Heavily depends on the game. Obviously animation is always great but it also probably quadruples the time each scene takes to implement, which is why I wouldn't insist on it since it thins out content.
Imo action games require animations, stills would just feel jarring, while animation in RPGs often feels a bit overkill.

if you're talking about RPGmaker and VN then animation is not important.

If you're talking about sprite based action/platformer game then animation is important

Battle fuck is when the combat is entirely based on sex - it's first to cum to lose basically.
Combat rape is when the enemies can try to ruck you (and usually restrain you) during a normal fight. It usually goes with other thing like getting having a raped scene if you lose or getting drained of mana by H attack leading to defeat if mana reach 0... (you can look at some of Acerola most recent game like "treasure hunter claire" for what's CR).

I heavily prefer a game to have above average animation (none of that stuff that looks like sliding still jpg images of characters around to resemble movement). If it doesn't though, the next most important aspect is the sound design and voice acting. Monster girl quest comes to mind as a good example. Otherwise, as pretentious as this sounds, that game better be phenomenal or I'm out.

Also have to agree with a few people here, I absolutely despise the rpgmaker genre. I'd rather not spend time playing a mundane game that's done a thousand times better in normal rpgs/jrpgs when the only appeal to it is the smut (no matter how good it is, just give me the gallery lol). Only exception I had to this was The Last Sovereign cause the story and writing of that game is like... really good, to the point that I don't mind the boring rpg combat stuff as much.

The way I see it is: I'd rather have no animation than bad animation but GOOD animation elevates a game considerably in my eyes.

Whether it's animated CGs or sprite/pixel art, if it's done well then the game is so much better for it. When it looks like someone smashing Barbie dolls against each other that's when it becomes distracting and actively makes things worse. In that sort of situation I'd rather just have descriptive text and a still CG because at least that doesn't take me out of the moment due to me laughing my fucking arse off. Not all the time anyway, some of the CGs they come up with still make me crease myself laughing.

Oh so Combat Rape is like MGQ, and BattleFuck is like ROBF.

Is there any reason people prefer CR over BF then? Seems like BF is where the action is, and I'm saying this as a BIG fan of MGQ.

My personal view on animations is: do if you dare, not for fame.

As others already mentioned, creating animations is time-consuming, especially if you're not too experienced yet. And even if you are, you're spending a great amount of time on part of the visual flair, not the acutal gameplay. Also, getting comfortable with your designs should be a higher priority than making them move. A picture alone can draw in many people, animating it is going beyond most comfort zones and right into the devil's asshole, since people (including me sometimes) can be real dicks if your animation doesn't please the crowd.

But yeah, if your spritework or 3D animation looks good, you automatically have my attention. Too bad most projects of that caliber tend to quietly die off...

Not quite. MGQ is just another version of BattleFuck (not a fully BF game) since most of the attacks the monster girls use are sexual in nature and cumming means being defeated. MGQP however would be an example of combat rape since vast majority of attacks are physical or magical in nature with some sexual ones thrown into the mix as well.

Side by side, games with CR are just generally done better than BF as the CR tends to be just one of the ways to get H. While BF games usually have the BF as the only way to get the H.
This actually wouldn't be a bad thing if they were all at the quality of ROBF, but most are not. Usually just a static image that doesn't even reflect what you or the girl is doing.

Now as to the topic of animation. It's nice to have but I still prefer artwork over it. A game with great artwork and no animations will always be better than a game with animation but mediocre or worst artwork. I do however think all VN's at this point should include animations. It's a nice trade off for not having gameplay. Also a game using 3D images with no animations is instant trash.

Depends on the quality of the animation. I'd take mediocre still CGs over atrocious animation. Certain circles are notorious for rapid-fire releasing games with animation where the term "stop-motion" would be generous. Then you have games like the recently-translated Fallen, or the somewhat-elderly Sengoku Rance, both of which are objectively better games with still CGs.

Of course in a perfect world, I'd take both, although some games end up being strictly better without the CGs, when there is a limited set of more-detailed animations (Parasite in City).

Animations can do more harm than good if poorly done, but usually they're a net positive. Though I'd still rather have double or triple the content in still images, depending on the type of game and how the scenes fit in.

A lot of it is honestly a question of execution rather than simply a binary yes/no on animation. For example, three of my favorite H-games are Forest of Blue Skin (full sprite animation), Desire Dungeon (mostly CGs but some have ghetto pseudo-animations via movement), and Monster Girl Dreams (didn't even have art for a while and still doesn't have much, no animations, text focused).

Now for clarity. Yes, I would generally prefer to have high quality fluid animations in every game. Stuff that relies too much on just still CGs and doesn't have writing to back it up is meh for me. But realistically high quality animations are hard and expensive, and in the grand scheme of things take a distant backstory to either really good gameplay (FOBS is fun as fuck to play) or strong writing that lets me envision the scene much more vividly in my head (DD and MGD fall here for me). In general I'm more about the writing than the gameplay (DD gameplay is pretty trash lmao) but good writing + good gameplay is the dream and if a game has those then animations are just a "eh it'd be nice but whatever lol" sort of thing.

Somehow almost all RPG maker games tend to fuck up everything mentioned so far with eerie consistency. >_>

If it's a RPGMaker game without any animations or any innovations I won't bother to play it. If it's a game that can actually be fun to play, sure, why not?

Maybe unpopular opinion : Animations can gladly be gone for good for me. Most of the time I see a game that has animated CG/Art I'm out of there.

If you asked me, animations arent necessary but they're definitely better if you do them right. If we're taking like a lazy 3 frame animation then probably dont even bother but if you're doing a fully animated thing, yeah it takes longer but I feel like it'll make your game stand out a bit more, considering CG stills are pretty much the norm now and dime a dozen, coming across fully animated is pretty difficult to come by. Also, imo, if your game isn't that good or interesting, I feel like having stills instead of animation makes it easier to just not care for a game and find a gallery or something. Animation kind of makes a lesser game feel a little more worth it to me, personally.

No animations at all is better than bad animations.

Which means if the game's something that *needs* animations, then the animations will make or break the game.

Wow, this was VERY informative! Animation's about as popular as I thought, but I can see that people can still appreciate games w/o it if they handle the erotic aspect of the game well enough.

I like to see girls struggling while they are tied up.
