Re: Amarant: Noble's Path - Dec. 15th

Primary goal: Protect Maria until she recovers enough to help.
Cast Fireball. If possible aim for the middle one and hope that the explosion will hurt the other two as well. After that use the crossbow and shoot a bolt at the nearest rat.

As soon as she has recovered enough Maria should blind the rats.
Sounds like a good plan to me.

Re: Amarant: Noble's Path - Dec. 17th

Results:
Fireball the middle rat hoping to damage the others.
Try and protect Maria.
Shoot with the crossbow as a follow up if they’re still at range.
Dagger fallback – with optional spells.

Fluff Action: Howling winds! They echoed from there! From there the howling winds! He lifted his arm, smacking first one and then the other with a heavy fist. He growled, his meaning clear. They scurried, quickly, loping up the ground in big eating strides. They dodged the little pressure plates they knew well, they noses sniffing, smelling something strange. . . but under that strange, something delightful. Something female. Something still in heat. They stopped at the sight as they beheld it. They came upon two figures, both looking prime, both with flat bellies and no scent of other besides themselves on each-other. A snarling grin bloomed, eyes glittered in anticipation, the legs already tensing. - Ratfolk, leader one of the trio.

Z Minor Action: Jane looked into her friends eyes, they would be the first to show any difference. Maybe there was an extra gleam in her eyes, or a color differentiation.

A snarling grin bloomed, eyes glittered in anticipation, the legs already tensing.

And so it was that the three rat-folk managed to find the girls. The pack immediately recognized the scent that emanated from between their legs, the moss still arousing the two women. They weren’t the first to wander into the cave and fall prey to the lust-inducing spores, just two more in an unfortunate string of women. Some came with their lovers, exploring the cave during a romantic sojourn to the beach. Others were random adventurers, coming to explore the ruins. Whatever the case, they almost always became a plaything of the creatures that lived in the cave, warm flesh to be enjoyed by the pack. Most eventually escaped, but there were stories of those who stayed willingly, too addicted to the pleasure they provided…

---

Jane knew all too well how to deal with these creatures, the details of the last encounter still fresh in her mind. She felt anger, part of it forming in the energy that gathered in her palm. Another, much smaller part of her however, felt longing: she saw the three engorged members before her, the pink flesh plainly visible against their dark fur. She remembered how good it had felt to simply have one rub against her lips – that small part of her mind asked: how good would it feel inside…?

The thought was quickly silenced, Jane resisting the sensations she felt between her legs. She was disgusted with herself for even contemplating such a thing, although she assured herself it was only due to her mental state: She had her first kiss not but a day ago, surely these thoughts were a result of her affliction.

The rats themselves appeared to want exactly what the others had tried to take. They were crouched for the moment, but Jane got the feeling they would pounce at any moment. Whatever their plans were, Jane had begun conjuring a fireball the moment she realized they were there. She had to protect Maria: While she had no idea what that scroll did or what it may bring about, Jane knew for certain that the most immediate threat were the three rat-folk who had just appeared. And no sooner had she finished conjuring the spell, did the trio lunge forward.

Jane threw up her hand, her stance not unlike the statue on the other side of the room. An orb, rich with light and fire, burst forth from her palm as the magic discharged successfully. The trio had barely enough time to register what had happened before the closest one was awash with flame. It let out a shrill cry as it was cast back, flailing wildly as it attempted to escape the inferno. It was no use however, as the creature eventually ceased to move. The other two, while knocked off balance for a moment, continued to charge, the pair only a few feet away now. It was enough of a delay however, for Jane to ready her crossbow.

After she had launched the fireball, Jane immediately went for her crossbow hanging by her side, unclipping it from her bag. She pulled a bolt free and set it on top before bringing it to bear. A second more to aim and then she squeezed the lever…! Nothing happened.

Time seemed to slow as panic swept over her. Her fist clenched the lever, desperately urging for the bolt to fire, but still it remained in place. The mechanism refused to release the bolt and Jane’s mind scrambled for a reason, some explanation as to why it wouldn’t fire. She couldn’t up with anything – she knew naught about crossbows or how they worked. What she did remember however, in the moments as she reached for her dagger, was the scene by the far wall. Of the dead man who most likely wielded the crossbow, of the cocked crossbow itself lying on the ground, and of the dead rat-folk, not a single bolt to be found on their corpses.

The rat-folk slammed into Jane as she had just removed her dagger from its sheathe. It hurled itself at them just as Maria had stood up, throwing its shoulder into the attack. Jane fell back into Maria, the two of them falling over onto the ground. Jane’s breath escaped her, her body trying to recover from the blow to her front and the rough landing at her back. She had fortunately managed to keep a hold of her dagger as she fell back, but the crossbow had clattered away… for all the good it did her. She tumbled off of Maria, landing to the right. Maria’s status was still unknown, but Jane could hear her friend groan . As for rat that had tackled them, Jane immediately focused back on it, noticing it was ready to continue its assault. Jane was on her back at the moment, her legs facing the rat-folk as it prepared to leap on top of her. She only had a second or two react, but in that time, Jane…

Use the Ring of Bolt to attack the attacking rat (as much as I hate to waste the enchantment on a rat folk).

Son of a...

Anyway, Wave of Force the attacking rat, then down a mana potion. Apply Magic Armor before doing anything further.

Hopefully, the whole "Rat corpses and bolts" bit didn't seem unfair. I put the details there, but didn't draw any attention to them, on the off chance that someone might go "Wait a second..."

It wasn't meant to be punishment of any sort for failing to see it, but rather a small trap in a different and unusual form.

Nah, it's the kind of thing I do occasonaly when I GM. Rewards those paying attention and inconveniances those that are not, only midly is best of course ;) it makes the 'flavor' discription all the more important and not just a speedbump between action segments.

Then again I'm also the type of GM who rewards/encorages ingenuity rather than lateral by-the-book play, so I might not be the baseline.

On that note I suggest wave of forcing that Mo Fo' into the other one to prevent it taking advantage of our potentaly out-of-order ally.

If possible of course, otherwise just blast it off and then go to protect her.

I honestly fail to see the "details" you speak of. Here's the current description of the bodies (copy-pasted; emphasis mine):
It was a grim sight indeed, the smell of blood now wafting up to them as they approached the scene. A man laid against the wall, sets of long cuts in his shirt, the garment dyed a muddy crimson from the dried blood. Upon closer inspection it seemed he was clawed to death by the foes that stood around him. His head hung forward, over a cutlass that laid in his open palms – it seemed he fought to the death.

Around him laid three rat-folk, the three of them looking to have been stabbed and gutted by a sword, their deaths anything but clean. If Jackson was to be believed, this was the man he mentioned, killed by the rats before he could finish them off.

It felt weird, Jane leaning down to check on the man’s corpse – the sight of the dead man gave her little worry, but it still felt strange to search a dead man’s possessions. She eventually pushed away her apprehension, reasoning that he no longer had need of it. Maria kept watch as Jane searched him, paying special attention to the large hole in the wall.

---

Having gone through his pockets, and a bag that Jane managed to spot underneath his leg, they collected a few items as well as an additional bag to carry some stuff in… if they didn’t mind a few bloodstains:

A few feet from where he was, further towards the long corridor, was a small crossbow on the ground, the string still cocked back. A bolt was also found next to the weapon itself with five more on the man’s person. In the pack was a bottle of what appeared to be a very strong alcoholic beverage and a few gold coins, one of which seems to be quite a bit different from the others, an emblem of two bottles and a crescent moon set into its face. There was also the cutlass that the man wielded, but the blade is quite a bit larger than anything Jane or Maria have wielded.
So the rat-folk were killed by sword attacks, and both the dead guy and Jackson wield swords. It makes it seem like the guy fought (or at least tried to) with his cutlass and never even tried to use the crossbow. Maybe the rats got too close and there was no room to fire; maybe he didn't want to waste his bolts; or maybe the crossbow simply wasn't ready at the time, just like the crossbow used by our 'friends' guarding the entrance outside, and he couldn't reload it on time (there was no bolt loaded); or maybe the rats simply knocked the crossbow out of his hands before he could fire. The crossbow not working is literally the last and least likely explanation that comes to mind.

After all of that, I'd like to change my vote to:
Use "Wave of Force" and send the attacking rat into the other rat (if at all possible), then go help Maria.

Minor Action: Jane crosses her legs to make it harder for the rat to penetrate her in case he tries to.

Re: Amarant: Noble's Path - Dec. 17th

Well, I guess it is appropriate then that I attributed such a minor effect as this to it then, considering how unlikely it was. I may have been a bit too sparse in my description, but even so, it was meant to be, as the outcome was no more serious than a botched round and 3 damage. Let me be frank in saying: My expectation of anyone putting said details together and coming up with the actual answer was severely low - another reason the effects were very minor.

Still, I shall try to make efforts in the future to have any such similar scenarios hinted at more heavily, although... their occurrence may be even rarer now. Hopefully this doesn't reflect poorly on my ability to convey information to the voter, but considering how unlikely I had initially planned on having this be a line of thought amongst the reader, and the general feedback pointing towards just that... I guess there isn't too much of an issue anyway.

To go into it a bit more, my approach usually has a very strong positive correlation between danger of the trap or scenario, and the amount of details and hints that are provided as a method of alerting the voters to it. As this was extremely small in its effect, it did not have much in the way of details. But be assured: I shall make details much more apparent for any occurrence moving onward, big or small.

In any case, let us move past this and let me simply take it as a lesson on how to better plant these dangers... as I've even seen smaller things boil over into the dreaded realm of "Drama" in other places among the participants when things such as these occur.

Nah, I can see where you were coming from with the crossbow thing. Sherlock would've noticed.

Anyway, if the rat's about to jump on us, can't we just draw the dagger and let it impale itself? Which would hopefully make it easy to dispatch, and then there's just the last one - and I like to hope we could take out a rat-thing in a 1v1 fight.

I was wondering about the crossbow personally just thought he either didn't have time to use it or that it malfunctioned.

Re: Amarant: Noble's Path - Dec. 19th

Results:
Tied! Dagger and Wave of Force!

(Well, it was when I began writing – I’ll just change it up a liiiiittllleee... and there we go!)

Minor Action: Jane crosses her legs to make it harder for the rat to penetrate her in case he tries to.[/I]

The rat-folk leapt at Jane. With only a second to react, Jane did what came naturally and pointed her dagger up and into the air.

Whether the creature had noticed the blade or not, it fell upon her, the steel driving into its chest. It let out a panicked squeal, thrashing about with its claws. Jane tried to hold it at arm’s length, channeling the magic needed to cast the beast away from her. She shied away from the frantic swipes of the rat, turning her head to the side. While they avoided her face, she let out a cry of pain as they grazed her chest, a large tear revealing the top of her bosom. She redoubled her efforts to push the fiend away, knowing she only had to hold it at bay a few more seconds.

The rat-folk also bucked with its hips, trying desperately to find someplace for its engorged member to bury itself. While it did push itself against her, Jane had made sure to cross her legs as soon as the beast leapt into the air – she had learned well how to deal with their kind.

The spell took time to build, the rat continuing to swipe wildly. Fortunately, Jane managed to keep the creature at bay, the attacks missing her. If the situation was more calm, she might have wondered why the beast didn’t attempt to rend her arms or go for an easier target, but instead she simply focused on positioning her palm near the center of the beast’s chest as she felt the magic build to point. A small, blue jolt of light burst from Jane’s hand, sending the rat cascading across the room. All the fear and anger she felt must have been thrown behind the spell, as her target was cast like a ragdoll. It would have made it to the other end of the pool, but inside collided with one of the columns. An audible crunch could be heard as it connected with the stone pillar, the body then plunging into the water as it fell.

Jane let out a gasp of relief as she was freed. She wasn’t about to rest now however – there was still the final rat-folk to deal with. She turned to Maria, but all was not as expected:

The scene was just like the previous encounter, with the rat-folk sitting atop her friend. This time however, the creature grasped not at her dress, but at its own head. Maria held her palm on the creature’s head, a soft, purple glow emanating from where she touched. Jane initially thought she was using her Daze spell on the creature, but the purple aura gave her a moment of pause. The answer would have to wait, as she needed to save her friend.

Jane ran over, dagger in hand, and plunged the blade into the other foe’s neck. It didn’t even let out a cry as the steel cut deep, its arms simply falling down and its body going limp as it tumbled to the side. Maria kicked it away, her eyes intense as she stared at the now-dead rat. Her breathing was heavy, her chest moving up and down as closed her eyes and recovered.

Jane stood back, letting Maria compose herself. She looked about, glancing at the charred remains and the brown shape still beneath the surface of the pool, making sure that the other two were dead. While the tension of the fight was gone, Jane couldn’t help but wonder about what she saw: She had technically never seen Maria use Daze, but did it always manifest itself in such a way? Was it perhaps connected to what had happened earlier, with the scroll? Those questions would have to hold for a little longer, as Jane knelt down to check on Maria.

“Are you alright?” she asked, Maria turning to look at her.

She held a wide-eyed expression for a time, as though only aware that Jane had said something. She met Jane’s gaze, but then looked away for a moment, her eyes darting about as though lost in deep thought.

“Maria!”

Jane was a little more insistent now, grabbing Maria by the shoulders. Her concern for her friend was growing the longer the silence between them held.

Eventually Maria looked back to Jane as she let out a small laugh. Then, a smile spread across her face as she brought her hands up to hold Jane.

“I- I was right! The scroll… It can be done!” She was almost hysteric as she continued, her sentences making little sense.

“It was possible! They had the potential! This… it was possible!”

“Maria! What is possible? What are you going on about?”

Jane could feel her concern turning to fear as her friend went on – what had happened to her?

“I learned a spell!” she spoke triumphantly, “The scroll! It taught me a spell! No months of training… no books… As soon as I had finished reading it… I already knew it!”

Jane didn’t know what to say. Spells took months to learn, years if they were powerful. Had Maria truly learned what it should take months to accomplish?

“Maria… how do does one even… surely, there is something-“

“I know! I doubted it too… but this is what we came here to find! The stories, these whispers of the truth were genuine!”

Jane understood what Maria was saying, but she was still skeptical. As a magic-user herself, the idea of being able to permanently learn magic sounded like a fantasy, something that other mages dreamed of. If this were true, then this fantasy that Maria had actually existed.

“Look, here!” Maria said, standing up.

She motioned to a pile of burnt parchment, the remnants of the scroll she had read.

“This scroll held instructions on how to channel the spell, how to cast it, what it does… Everything! Reading it aloud was the key!”

She knelt down and plucked a few pieces from the pile.

“The sense of power I felt as that knowledge came to me…”

Maria’s eye shown with a certain sense of wanderlust as she stared at the singed remains.

“We need to find more.” She states plainly. “If there are more scrolls like that… we must find them! This is everything I could have hoped for…”

She eyed the remains in between her fingers with a look that seemed almost insatiable.

As for Jane, she was a bit taken aback by the whole matter: Maria seemed fine for all intents and purposes… but she was still surprised how content she was with what had just transpired. The effect of the scroll’s reading, the rat-folk attacking them… it had all seemed a bit much, yet Maria seemed to extremely resilient all things considered…

“Alright! Enough delay – let us continue our search, lest that other mage find more of these scrolls before we do!”

B. If this other mage is finding these scrolls, who knows what they'll use them for. For all we know, he's using them to make himself more powerful. He needs to be dealt with quickly, and any of those scrolls that can be recovered need to be taken. You can come back and check the chest out some other time. Preferably when the cave isn't full of bandits and evil wizards.

Re: Amarant: Noble's Path - Dec. 19th

First Jane and Maria get up and perform a quick check of their surroundings, to make sure there are no more enemies – rats or otherwise – headed their way.

Next, Maria is a little too excited, and that might become a problem, so Jane needs to do something about it, such as:
Jane faces her friend, holds Maria’s hands in her own, and pushes Maria against the wall. She then kisses Maria on the lips for a few seconds (enough to get her friend’s full attention) before pulling away. No tongue, unless Maria starts it. After that Jane leans closer to her friend and whispers in Maria’s ear:
"Maria, I’m really glad you are alright and that you found something to increase your abilities, but you need to calm down and focus! You are getting too excited, and you might end up making a mistake or missing something important as a result. I understand why you’re so excited and I know how important this is for you, but try not to get carried away. Alright?"

After that Jane should ask Maria about the new spell she learned (it’s a good idea to know what she can do now) and while listening:
Minor Action: Jane drinks a mana potion

After that proceed with the original plan, but with some changes:
- Finish searching the shelves for anything else of interest, especially other intact scrolls and an item that can hold water. If they find a vessel that is clean enough they should take a sample of the pool’s water so that they can examine it later. Also search for anything they can use to take out the "bracelet" in the pool without touching the water.
- Leave the chest for later – hopefully they can examine it on the way out.
- Don’t touch the gems on the statue – that’s just asking for trouble.
- The anti-magic field needs more investigation. For starters approach the area and see if the orb of light Maria is holding disappears or remains – this way they’ll know if it merely blocks casting, or fully negates spells. The difference is important during battle. Also try to figure out its range. Since Jane and Maria have to pass through the anti-magic area they should make the most of it and learn what they can

Jane and Maria head down the stairs after the mage’s group, but try to be quiet, so as not to alert the other party of their presence (in case the sounds from reading the scroll and fighting the rats did not reach them.

Minor Action: The whole time the two girls remain alert, looking and listening for any sign of approaching danger – both in front and behind them.

P.S.: The whole "Jane presses Maria against the wall and kisses her" is an idea I’ve had since before the girls got in the temple. I just didn’t get a chance to use it until now.
