There's been a lot of questions about what exactly the Reputation System is and how you can use/check it. And all the questions are technically justified because we've never once clearly defined it. Everybody just learned it as they went along. I think it's high time that we end the questions once and for all with a single FAQ thread.

So let's see if I can't clear up some confusion here.

What is the Reputation System?
The Reputation System is how member of the forum can judge other members' posts. The reputation you can get is categorized between positive reputation and negative reputation, which we shorten to rep and neg rep.
We generally use the rep system as a fun way to judge each other, rather than call them out in public, negative or otherwise.

What's the point in the rep system?
Absolutely none. You don't get anything special, except maybe recognition in the forums that you're a veteran member or something.

A long time ago, we used to be hosted by other service providers. One rejected us due to their anti-porn policy. The other because of the horrible conditions, specifically the massive, uncontrollable adbots. When Aika purchased the forums here, a number of features we never had showed up, such as each member having their own profile page with walls to post on, but more specifically the rep system. It was such an interesting idea, we kept it around.

That guy said something hilarious/offensive/useful/useless/whatever! How can I add or subtract the amount of rep he has?
Here's a picture tutorial.
The first thing you want to do is locate on the post you want to rep a scale icon. It's at the top right part of each post.
Spoiler

Now, when you click it, you'll be given an option to select whether you want to give positive or neg rep, as well as a box to leave a reason for your rep. You can leave it blank if you want, but it's encouraged that you make a comment because it gives us all something to read about.
Spoiler

When you finish your message, you get this pop-up.
Spoiler

Note that I actually changed my rep because I don't really hate Raptor. it says I added rep. If you give negative rep, you get this instead.
Spoiler

Where can I see my own reputation?
There's actually a number of ways you can do this.

Method 1
The first way is the quickest, and vaguest, method.
Spoiler

The more bars you see there, the more rep you have. There's also a neg rep variation, in which the number of bars are red. If that happens to you, that generally means we don't like you.
Spoiler

Method 2
This requires a little digging. And by a little, I mean, none at all. At the top of every page is a toolbar with a number of options. Click User CP. This is your control panel and allows you to customize your profile, as well as see your reputation.
Spoiler

The first thing that should come up is your list of reputation, starting from the most recent and below.
Spoiler

There, you can read the comments people leave. You can also see the exact numerical value of how much rep you have, by checking the top right corner of the chart.

Method 3
This final method is more of a ranking list to see where you are in the reputation race.
At the toolbar, find the Member List tab.
Spoiler

From there, click on the tab Reputation To sort the list from highest rep to lowest.
Spoiler

Just a quick note, you'll never surpass Toxic or Anti. They both cheated.

How is reputation calculated?
We don't have an exact answer to that because it'd require more work than any of us are willing to put into it. But the basic premise is that the amount of rep someone has pretty much determines how much rep they can give. So for instance, if you got rep from someone at the top of the reputation list, you'd get a pretty large chunk of rep versus a lurker who has only one bar of rep. There's a numerical value to it as well, but that's the work that we're unwilling to calculate.

One small thing to note: A couple member tested out how much rep they could give, and ended up discovering that the neg rep you give is half the amount of points of your positive rep. In other words, you would need to neg rep someone twice to give them neg rep equal to the amount of one positive rep from you.

Edit - I went digging a little, and saw that Aika actually told us a couple years ago how this works.

That's still not it.

Your reputation points are different from your reputation power.

Your reputation points is simply how liked you are (as in how much people have +repped you, if someone with a rep power of 2 +reps a post, your reputation goes up by 2.)

Currently, this is how reputation power is calculated:

Every 75 days, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

For every 250 posts, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

For every 15 points of reputation, users gain 1 point of reputation-altering power.

A user must have 5 posts and at least 5 points of reputation (not hard, you start with 10) before he can affect others with reputation.

A user can give 10 reputations over each 24 hour period.

You must give reputation to 5 different users before you can hit the same person again.
Of course, this is very dated, so whether this is still accurate or not is debateable. However, this is the most exact answer as to how much rep power one has I've found so far.

How do I get rep?
Here's a list of ways to get positive rep:
1. Post hentai in a clear manner. This can be a hentai game, doujin, or even an image set. As long as it contributes to the forums, there're bound to be people who rep you.
2. Post something funny. And since we're all very high-brow, it damn well better be funny or you might even get neg rep for being unfunny.
3.Post something useful. If you post something that aids someone else, such as a walkthrough for a hentai game or delivering the latest of Zone's flashes, you'll find some rep.
4. Post something people agree with. If you do a well-thought out post in a debate, for instance, people will recognize that you brought up a good point and reward you as such.
5. Totally random. Some people just throw out random rep so they can rep someone again. More on that later.

Here's a list of ways to get neg rep:
1. Horrible grammar. We may be perverts, but we loved English class. Please use at least a modicum of decent spelling when you're posting.
2. Be an asshole without justification. We're pretty lenient about freedom of speech and all that, but if you can't explain your dickhead behavior, you'll get some neg rep and probably some administrative punishment.
3. Be a "douchebag" or a hentai dumper. Members, like me, use these guys as punching bags so we can reduce the amount of rep needed to re-rep someone. (Hentai dumpers are the guys in the hentai section that post everyday with vague information and suspicious looking links to hentai. Douchebags can be found here.) Note: This may or may not apply anymore, as a lot of dumpers and adbots have more or less been eradicated.
4. Totally random. Like positive rep, neg rep can just be tossed around for no reason.

What's this about waiting to rep someone again?
Basically it's this feature that stops you from just jacking up someone's rep exponentially, so cheaters like Toxic won't be able to blow us out of the water. Basically when you try to rep someone you've already repped recently, you'll get this message.
Spoiler

It means exactly what you think it'd mean. You have to give other people rep before you get to rep the original person again. You need to rep 5 other people before you can rep the same person again. I'm not sure on that though, so if someone can clarify, please feel free.

I got grey rep. What does this mean?
The rep you got was basically valueless. Whoever gave it to you probably has very little/no rep whatsoever, and thus his repping power is nonexistent.

I wanna reply to a comment I got on my rep. Where can I do that?
This thread.

Someone gave me neg rep. I demand blood. What can I do?
Quit bitching.

If anybody has any questions that haven't been answered here, feel free to post in this topic or send a PM to Nunu.

I really didn't. But I thought you thought I did, because you counted me with AI, who actually DID cheat.

Re: The Reputation System FAQ

Gray rep means it the rep giver didn't increase OR decrease your rep. They did nothing but maybe leave a little comment, if they left one at all.

Also, I love your profile warning :p

Re: The Reputation System FAQ

Well AI cheated through the system. But you're much worse. You manipulated the people. Cheater.

Re: The Reputation System FAQ

There's been some people asking what rep is over. and OVER. and OVER. and no one could explain it.

As a note, there is no option to give grey rep. It simply means the person who gave it hasn't got enough posts to actually be able to influence rep. I think you need 50.

Also, in theory, I suppose it might be possible to gain multi red bars? Can we get clarification on that?

I also thought the re-rep number was either 5 people or a period of time, although they're both guesses. I say period of time because I rarely rep anyone yet I know I've neg repped someone twice before I've given rep to 5 different people, but the instances of giving were separated.

That said, I can't +rep Darkfire, and I don't fucking remember when I last rep'd him. So maybe not time afterall.

EDIT2: It was on Dec 4th. So if there is a time thing, it's more than one week, but possibly not 2.

Re: The Reputation System FAQ

Yes, although multiple negative rep bars take a long time, they exist

I'm covering our bases. With this, nobody's allowed to ask. And whoever does will be mocked thoroughly.

Re: The Reputation System FAQ

We used to know how rep power was calculated(and person's rep power used to be visible), but Aika changed that when some people's rep power reached ~50, back when he actually spent time on the forum. The formula is dependent of both post count and rep.

Re: The Reputation System FAQ

I like the rep system. It is quite interesting to see what I am described as when I mouse over my rep bar.

Re: The Reputation System FAQ

They sorta can, I believe. Another forum I'm on uses the same system, and for some people who have gotten negrepped enough, their reputation just became their own name. Where it was like "Jesus, you're so shitty, the only synonym for your actions is you yourself," and your name becomes a punchline. I doubt that's an automatic feature, so I'm guessing it can

Just confirming what Toxic has said and cementing it further in truth, that yes more than one red bar can start to show up. Another forum I used to grace I saw a guy that had as many red bars as Toxic does green. They even do the different shade thing too that the green ones do.

The thing is, I don't think there is any blatantly racist, religious extremist, sexist, homo-phobic, arrogant, obnoxious, anti-everyone that isn't Macedonian, people around here to warrant getting that many red bars.
