Sable was a long ways from home, and the night was cold. She wrapped her cloak tighter around her, marching down the stony road alone, her rifle slung over her shoulder. She had followed the rumors to this dark road, leading into Artmirst, where she might be lucky enough to find her Master. She had heard that it might be dangerous, but in her travels with her master she had quickly learned to defend herself, and her Master had even come to rely on her magics from time to time.

She was only an hour away, traveling down the road from the South, when she reached the mines near the town. The wind howled, and she knew that soon she might be in her Masters arms once more. There were several buildings nearby, along with the mines themselves, great mouths opening into the ground.

Sable huffed softly as she closed her eyes once more, trying to remember the chant for warmth. It was always such a bother, she had little scraps of paper she often used back home, but this dreaded night and her hopes to be done with this journey were beginning to drag on her mind.

"Warmth... heat... mmf... why didn't I study fire magic as well as my other elements..." Sable whispered to herself as she walked.

Holding her cloak more tightly about her body, Sable crouched low to the ground, a mixed instinct, for stealthy movement and fast travel, and to hope to cut under the biting cold of the night winds, a shiver coming down her spine as she made for the buildings.

'Probably abandoned. This place has seen better days. But abandoned by man often means infested by beast... best to handle this quickly and quietly.' she thought to herself, rushing at the cluster of buildings and her ears perked up when she was finally away from the howling gusts, already mentally reciting the words for some of her attack magics as she began a systematic sweep of the buildings, hoping the mining camp wouldn't be too large and she could bunker down in whichever building was still in the best condition.

Perception: Success.

The area seemed largely quiet, and Sables sweep of the small cluster of buildings revealed that all of them were empty. One of them, the largest, seemed to be an office, with a bunch of desks and papers. The smallest was a latrine, and the other two seemed to have been store houses. None of them seemed to have been abandoned for long, and were all still in good condition.

Sable nodded slowly as she finished her brisk sweep of the area, "This'll do for the night, at least." She looked over the area, checking how much further it would be until she was at the main part of the town, mostly for keeping mental notes, before she headed into the office building, gun drawn just in case.

'This paperwork could be useful... if I can find anything from the last day before they stopped working, or maybe a reference to the rift even. Maps, charts, they could even have a secret storage nearby that was overlooked when they left. You never know what valuables people leave behind when they think the world is about to end, after all.'

Sable set about making a thorough check of the building, first a glance through the room, gun trained on anything suspicious inside, then moving in, paying special attention to any paperwork that looked like it was still intact under paperweights or neatly stacked, hoping something would have dates or information on materials stored.

Sable finds the room empty, and after glancing over the paperwork finds that all of it is ledgers and such, along with a diagram of the mines themselves. The map is rough, but she is able to read it well enough.

(Anything else? Dates? Rest of the building empty? At least two exits? If so...)

Sable grinned at the mine map. She didn't really intend to go there, but all the same, knowing more about the area was always useful. She looked outside, at the cold weather and the wind... this was not a night she wanted to return to.

She needed a place that was safe and warm, and this building was as good as any she could hope for, quietly slinking through it once more, this time she sought more common things. Bits of string, metallic objects, double checking any possible entrances, or exits, and hoping she could find a little something to eat left behind by one of the people who fled.

Traps were not her specialty, but small alarm on the door, and any other ways in, would go a long way towards her peace of mind. It would barely take a few moments work to rig a little something here and there so she would hear if anyone was coming into her chosen resting space.

(OK, you must have played D&D or some other rpg before, because you ask all the right questions.)

The rest of the building proved empty, and both exits were closed behind her, unless something came in through one of the windows. She didn't find anything to eat, but the last date she found on any of the ledgers matched up with the date that the rumors held that the portal had opened. She did have food with her, however, and she managed to rig up both doors so that they'd make noise if they were opened before finding a comfortable place to sit.

(Survival Horrorist Nut. Me and my friends are the kind who watch a zombie movie and think of ways to out-do the people there. Though I have run RPs before and been in a few, so I have ideas of how my character would react and prepare for certain encounters.)

Sable smiled as she finished her rigging, and went to the windows, blocking off most of them while keeping one last window as her backdoor, rigging it with an alarm as well.

Her task completed, she gathered any stray cushions or clothes that were left in the building while undoing her armor, heaving a long, relaxed sigh as the hard leather came off of her slender body. "Mmmh.." A few drops of water splashed over her eyes after the long windy journey and stroked through her hair to smooth it back before she tied it up again, Sable tucked her armor and gear beneath one of the desks near the back of the room, sure not to take the most obvious hiding place in the far corner or right against a wall, just in case someone did get the drop on her.

Then quietly she sat down in the most comfortable chair she found, kicking her feet up on one of the desks and purring softly to herself as she ate. Just being out of the wind felt so much warmer, and finally having her armor off was bliss to the Su-Ku-Ta girl.

Her gun still right on hand in case of trouble, but the fear of this place had subsided greatly by now. An evening meal and a good night's sleep were all that were on the woman's mind until tomorrow. She ate light, both to preserve her food supplies and keep herself alert, but enough that she would not be left hungry, then took her bundled up soft stuffs and slipped beneath one of the desks, curled up like a kitten with her arms lovingly wrapped around her gun, and letting herself fall into a light slumber.

(Only other thing I can think to ask is how much "basic" gear do we have, or if we actually had to list anything of it?)

(I didn't want to bother with basic gear, so I assumed everyone had food and water enough to get by. Ammo is listed in your equipment, but I don't think anyone's ever going to have a major problem with it. And that's exactly what I do with my friends after watching a zombie movie. )

Sable sleeps peacefully and comfortable through the night, and is not disturbed by anything. She awakens in the early morning, a little while after the sun comes up, to a scratching sound at one of the doors.

Sable yawned awake and rubbed down her sides, crawling out from under the desk and smiling as she donned her cloak again. Barely wearing anything that could be considered clothes as she slept, she pulled her cloak around herself to retain modesty while hefting her gun and moving to a window to see if she could find out what was outside the door before daring to open it.

Sable sighed softly. She looked the dog over and took a guess that the thing was probably not hostile since it was scratching at the door.

She waited just a moment, watching the canine closer as she idly thought about letting it in, then glanced about the area outside to be sure it wasn't a decoy, musing to herself, 'oh why not...'

When she was sure that everything seemed safe (and only if she finds everything seems safe), she quietly rushed to the door and pulled her noise trap down to let the door swing gently open without any startling sounds for the poor dog, "Hey boy. I'm sorry but there's not a lot of people here right now. I hope you don't mind if I'm the only friendly face."

After a few moments watching the area, Sable decides that it is safe to let the poor creature in, and opens the door. The beast happily paws in and sits in front of her, offering her its paw to shake. She can see several wounds on the poor animal, all of them looking like claw or teeth marks.

Sable whinces at the sight of the injured thing, taking its paw in a polite gesture and shaking it a few times before quickly welcoming the creature inside, "You poor thing... let me see what I can do for some of those injuries... and maybe a bit to eat?"

She encourages the canine to come inside so she can quickly reset her trap, and tries to get him to follow her over by her gear so she can give him something comfortable to lay on and a bit of food. "Now if you'll just stay still for a few moments, I bet we can make you good as new." She adds between petting the poor animal, as she begins to softly recite her minor restoration magic, in between reassuring whispers as she hugged and cuddled the injured dog. "Who's a good boy... that's right... you're a good boy..."

(Casting Minor Restoration (Nature), heals 7hp per round, no fail chance, drain 1 ep per round. Holding the spell until he's fully healed or something interrupts them.)

(The 1 cost per turn is only for the buffs, the healing spells are just constants.)

The dog seems quite comfortable with her presence, and Sable watches as her spells mend his wounds. His tongue lolls out as she cuddles with him, and he gives an approving 'woof.'

Once his wounds heal, Sable is better able to examine him, firstly finding out that he is, in fact, a she, and secondly finding that the dog seemed to be in good health despite her wounds.

Sable blinked a few times, blushing as she promptly corrected herself, "Ah, Good GIRL that is." She stroked the dog's fur a bit more and handed off another small scrap of food, then stood up and stretched, grabbing up her gun again but not ready to collect the rest of her gear just yet.

Walking to the door she quietly took the trap down again and opened the door, peering outside and taking a rather direct path. She had need for the outhouse. A brisk morning trot, her skimpy outfit bouncing around, she undid her cloak and hung it up on the side of the outhouse before opening the door and slipping inside, gun still with her... as there was nothing more infuriating or embarrassing than being caught, literally, with your pants down, she finished stripping once inside the tiny hut and made sure there were leaves or paper there before squatting appropriately to relieve herself.

The area is empty besides herself and the dog, and the outhouse was deserted, if a bit smelly. She relieves herself without incident.

Sable walks out of the outhouse with a contented smile, looking off into the rift nearby with a sigh, "This place would probably be rather nice if not for that thing. Maybe we should visit sometime after this all blows over."

Stretching in the morning air and feeling renewed, Sable decided it was about time to do a quick check of the warehouses, wondering what tools and other devices were left behind, and a few valuables wouldn't hurt either. She just needed some idle morning activity to finish rousing herself while deciding what to do next.

Sable searches the area, the dog bounding around at her heels.

Perception: Failure

She doesn't find anything of use or value, nor does she find any sign of the demons or monsters she'd heard were in the area.

(Half an hour to an hours walk, depending on whether or not you get distracted.)

"I have no idea what actually drove those people away, but whatever it was, it isn't around here... hmf." Sable muttered to her canine friend, moreso for herself than the dog, naturally.

She gave her surroundings one final glance and decided it was time to move on, going back to the offices and disabling and hiding the traces of her alarm system, but keeping them generally close together in case she returned. "On the upside... since this area is fairly secure, I can always come back here if anything gets really bad in the city."

With her last efforts made, she donned her armor once more and started towards the town, gun at the ready.
