It was war.
The Sky Dimension played host to the final battle. Beneath an empty, azure blue sky, the two armies charged, smashing into each other with an ear-shattering roar. On one side fought the Hellish Legions; beasts, demons, spirits of flame, tentacled monstrosities. Behind their armored ranks blazed the flames of their home dimension, licking at the sky.
Against them stood the Disciples of the Light; an army composed largely of Angelic Warriors and their Overlords, though amongst them thronged sorcerers, demi-gods, Pure Crystal Collosi, a whole assortment of inhuman golden soldiers.
The battle raged furiously, neither side conceding an inch. Projectiles filled the air, whizzing and humming overhead, before landing with colossal explosions, flinging warriors of both armies into the air. The screams of the wounded, the roars of the Giants, generals bellowing their orders; it was a maelstrom of chaos and confusion, played out on an plain, white-cloud battlefield, now slick with blood, slime and essence stains.
You are one combatant in this battle. You are the Tentacle Supreme. A huge, shambling monstrosity, with a black, almost spherical body, from which a huge assortment of tentacles (of all thicknesses and styles) protrude, waving around wildly. No-one is quite sure of your true allegiance, but one thing's for sure - nothing and no-one stands before you for long.
On the left you spot your old friend, the Void King, firing his bolts of antimatter into the ranks of the Disciples - yet still they press on, swords and spears slicing through the air, simultaneously cutting down those before them and being massacred themselves.
There's no end in sight; the numbers in both armies are huge beyond imaging. As far as the eye can see, left or right, the front line of warriors fight each other, yet behind them their cohorts stretch endlessly back into the distance.
You glide forwards on a layer of specialized mobility tentacles, and gargle a spell - all your tentacles snap out, erect, and a sphere of magic extends from your body, crushing all lifeforms in a 10 metre radius. That should scare the rest of them.
But what's this? A single jelly eye emerges from the front of your spherical body, and lowers its gaze. Lying battered and bruised on the ground in front of you is an Angel. A female Angel... or is it a Succubus? You're so ancient, it's hard to tell. Anyway, she's lying there helplessly. Something inside you starts to stir...
----
Option A) Take the Angel/Succubus by force, consuming her sexual energies with your tentacles, and adding her power to your own.
Option B) Completely disregard the female and press forward to claim other victims.
Option C) Heal the fallen warrior, for even beings such as yourself are capable of mercy. There has been too much blood shed already.
----
Too late. Whilst you are distracted by the prone body lying before you, you fail to spot one of the other soldiers raising there weapon. Too late, you look up - and a Sapphire Lamia has already thrown her Golden Spear at you. It passes through your protective layer of magic without even pausing - clearly it's enchanted - and then passes straight through your thick, oily flesh without much of a problem. You bellow in furious agony, and still the Golden Spear passes through you - right until it pierces your beating magical core. Shit.
The cloud opens up beneath you, and you fall, tentacles and bits of flesh flying away from you, your body tearing itself apart, magical energy dissipating... fading... so nearly gone.
Darkness.
When you awake, your spirit shuffles and coils uncomfortably. Location... well, the mortal realms, obviously. What appears to be a dank, moldy, and not particularly original dungeon cell. There's a solid looking wooden door standing up before you; it seems intimidating, now you've been shrunk to something not much larger than a particularly big earthworm.
God, the indignity of it. Someone as proud, as resplendent, as noble as you, to be struck down by a lucky blow from some ignorant Lamia... it makes the blood boil. Or the tentacles writhe, if you had any left.
Argh! The voices! They're back! That's the problem with embodying multitudes. With considerable concern, you note that you can hear a cacophony of raised, shrill voices inside your own consciousness. Great. They'll be fun to deal with.
Uh. Mustn't get distracted. The plan is thus: get out of here. Grow in power, to a level exceeding even our former glory. Get revenge.
Please choose a host to inhabit. Four tentacles, the remains of your once great body, lie decaying on the stone floor in front of you. You'll only have time to inhabit one before the rest decay into dust!
Option A) The Green Tentacle. One of the strongest breeders of any tentacle species, they can lay innumerable eggs almost anywhere, though they develop best inside a host. They are also one of the most mobile and physically strong, and are excellent swimmers.
However, they aren't exactly subtle, and are almost completely useless with any kind of magic.
Option B) The Black Tentacle. Thin and almost noodly, these tentacles specialize in stealth; they are adept at creeping along unseen in the shadow, then taking over a host, releasing corruption inside their bodies.
However, their weak body structure makes them vulnerable if they are exposed.
Option C) The Purple Tentacle. The most adept at magic, these can master spells with greater ease than any other tentacle species. Cunning and understanding other's intentions are also a forte of theirs, in addition to being strong breeders (though not quite up to the standard of the Greens).
They are still fairly feeble, however, strong physically than only the Black variety.
Option D) The Blue Tentacle. Something of a jack-of-all-trades, master of none; they are average breeders, moderately strong, and OK at using magic. On the other hand, they ARE exceptionally cunning, good at tricking others to do their bidding with clever pacts and deals, and are well known for building collosal, intricate lairs and employing hordes of ferocious servants.
Now, what is the first step towards getting out of here?
1) Footsteps race past in the hallway outside. Slide up the door, out through the gaps between the bars, and have a look at what's going on.
2) There is a crack in the stone wall of the cell. Faint magical energy can be smelled on the other side... that might be worth investigating.
3) A pool of water sits in the floor, at the side of the cell. There's no telling how deep it could be. Take a dip and see what's down there.
As you may have gathered, this is my new CYOA. Totally different to the last one, but with more than a whiff of TL: Evolution about it (which has to be one of my all-time favourite CYOAs. Hopefully I can come within a million miles of its quality).
There are some new mechanics. There's a moral choice system (oh yes!). This will affect how various NPCs in the game interact with you. Some will only help you if you're good, if you're evil, and some just don't give a damn.
There'll often be a Neutral option as well, and unlike in most moral choice games, it'll actually have its own advantages. Some items and some NPCs only react to true Neutral entities.
I'll say it now; more of the NPCs in the game are willing to help Good aligned characters. Yet the evil options are often more fun, and easier... so therein lies the element of choice.
You can start with your chosen alignment by picking from the red, blue, and purple option I offered during the intro sequence, but it isn't necessary.
The system works on a scale, 1-100, with 1 being totally pure, 50 totally impartial, and 100 being vilely corrupt. 1-35 is Good, 36-65 is Neutral, 66-100 is Evil. Your current alignment will be displayed is 50, and you can keep track of it in the status box that'll appear in each update.
Some NPCs I will unashamedly steal from works in popular culture - because I'm amazingly badass and have no fear of copyright - so if you recognize them, that might tip you off about their true intentions. Not everything is what it seems.
This dungeon isn't too big. Once you break out of it, you'll encounter the Dimensional Nexus; from here there will be portals to a variety of different themed worlds. More of them will activate as the CYOA progresses.
So, long ramble over... play nicely, and have fun!
EDIT: Death will lead to your spirit escaping, and having to respawn. Until you find a respawn point later in the dungeon, that means respawning in this cell. It isn't too much of a setback, you get to keep your current form (baring some really exceptional circumstances).
In addition, most enemies have their own powers; defeating them generally means imbuing them into yourself. Accumulate enough Souls (christ apparently I stopped being subtle at all at this point) and you can use them for all kinds of things; upgrades, currency to barter with, energy for particularly death-defying activites... and whatever else may crop up.
No, you won't have to travel back to your 'bloodstain' to regain souls when you die, I'm not ripping it off THAT utterly.
