The grinding of wooden wheels sounded off along the dirt path. A pair of red oni were pulling a cart of harvested rice to turn into sake, one oni was the brother, an the other, a sister. Truth be told, she was excited as well. All the hard work they put into making so much Sake was going to be put to the test. They spent years making little batches to test the wild rice they found, figuring out exactly how to get the best flavours and the most alcohol from it. The hardest part was figuring out when to stop the fermentation process and sell it. They discovered that the rice harvested in the autumn and winter produced the smoothest and strongest sake they had ever tasted, while the early spring rice made a flavourful cooking sake. Proper fermentation was impossible in the summer, but the rice was very good for eating, and the grains they stored could be eaten all year around.

When they finally reached they home and brewery, they immediately unloaded the cart, Hallerna grabbing eight huge sacks at a time, while her brother struggled with one. Pausing at the rolling drums, she turned to her brother. "Are you sure you want to name this the Twin Peaks Brewery? I can't figure out why.."

Unlike the ritual, Olaf seemed quite used to it. He took the water gourd, and drank from it nonchalantly. "Yeah, yeah," Olaf groaned at her reminders of their daily process. "I know how it goes by now, sis." he stated, before standing up after a time and pushing the cart along with her once more. Upon reaching their house, Olaf seemed ready to collapse. It was just one smooth scaling up a hill, no flat ground or break in between before they reached the home, and as such, he'd normally be able to lift two or even three, but as tired as he was, one was good enough.

"It was just a name I threw out there, Hall," he replied to her question. "If you don't want it, it doesn't have to be that name. It was just something that came off the top of my head, you know?"

"Well, it's better than what I can come up with," she replied with a slight grin as they emptied the sacks of rice into a wire mesh drum. Together they emptied the rice into the large drum. Hallerna then worked the cranks to make it spin, while Olaf made sure it stayed greased and swept up the debris that came out of the mesh. After nearly an hour, they empty the drum into the sifting belt, letting the wild rice drop onto cotton sheets below, separating them from the tortured twigs and leaves that survived polishing. Hallerna hummed in approval at a particularly well shaped twig. Far too small to be any use, but the right shape. She added it to the tinder pile.

The rice clean of large debris, the two siblings brought the sheet of rice out into the sun, where they poured spring water from a stream onto it. Then, they covered the rice in a wire mesh to protect it from birds and left it to dry.

They took a break to eat and re-hydrate before setting about their final task for the day.

For the next couple of hours, Hallerna took sacks of cleaned rice to a millstone, and ground the rice into a thick granny sand. The sand would later be mixed with a special fungus and srping water to ferment for two to three weeks, but that would have to wait. They didn't have enough vats. Hallerna heard the occasional "Blech!" from her brother, highlighting his job in keeping track of the vats that did have fermenting rice, to make sure they were coming along properly. Fermenting rice had a particular flavour at different stages, and any contamination would change that.

After she was done, she collected some towels and fresh clothes for herself, and found her brother. He was gurgling water to clear his pallet of the latest pre-brew taste. "I'm heading up to the source," she told him. She waited for his reply before taking off for the source of the spring water they used for their brewing. There was a pool they used for washing just a step down from where they started redirecting the water for their use, right where the water was still hot with steam.

Olaf sighed as she came up with those names. "I honestly doubt places like that even exist, Hall," he said with a grimace before he assisted her with emptying the rice and then sweeping the drum. Being a far less physical task, he handled it far better than he did with pulling the heavy cart. Given that he'd been through the process before, the belching that came from him was far more mild than it was his first time handling the job when their parents got them into the job. And as she told him where she was going while he cleaned out his mouth, he replied with a grunt and nod, leaving it at that.

Once she made her way up to the source, Hallerna was greeted to the sight of several harpies drinking from the water flapping their wings, and hiding in the trees as they heard her approach. From their nests, they warily looked down at her silently, half a dozen eyes staring at her with calculating eyes.

Hallerna barely paid the harpies any attention. She tried making friends with them on many occasions, but they were so skittish she never got a chance to really talk to them. They were harmless, at least.

Still, it was turning out to be a good day. Hard and early work, a relaxing bath, then a debut at the bars. Hallerna could only smile pleasantly.

She quickly stripped, tossing her work clothes aside on some rocks, then eased into the steaming water. She decided to take a few minutes to simply soak before starting with the soap.

"We're almost there!" Hallerna would hear a male voice announce itself in the distance. The voice of a man echoing through the trees caused the harpies to stir, but they seemed to take Hallerna into consideration before thinking of attacking the source of the voice. "Are you sure about this? This place doesn't seem safe." replied a girl's voice, nervous, and rightfully so. There were harpies and an oni not far from them.

While Hallerna was washing herself, there was no doubt that the duo of humans were heading her way, especially when she heard their footsteps drawing closer. How she would welcome the approaching humans was up to Hallerna, as she had the element of surprise in her favor.

Hallerna perked up in excitement at bustle of approaching visitors. Of the dozen or so natural hot springs, a man (and friend) had stumbled upon hers! But to do?
