," Bihl replied, before shifting back into the woods. All that Nesak knew about scent tracking was to avoid being upwind of whatever you were trying to hide from, and with the use of that little tidbit he led Bihl a ways away. They were just barely close enough from their hiding place to see the figures of two humanoid beings that were much taller than Nesak or Bihl walking down the trail, carrying the carcass of some beast that Nesak didn't recognize between them. They were muttering to themselves in low, guttural voices, too low for Nesak to quite make out what they were saying, though what few words he did catch suggested that they were either griping about or abusing a female.

The pair passed without bothering Bihl or Nesak, leaving them behind, and once the sounds of movement and their voices had faded Bihl breathed a deep sigh of relief. "Whoo... That was close... So, what now?"

"Who are you!?" A voice demanded, emanating from somewhere in the nearby bushes, though Nesak couldn't tell which or even specifically from what direction. It was a female voice, one that spoke with commanding authority that threatened consequences if a satisfactory answer wasn't quickly forthcoming. Bihl jumped in surprise and knocked her head on a nearby tree branch, leaving her quickly sinking back down and rubbing the top of her head as she looked around in suspicion, giving Nesak the opportunity to speak first for the two of them.

"We'll ke-" Nesak was interrupted by the voice. So much for stealth. They had been found pretty quickly and whoever it was had the advantage. If Nesak or Bihil tried anything, they'd probably get an arrow in the throat so Nesak answered fast "We're travelers. My name is Nesak and this is Bihil. I'm on a pilgrimage and she is accompanying me as a traveling companion.. We were passing through and hoping to avoid any kind of confrontation. Neither of us wants a fight." He turned as he spoke, attempting to find the source of the voice. He at least wanted to know which direction to run away if the situation devolved.

"We're sorry if we have trespassed or anything like that but we were really just trying to get through." Nesak really wished he knew more about the wolfir at a time like this. Maybe if his father was a little more open to diplomacy, he could have known whether the wolf-people have a tendency to eat kobolds or londorians. He hoped not.

Mysterious Frog Girl Bihl

Wolfir Huntress Linde

"What is a kobold doing with one of the formori? Your kind are at war over who gets to live in that fetid swamp to the South, are they not?" The voice demanded, only growing more hostile while seeming to come from every direction at once. There was no telling where the speaker was, whether they were alone or supported, or whether they were near or far; they were clearly throwing their voice, and doing it well.

"You come through the territory of MY people, and yet you try to do so through secrecy... Poorly. It is no wonder that neither of your people could maintain territory in lands worth fighting for," the voice declared derisively, interrupting any effort to answer the former question. "But... You are unarmed. And neither of you look able to hunt as such. And you are on a pilgrimage you say... Such things are important, and sacred. Were it up to me, you could continue on your way," they continued in a much more even tone.

Then they stepped out into the open, and a wild woman of breathtaking statuesque beauty stood over Nesak and Bihl. She was certainly wolfir, but one of the more humanoid-looking ones as opposed to the sort with the head of the wolf. Her canine features were only in the ears and the tail, both of pale silver to match her long partially braided hair but with streaks of black. Her facial features were angular and well defined, like those of a noblewoman, and on her cheeks were a pair of markings; bands, the larger atop the smaller, either tattooed on or drawn in some sort of dark blue warpaint. Her skin was sunbronzed with a slight reddish hue, and her figure was more like something to be expected from a goddess; an hourglass shape with a full bust and wide hips, the trace hints of well defined abdominal muscles visible on her taut stomach, muscular legs and shoulders, and all of it was cover only in a short skirt and a chestpiece that barely contained her generous assets made from shaved elkskin.

Gazing down at them were golden eyes that practically glowed, pinpricks of crimson and jade visible just barely among the gleaming yellow. The woman's expression was a flat frown, suggesting that she would put up with no argument, and in her hand was clutched a spear with an obsidian head, the butt end currently stuck in the ground such that the sharpened black stone was pointed skyward. "Unfortunate for all of us that it is not up to me," she continued, "you are outsiders, and these are dangerous times... Strange times. The shaman has demanded that any unusual strangers be taken back to the village for her... Examination. The gods are at work, she says... So, you come with me. You will not be harmed, unless you bring ill upon my people." She paused, eyeing them coolly and waiting for an answer, and Bihl glanced towards Nesak blankly. She probably hadn't understood a word that the wolfir woman had said, leaving the kobold to respond in whatever manner he might like to the hunter's demands.

Nesak bristled when the wolfir insulted his tribe and the land they had bled for but held his tongue until the end. He had hoped that she would have been as misinformed on his people as he was on hers but that hope was misplaced. Argh. These foolish dogs. All Nesak wanted to do was complete his journey. Why must did her tribe's shaman have to become so paranoid? Unless... perhaps Sadim had rivals amongst the spirits and gods. Maybe the shaman was being advised by one that wished to stop him. If so, going with the warrior would be exceptionally dangerous. If her shaman spoke against him, he doubted he would be able to argue against any accusations.

On the other hand, he was even more doubtful that the warrior would be moved by any argument here. In addition, the female said she would have let him pass, given other circumstances. He did not wish to harm one who respected the spirits. Plus, there was the fact that even if Nesak acted, the warrior might well prove capable enough to defeat him. She was certainly a beauty but she acted as someone very sure of their abilities. First he translated to Bihl "She's not going to let us through. Her tribe's shaman has declared that all strangers be brought before her. She also says that we won't be harmed if we go peacefully. Hopefully this will be done quickly, then we can continue." He then spoke to the warrior "Very well. My name is Nesak and this is Bihl.. Such suspicions are without merit but we will go with you.." He had considered lying about his name in fears that they might know the names of his father's sons but he doubted her tribe had that much information.

Mysterious Frog Girl Bihl
Wolfir Huntress Linde of the Blue Woods tribe

"Ohhhh.... Uhhhh, alright. But, uhh, if we get eaten or something, I'm still blaming you!" Bihl replied nervously once Nesak had explained what the wolfir that had come upon them had spoken.

"Very well, Nesak and Bihl... I am Linde, of the Blue Woods tribe. That way," she replied, lifting her spear and pointing in the direction that they'd seen the hunters going before. "We will take the hunting path. You likely saw it earlier. And... Please, don't try running off. I would catch you," she continued, and so long as Nesak didn't cause any trouble she would simply prod them along in the right direction. She could move quite a bit faster than either of them, but remained in the back to guide them along, keeping both in sight. Bihl would sneak glances Nesak's way regularly, seeking any sign from him that they would be doing something about their apparent captivity, but if he did nothing then she would remain passive as well.

If he made no effort to break away, Nesak and Bihl would eventually arrive at a wolfir village. It was a different sort of settlement to what he might be used to; while not settled permanently, the wolfir tended to move from established camp to established camp, only making an exodus every few months. As such, the buildings in which they slept were larger huts made of wood, wicker and fronds rather than the collapsible tents that Nesak's people used to guard themselves from the elements. The wolfir were a physically inconsistent people, ranging wildly from looking humanoid to looking monstrous, and Linde's tribe was seemingly of a fairly balanced mix of the two. There were sentries, armored in wood and hide, at the edge of the camp. They glared briefly as the group passed, but their gazes lingered not on Nesak or Bihl but on Linde, who nonetheless bore the stares without any apparent reaction.

The other members of the tribe busied about, only sparing the odd trio the barest of glances, and even then only lingering for long if paths were crossed. "This way." They were led through the modest village, past a cooking pit where the kill they'd seen being carried earlier was now being prepared, towards the center. There, they were led not into the largest dwelling, but into the smallest, the only tent they'd seen. It was decorated in charms and fetishes that hung from the hexagonal dwelling, and strange symbols were drawn in blues and reds on the shaved elkskin. "In," Lindea prompted, and Bihl glanced again at Nesak before leading the way in. Short as the two of them were, even they had to crawl to get into the tent. Inside was a miasma of burnt herbs and incense that immediately assailed Nesak's nose, a low fire simmering in the center of the room over which a basin made of baked clay hung on a spit. The floor was covered in furs, unnecessary for warmth given the sweltering, almost suffocating warmth of the tent.

Across from the entrance was a wolfir woman, more human than wolf along the lines of Linde, clad only in a loin cloth and a headress made from the pelt of a great grey bear which hid the upper half of her face. Topless, the shaman's large breasts and stomach were bare, but also covered in lines in dyes akin to the ones staining the tent and in many of the same symbols. The woman's chin tilted up as Nesak and Bihl settled into seated positions across from her, and she shook slightly as if coming out of a stupor, but it wasn't until Linde had followed them in and sat cross legged as well, nose wrinkling with displeasure at the scent hanging in the air, that the woman elected to speak; "Strangers... Outsiders... Those of other blood... What is your purpose? Why do you journey through our lands?" The woman's voice was a low rasp, and the words were delivered slowly and carefully.

"Don't worry, I won't let us get eaten." Nesak understood Bihil's hesitance was understandable but hopefully this will be easy enough and mean that they won't have to dodge patrols the entire time they are traveling through the area. As they walked, Nesak activated his ability to gain information on Linde as he had on Bihil. He needed to know what he was dealing with. As they entered the settlement, he noticed the gazes on Linde. She must be awfully important to bring strangers in without being questioned. Or maybe strangers were just common enough that they had a system for dealing with them and Linde was their guard.

When they entered the tent, Nesak immediately wanted to step back out. What kind of person could spend time in here without running out of water quickly? The person who they had come to meet was the shaman Linde had mentioned. Nesak would have to be on his guard here. "I am on a pilgrimage. I received vision of a mountain that is far from here and I am seeking it. My traveling companion is Bihil. She is unusual amongst the invaders in that she is prefers peace to battle. We do not seek to harm any of your tribe, simply wishing to pass through unhindered." As he spoke, he activated his magic within his body to gain information on the shaman, as he had done earlier on Linde.

Using Analyze for 0 EP on first Linde, then the shaman.

Wolfir Huntress Linde of the Blue Woods tribe

Rolls
Willpower: 38 vs 47, failure.

Linde didn't seem to notice the kobold as he enacted his magic to further examine her. Again the spell didn't reveal much that he couldn't have seen with the naked eye; Linde was an exceptionally healthy and exceptionally fit example of her species, in the prime of her life. Like many of her kind, she seemed made to bear entire litters at a time and was fairly impressively ripe, though she lacked the indicators that she suffered from the heats that her bestial race were known for. There was an odd sense about her, as if there were some magic lying latent in her blood, but the exact nature of it eluded Nesak simply because he'd never seen it before and thus had nothing to compare it to. No signs of tapped spiritual talents like his own, or of mutation as had been seen among some of the more warped formori, could be found. The tattoos on her face seemed to be linked to the woman's latent power somehow and seemed to be some parts protective and some parts a bindings, though their exact origins and effects were unclear. Regardless, his magical analysis wouldn't reveal intentions or feelings, nor much else beyond what he'd already ascertained of her physical and spiritual makeup.

Trying the same trick in the shaman's tent would have distressingly different results, however. As Nesak called up the magic, his analysis hit a wall that his will could not penetrate. Rather, it seemed to become lost in it, drifting aimlessly no matter the urgency of his will. The fog wafting through the sweltering tent was rife with magic, herbal mixtures augmenting complex patterns of arcane energies that could only be the result of practiced sorcery. The barrier between the material world and the infinite realms of the daemonic was thin here, but deliberately so, and Nesak's brief attempts to analyze the barebreasted witch sitting before him were met by a view into infinite plains where ethereal game ran before a tide of spectral hunters, so many instances that he could never have counted them all but each seemingly playing out so intimately before him. Among the endless hunts were other scenes that played out in such intense intimacy that Nesak felt as if he weren't so much watching as he was actively participating; Brutal but passionate rutting between proven hunters, partners and friends of joking and singing together in the throaty howls of their people as they consumed their prey, shamans much like this one enacting their ancient rituals.

But... There was something else in the vision into which Nesak briefly found himself lost. The farther his consciousness expanded, the more pale the visions became. They lost substance, their voices growing more distant and feelings less intense in equal measure.

The derisive snort of the wolfir priestess awoke Nesak from the vision entirely, leaving him sitting beside a nervously fidgeting Bihl, across from the half naked shamaness, with the wolfir huntress that had dragged him here crouched behind him and emitting a slight growl of distaste.

"This is no place for those that hide within the guarded mind, faerie!" The woman declared, her gaze tilting upwards to settle upon Nesak, allowing him to see the silvery glow of her eyes through her ursine mask. "No place... No place... No! You do not seek a place... Truths and half truths... Visions... Yes... I can feel it about you, that is no lie. Though what... And from who... Not the Great Hunter to be sure... Not the Mother... The invaders? No, not the FIRE, not the EMPTINESS, and not DEATH... Another? The old ones? No no... But... Yes.... Yesss.... Yes, a spirit... A spirit of old... Trapped... Long held, but the walls crumble as they must... I have felt this, felt this one.... LINDE!"

The shout coming at the end of her rambling caused even Linde to jump slightly, and Bihl fell over only to quickly scramble a few feet aside, as if expecting the shamaness to leap to the attack or somesuch. She, of course, had understood none of what had been said except for Nesak's portion, and the shaman had mumbled with intermittent rises in her voice everything that she'd said.

"Mine... Mine own, gift of heaven and darkest curse... This is it... This is the moment you have waited for," the shaman said, but Linde seemed entirely lost. "What!?" She asked, perplexed, but the shamaness leaned back and sucked in a breath, her chest heaving in a manner that would normally have proved quite distracting. "The darkness and fire, driven by nothing... We have seen it. We have felt the edge of it, but only just... So far. They have plagued Arlos for centuries, but now... Their hunger is growing, and their own cursed lands are no longer enough. They are coming... We must prepare. Your father had seen it, that is why he enacted the summoning, why he inscribed upon you your destiny at the time of your birth, even though you were seemingly fit only to be given to the gods. Why you were born... This one is a sign, the one that I foretold! Yes... Together, you will lift three curses, save two lives, and sow the seeds that will bring an end - a final end! To the flames from the dark... You!"

The shamaness turned upon Nesak, and her voice adopted an extra note of gravity. "Linde is one of the fateborn, a hunter with a destiny decided upon by the gods... You say that you are on a pilgrimage? She shall join you, and find her destiny at your side. She will serve you well-" "What!?" "in your journey as your companion, an ally to you that we might make an ally with the one that you seek. Do you understand!?" There was an urgency to her comments, but even though Nesak could feel Linde's mutinous attitude playing out behind him, the hunter didn't speak up.

Nesak himself had been getting more nervous as the woman muttered to herself. And while he understood the words she was saying, he didn't quite understand what she was saying. Or understand it at all, really. He was barely able to keep up with her while at the same time receiving the knowledge about Linde's oddness. And that wasn't even mentioning the weird deflection he had felt when he had tried to use it on the shaman. The word "invaders" rang a bell and he had been trying to remember where he had heard it when the shaman suddenly addressed the warrior. When she shouted, it was all he could do to not launch himself at the floor and summon something big and strong to protect him. Maybe it was fortunate that putting together a golem took some concentration or he might have done that.

Then the shaman spoke... ehh... more words? Again, it was hard to keep track of what she was talking about. Apparently Linde was meant for... something. When he was presented with the question, it took him a few seconds to parse his thoughts. The female was going to join them? I mean, Bihl was fine... mostly. She was supposed to be an enemy but Nesak was probably as odd to her as she was to him. But Linde too? Despite the fact that Nesak was his tribe's chief's son, he hadn't really had any experience leading a group. Maybe this was part of the trial he would need to overcome? "An ally to you that we might make an ally with the one that you seek?" So they wanted to ally themselves with Sadim? That would be helpful, yes. Trying to gather his wits and ignore the anger that was coming from behind him, he nodded slowly "I would be willing to welcome aid, yes. I just don't wish to cause a problem with your people." He looked at Bihl "Bihl, the shaman has volunteered the services of Linde here. She said that Linde would find her destiny while she was with us. Would you have a problem with her joining us?"

Mysterious Frog Girl Bihl
Wolfir Huntress Linde of the Blue Woods tribe

Nesak's acceptance earned no shift from the wolfir shamaness before him, but Linde's anger boiled over in the form of a low but readily audible growl that felt like it rumbled the entire tent with the huntress so close behind him. Bihl edged a little bit away, and hesitantly replied; "Well uhhh.... I-if it's okay with her... Not sure that it is..."

"You can't POSSIBLY mean to really do this!" Linde declared, speaking over Nesak's head, and that seemed to break the shaman from her mystified stupor, as she straightened her back and glared back at the huntress from beneath her mask. A frightening weight suddenly filled the room, like they were truly in the presence of something vast and dangerous, and when she spoke it was in a voice that felt like a roar ringing through Nesak's ears even though she hadn't raised her volume far beyond her normal speaking voice; "You will DO as you are bid by the gods, Linde! This one is touched by the fates, the very same powers that brushed across you at the moment of your birth and kept you from being rendered fit as nothing more than a breeder gifted to the likes of Nagash! You will regard this one as your new chieftain for the duration of the quest you are to share, giving him ALL honors, and if you cannot handle that then we will have to discuss your usefulness here with Aruk!"

Whatever Nesak's reaction to the sudden change in the shaman's demeanor, it left Linde shrinking back and away. She remained silent for several moments, and then gave a feeble noise of acceptance before hastily clambering out of the tent. Silence reigned until Bihl, who had thrown herself to the ground, coughed and clambered back into a sitting position. "She will come to accept this after she grows accustomed to your size and oddness," the shaman declared in a return to her calm tone, albeit without the layer of incoherent mysticism that had veiled it earlier. "You may stay here for a time if you wish... I will answer questions as you need and as I am able, and there are... Troubles among the tribe that you might aid with if you wish for reward. Our chieftain, Aruk, will accept your presence and that of your formori companion, despite that she is an invader, when I have spoken with him."

And back to almost cowering. Jeez, both of these women were way too loud, though at least Linde was normal loud. The shaman had some kind of spooky, 'echoes from the void' kind of loud going on. If Nesak had to guess, he would have said that the shaman was probably similar to him in being directly connected to power rather than being a mage. And apparently so did Linde. That power he had sensed earlier probably had something to do with it. He bristled slightly at the "size and oddness" comment but it fit, a little at least. He wished to simply push on as soon as possible but it would be wise to prepare for the next step of his journey. He communicated what the two wolfir had shouted at each other to Bihil who probably felt more than a little lost. "Thank you for your hospitality. I'll be sure to see if I can repay your generosity. Although first I have some questions: Who is Nagash and why is Linde different from the others?"

The shaman tilted her chin downwards as Nesak questioned her, once more concealing her eyes, but when she answered it was closer to a normal person's speech than the mystifying tones she had affected earlier. "Nagash is a hunter among our people, one of the best. He is likely to be our next chieftain, as our current chief's only heir is both female and... Unsuitable. You do not understand our ways, outsider... But I will attempt to explain. Your people are naturally similar to you in appearance, yes? Rounded skulls, soft features, a lack of claws, simple forward bending knees? This is not the case for our people. In ancient times, we took this land from other tribes, another race of people that are long since extinct by our conquest. They were like you, but taller and without the magics inherent to your kind. We fought for these lands... And it was our people who won. Naturally, we claimed some as captives, and as is the right of a conqueror and their captors, some of us enjoyed them. Their lineage stains our people to this day, making us.... Like this. I am more wolf than Linde, but only barely, and it is rare even for one of my ability to reach this position given my... Unfortunate features.

"You see, the form our people are meant to hold... Is that of the wolf. The consummate hunter, as is the form of our greatest god. He is the all-father, the conqueror, the provider... With tooth and claw we are strong, able to fell the greatest of beasts and become masters of all lands. Lacking these things, we must craft the feeble weapons of our ancient enemies, in replacement for what the weakness they have left in our lineage has caused some of us to lack. I lack these things... And so does Linde. No matter how hard she strives, the nature of her appearances has made her unsuitable to any position of note save mine, which she has refused to seek. If she remains here much longer... She will be claimed as a concubine by a male hunter, likely Nagash given his enjoyment of... No, it is not for me to say. I suppose that, as she is now bonded to you, she might suffer such a fate at your hands instead. Honor binds her to obey. But I would advise against making that any sort of opening strategy; Linde is fragile of ego and already deeply troubled.
"

There were some notes of sympathetic hope in the shaman's voice just before she fell silent, leaving Nesak to do with her explanation what he would. The woman had, as yet, not elected to command him to leave, offering the opportunity to continue asking questions if he so wished. Bihl, in the meantime, would glance from her to Nesak and mutter; "That was a lotta words... I don't even know if I want to know...."

So this Nagash... Nesak had to be careful. He was probably going to start on his bad side thanks to Linde being bonded to him. Which was... interesting. Maybe instead of the wolfir being enemies, Linde joining him was like Bihil's joining him. Maybe it was all Sadim's doing? What if he had to lead his tribe to perform what the wolfir had done but perhaps reversed? After all, it wasn't like his tribe had anything to lose. Although maybe they could be punished if they sought aid from demons, though he couldn't imagine they'd last long if they were weakened.

"I'll keep that all in mind." He turned to Bihil "So... the woman who ambushed us is going to be travelling with us as well. The shaman told me that I should help out around the village so I'm going to do that now. Once everything is set up, we'll continue on our way." If Bihl doesn't stop him, not that he expects her to, he'll proceed to explore the wolfir village, searching for sideq- I mean ways to aid the wolf-people! He's also on the lookout for Linde since he hopes to have some kind of basis on which to build a relationship since they will be traveling together.

"Uhhhh.... Right. Was that what she was so mad about?" Bihl asked, scratching her head. "Well, alright... Maybe we can nab some supplies out of the deal? Yeah.... I'll help! A-assuming that the wolf people don't mind anyway," she declared, standing and stretching. The shaman would toss Nesak a token as he made to leave, a leather thong on which hung a grey feather and a claw, and in parting said; "This will ensure that you are not too badly accosted if Linde proves difficult. It is my personal symbol."

With that, Nesak and Bihl would be free to leave the shaman's sweltering tent. The air outside was clear and blessedly cool, and Bihl gave a sigh before clutching at herself, shivering slightly from the sudden temperature change. Linde was waiting outside, standing beside the tent entrance with a scowl on her face and her arms crossed over her chest. She didn't look to Nesak or Bihl for a second or so after they left the tent, standing straight backed and grinding her teeth while she stared off into the sky. Eventually, however, she would glance disdainfully towards the shivering Bihl for a moment, and then let her gaze settle onto Nesak.

"Alright, look... I don't like this. I don't know if you like this either. But I've got my orders from my shaman, and I'll be damned if I shame myself or my tribe by disobeying that," she began coolly, though there were still hints of her frustration even in her dispassionate tone, "so, I'll help you in... Whatever your quest is, until we see it done or one of our lives are spent. So... That's that then." She huffed visibly, but after letting her breath out through her nose Linde let some of her stiffness go. "So... Before either of you do anything stupid, how much do you know about my people?" She asked, glancing from Nesak to Bihl and back. The formori girl only stared back blankly, and the wolfir sighed again and asked; "She... Can't actually understand me, can she? Does she even know what's going on?"

Nesak responded to Bihil while they left the tent "That's the plan. Any equipment would be helpful as well." He tied the thong around his neck to make sure he wouldn't lose it. He was going to continue when he noticed Linde. After she finished her speech, Nesak wiggled his hand "No she can't but I've given her the summary. But yeah, that's probably going to be a problem. And in answer to your other question, very little. She," At this, Nesak gestured at the tent ",told us a little about your, umm... problem. I also asked about Nagash and she told me a little about him as well." He looked at the shivering Bihl "Before we talk, could we go inside one of these tents? Or maybe you've got a coat somewhere that could fit her?" Nesak hadn't been affected as badly by the temperature change. He had on more garments, including some padding under his armor. It had made the heat pretty distracting but he wasn't shivering like Bihl was.

"We'll figure out communication between each other later... For now, you can speak for her. It would be better for you two to stay near each other while in my village anyway."

Linde frowned at the mention of Nagash, a slight snarl marring her features. It faded back into a thin lipped frown as Nesak asked that they continue their conversation in a tent or somesuch, however, and she gestured with her head and said; "Sure, we can take mine. This way." Bihl would follow, even if she also muttered; "Ehhh, it's alright, I'm alright... Just taking me a minute to adjust." The formori did seem to be getting more comfortable even as they walked, but Linde took them to her tent anyway. Hers was a smaller and simpler affair than the shaman's, a relatively unadorned elkskin canvas, and the wolfir woman dropped to hands and knees - offering Nesak an even more enticing view than usual, though she wasn't going commando - and crawled in. Her tent was likewise more cramped with all three of them in it, but as they settled in Bihl seemed to warm up quickly.

"Well.... I suppose I should start with what you should NOT do, if you wish to make yourself of use to my people. Firstly, do not approach m-the chieftain," Linde began, "his sole task is the guidance of the whole of the tribe, his dealings are of no concern to you. It would be better to approach our women than our men; most of the males in my tribe are hunters, and their pride will make dealing with them difficult even if they ARE in need. Especially because you are both an outsider, and very small. I am not sure where your talents lie, but raw materials are rarely what we lack. Our craftsmen are lacking after our best died last month, and what tools we have are running low."

"Alright... As for myself, I've learned the basics of herbalism and mixing of ingredients. In fact, I was hoping that you might have some extra ingredients here I could use with what I have to finish a healing potion. Mostly, though, my tribe made sure I could be counted on to perform the same duties as everyone else: hunt, track, spot signs of enemies, make my way through the treacherous lands that were our home. But where most of my tribe was strong in body, I am strong in spiritual power, much like your shaman, though she appears to be more skilled than I am. Let me let Bihil know what's going on." Nesak quickly translated what Linde had said for Bihil. He also asked Bihil "Bihil, do you have any skills other than those I've seen? For example, do you have any craft abilities? And do you think you'll need anything from here before we leave?" He also spoke to Linde "Linde, before we leave, I have some questions for you: what kinds of skills do you have and should we expect any problems when we attempt to leave the camp?"

Mysterious Frog Girl Bihl
Wolfir Huntress Linde of the Blue Woods tribe

Linde listened impassively while Nesak listed off his skills, her expression thoughtful as she listened and then Nesak translated for Bihl. "This is so weird... I understand everything you say, even when you're talking to her, but then I've got no idea what she's saying! Uhh.... Well, my old tribe thought I was pretty sneaky. I used to scout and stuff, before I... Left. Aaanyway, I'm not really much of a shaper, never had the talent or the attention span. I'm a good climber and swimmer though! Not, uhhh, sure how those might help, buuut... Yeah. I don't think I'll need anything special, but we should try to get some rope. Never know how you'll need it, but you always end up needing rope on an adventure, right?"

"What did she say?" Linde asked after Nesak had his brief interlude with Bihl, and if Nesak answered as Bihl had explained she would give a thoughtful hum. "Well... We can always use more medicine, and our shaman isn't the only one who works with herbs. If you could find things we can't, perhaps we could prevent another bout of plague. We should go talk to the herbalists, Ezma and Shaiir. Perhaps they'll have the ingredients you need to finish your own work as well, if anyone does it would be them."

With that Linde would shift from her sitting position back to hands and knees, and would crawl back out of the tent ahead of them. Bihl would notion for Nesak to go first, snickering slightly, and from there they could follow the huntress through another portion of the village. The wolfir's makeshift settlement wasn't exactly large, but it did sprawl, and the place that Linde led them to was located a short ways outside of its line. The smell wafting from the tents that they ultimately approached was... Disconcerting, to say the least. A mix of sharp, musky herbal scents, suppressed decay, and various forms of salty preservatives greeted them as they drew near, but as they emerged from the treeline another pair of masked wolfir girls came into view behind a wicker table they had set up to work on. Both had long, dark hair drawn up into buns on the back of their head, similarly ruddy-tanned skin to what he might have come to expect from the human-looking wolfir by now, and wore long skirts and thick leather gloves. The pair were differentiated by height - one was a few inches shorter than the other - the color of their eyes - the taller had gold eyes and the shorter had red ones - and the designs on their vests; the shorter one had a sun woven onto their chest, its rays spreading especially downwards towards the bottom of her outfit, while the other's vest had no design on it.

The taller of the two also sported a rosy color to her cheeks and a distracted look in her eyes, however, and when she looked over Nesak and his group her eyes settled on him immediately and dilated heavily. She entered a coughing fit, and the shorter one with the sun-pattern on her dress muttered something to her and shooed her towards the tent. She hastily crawled inside and drew the flap closed, and once she was gone the shorter one let out a sigh and pulled off her protective mask, setting it down on the table as she moved around it to meet Nesak and company. Her eyes remained on Nesak for a few seconds, and then again on Bihl, before she eyed Linde. "Hello Linde.... I didn't expect a visit from you today. What merits the occassion?"

"Hello Ezma," Linde replied neutrally, "What's wrong with Shaiir? The, uhh, usual?" The other wolfir glanced back at the tent, ears twitching as her tail gave a little swish, and she sighed before replying; "YYyyup. It's getting to the point where I almost WISH someone would, ahhh, take care of it. We don't have the materials for the regular treatment." She glanced back at Linde, who smiled slightly, and offered; "Well... I might have someone who could offer you a solution to that little issue." She glanced knowingly at Nesak, and Ezma turned her gaze to the wayward kobold and cocked a curious eyebrow. "Oh? How's that?"

Nesak would finish up with Bihil before they left "Alright, well, that's fine. I'm not that great at that stuff myself so if we run into a situation that calls for it, I'll be leave it to you. And yeah, rope is generally pretty useful." For some reason, the name 'Samwise' popped into his head. He had no idea why. He had hoped she might elaborate on why and how Bihil had left but apparently that time was not now. No problems. He would share this information with Linde, no reason not to.

Nesak flushed slightly at the sight of the taller of the two herbalist being obviously in heat. Usually it was just animals but apparently Shaiir was close enough to their beast nature to go through the same cycle. He wondered if Linde would go through a similar process. Probably not, given that she was much more human-like.

Before they continued to talk, Nesak spoke up "Just letting you know that, yes, I can understand you. My name is Nesak, I am a kobold from the Goldblood Tribe. I was hoping to get some help finishing a healing potion I started, I was missing some ingredients." He pulled out the ingredients he had found. The flush returned, bit by bit, as he continued to talk "If you wish me to pay for the rest by services rendered, that would be fine. I have no objections. I think I can finish actually making the potion myself."

"Uhhh.... Oh, s-sorry... I didn't mean any offense," the herbalist replied when Nesak momentarily interrupted, "I didn't realize you could... Oh, a... Kobold? Aren't... You a creature of faerie?" However Nesak might respond to that slightly awed tone, when the subject turned to business she would nod and beckon him closer. "Ahhh, lets see.... Hm, yeah, I think we have what you might need... I sort of know this recipe!"

Linde was frowning slightly, but as Nesak went over to the herbalist she would pull Bihl aside and the two would take a seat nearby, waiting for Nesak to finish his dealings. "Here, aah, here! This should do... But uhh, as for payment...." She trailed off after producing some herbs onto a nearby table, after which she pulled down her mask. She leaned more towards the human than the animal, like Linde, but still sported a bit more of the wolf than Nesak's companion. Linde's only canine features were her ears, tail and golden eyes, but the herbalist sported more pronounced canines and patches of fur in a few places; still mostly humanoid, but certainly more wolf than the tattooed huntress.

Ezma glanced briefly at Linde, frowning herself, and then back at Nesak. "Our teacher died... Shaiir is my sister, you see, and our mother... We were supposed to be the next keepers of knowledge, medicine women, but our training wasn't finished when the plague took her. We've been making do, but... Our records are woefully incomplete. Mother used to mix something to control the heat, and I... Vaguely know how to make it. But I've never tried. There's uhhh... Another recipe, a much older one that's supposedly a lot more effective, but it calls for... Essence. Of a male faerie. They were... Described differently, but I don't imagine I can be too picky... D'you get what I mean?" She was blushing slightly by that point and couldn't quite meet his eyes.

"If you can get me the ingredients that I need, the herbs for the regular mix are down by the lakeside. I'd trade you what you need for your healing draught for them, I'd do it myself but I can't really leave Shaiir like this... But uhh... If you could maybe help us fix up some of our records, maybe fill in some of our missing knowledge since you seem to know what you're doing, we'd definitely owe you more than just some spare herbs, and... Uhm... Well, Shaiir's currently in a mood to be thankful. Very. Thankful. Ahem.... So uhh, what kind of deal are you looking to make? I'll uhh, understand if you just go for the potion... Not sure if I might prefer it, to be honest," Ezma finally trailed off, having been regularly glancing from Nesak - whom she could only barely look in the eyes - and Linde who was watching them suspiciously while she spoke in low enough tones that she and Bihl probably couldn't hear them.

Oh, okay, so some of the wolfir did feel like treating kobolds with some respect? Eh, possibly it had to do with hunters and civilians. Besides, it seemed like the girl had enough on her plate, what with her training being incomplete. For Sadim's sake she only "sort of" knew a basic healing potion's recipe? This tribe was in for some rough times ahead. Unless, of course, Nesak aided them.

On one hand, a stronger Wolfir presence would make it more difficult to move his tribe out of the swamp when the time came if they remained noncompliant. He still hadn't met the leader so it might not actually be too bad but somehow he felt that it world just wouldn't be that kind to him. Still, if he could make some key allies, he might be able to bypass the need to win over the leader.

As for the reward, though... ehh... he didn't need a half-blood child of his coming around years later upsetting all kinds of planning. After all, technically it'd be his first born. Of a secondary concern was that Nesak was... unsure how Linde and Bihl might react to such an action from him. He wasn't about to cause all kinds of problems just because he wanted to get one off. Even if the encounter with the nature spirit had left him a little frustrated. The shaman had said that Linde would eventually deal with that, after all. Nesak shook his head "I don't need such a... reward. If you provide me with the rest of the herbs I need to complete the healing potion, I'll show you how to create a tonic to treat the heat you enter into. I can also show you how to make some other vital potions if you are willing to give me the materials to let me make them."
