Re: ULMF the Third (RP Thread)

As soon as Rapture said the word Sin was running forward, passing through the shield, the device sparking as the others' did. She let out a quick sigh of relief as she signaled for Suri and Grave to stack up against the side of the wall.

"Grave in front with yer swords, Suri behind me,"

Suri, receiving Sin's order, nodded in confirmation and executed the order. He ran quickly, pretty quick on his feet despite being rather short. The device that allowed him through the shield sparked as he ran. When he successfully got through, he quietly formed up behind Sin, his rifle held up at the ready. He turned around to cover their six, basically back to back to Sin. Occasionally he would look over his shoulder to look at Sin and Grave before looking back forward.

"I'm here," Suri whispered, letting Sin know he was in position.

Re: ULMF the Third (RP Thread)

Grave ran forward as soon as the signal was given, already drawing his sword. Anyone looking at him would have noticed that he seemed to be a little out of breath. He jumped into the shield, his own device activating to protect him from the defence system. Nodding at his superior's command, he quickly moved in front of Sin, running to the wall and ready to cut down anything in his path. As he dashed, he glanced one last time at the disabled lights. The drain on his reserves was noticeable, but it was a good trade. He was still operating more-or-less on a full tank, considering that what he conjured was merely a thin veil to stop the light. Making it appear so far away from him, however, was somewhat taxing. It was the kind of temporary mental fatigue he could recover from in a moment or two, provided he'd have some peace and quiet. For now, he'd have to shrug it off until the bots were scrapped.

"Look forward Suri. The others have our back. Our job is to cover this flank," Sin said quietly, barely looking over her shoulder.

Re: ULMF the Third (RP Thread)

(And lo, Shade accidentally activates Host's special abilities.)

Shade’s attempt to put something in Host’s pocket should have failed miserably. While the lack of visible genitals made it fairly easy to forget, Host was walking around in nothing but his scales - technically, naked. In a normal situation, Shade should have simply realised his mistake when trying to find a pocket of Host’s to put his item in… but instead, after walking up to the reptile, Arion moved his hand towards Host… and put something in the demon’s pocket. From this moment on, try as it might, Shade’s mind refused to believe that Host did not have any pockets; even realising that Host wore no clothes would not shake the man’s – …well, elf’s - belief that the Lurker diplomat had pockets, and he had put something in one. The others in the group might find this odd – if not for the fact that they were not paying attention. Even if they were looking directly at Host while it happened, the minds of everyone present failed to register the problem; as far as all present were concerned, Shade had put something in Host’s pocket, and even the most mentally astute of them only got a vague, peculiar feeling, closest only to the sensation of wondering where your keys have gone.

Grave’s spell went off, the lights went out, Rapture went in… and a group of the patrolling bots heading towards the ULMFers noticed her run in, their heads turning towards her as she ran up and flattened against the right corner of the wall. The other three groups of bots, on the other hand, remained oblivious, continuing to patrol along the building. The four machines that had targeted her continued to move towards the side of the building the ULMFer was hiding on. They were still only walking, but soon enough the machines would pass the corner, effectively eliminating the cover the wall of the building was providing. If that was allowed to happen, anyone trying to join Rapture would be without cover immediately after passing the shield.

Host went through second, immediately after Rapture; more than one person going through at a time would have caused issues with the shield and its mass detection - the complex wouldn’t be expecting two trucks at once, after all. The device shorted out on the way in for him, as it did for everyone else, but its job was done.

His sprint’s footfalls were echoed by bullet impacts around him as the bots alerted by Rapture decided he was a suitable target; the other three groups of bots, apparently alerted by the gunfire, all broke their patrol route and headed for the noises. The threatened zone Host had to run through wasn’t that great, maybe only 15 to 20 meters between the wall and the shield’s edge – less, as the bots took a brief moment to be able to recognise and lock onto the running target, certainly a little longer than a human would have. Still, Host fell into a roll for the last of the distance, lowering his profile amidst the four guns being robotically aimed at him. Despite his large form, the reptile got up with no wounds beyond scraped scales from his roll.
“Do you think they noticed us?” He asks the squad’s commander, grinning. Rapture had fired on the machines coming up on the left, the leading bot falling with several holes in its excuse for a head, before the bots had targeted her and fired back. As soon as she was behind cover again the attacking bots had stopped firing, their target lost – and Host gave them a new one, ducking out from behind the corner. His two maschinenpistoles peppered the heads of the three remaining bots, breaking each of the red-light cameras they were using to track targets. When the machines gave their counterpoint, Host ducked behind the wall – and the bots kept firing. Without their visual targeting, the bots appeared to be still tracking him by some other means… but were no longer able to account for the wall, pointlessly trying to shoot him through it. ...Wait... Host hadn't been holding anything. Where did his guns come from...?

Now that they had been alerted by gunfire, there was a group of bots getting quite close to each of the corners; while Rapture and Host continued to deal with the first group on the right hand side, a second group of four on the left were moving up unopposed – at least until Sinful and her squad got through. Shade had arrived somewhat sooner, but being unassigned to a squad, could have decided to join either corner. A good way behind each of the first bot groups was another group of four, also now heading up the side of the building, towards the ULMF squad. They currently couldn't fire on the ULMFers, as the bots in front were blocking their line of sight, and they were apparently too poorly coded to move into a better angle, instead only advancing forwards.

They’re dumb as bricks! They don’t take cover, I don’t think they account for their gun's kick - wait a minute…” Host broadcasts over the radio once the group is assembled, the last part probably unintentionally. Neither he or Rapture had managed to attack the bots on the right again, needing to wait for the bots' clips to run out and them to all simultaneously reload, since the machines now failed to recognise that they couldn’t hit their target. Because of this impromptu pinning fire, the three remaining bots had been able to get dangerously close to the corner.
Not exactly what I had been intending, but nevermind… the hellspawn thought to himself. It wouldn’t stop Shrike from going straight at the bots, of course, her blades doing a reasonable job of deflecting fire... but the Lurker stopped her with “Just a second. I’m going to try-“

Host left the explanation hanging, as the moment the bots all simultaneously emptied their clips, he immediately dashed out from behind the corner – not just ducking out, but actually running, (using the burns on the ground to be sure he wasn't running into the shield,) going far enough that the second group on the right was able to target him. They opened fire, the closer bots still reloading, and Host immediately dashed back behind the wall. The far group of bots continued to fire until they lost their target – but not before accidentally hitting two of the bots in the group in front.
Detecting a threat attacking from behind, the two bots that had been struck turned and opened fire on the trailing group. Their targets changed, the two turned and began moving towards the group behind them, leaving only one bot from the front group to turn the corner, just in time to meet Shrike’s blades. “AkakakakkarkaRR!” Host cackled as he opened the radio channel, “The scrap-piles haven’t even got anti-infighting protocols!

Re: ULMF the Third (RP Thread)

Shade took cover, wondering what possible use he was, since he rarely fought these days. He had planned to keep his word, but since those around him needed his help, he slid his revolver out and took a quick peek before ducking back into cover, mentally memorizing the positions of the bots, and wondering why they had such lousy battle tactics. He was still a bit confused over the lurker's pockets, and wondered why he had even attempted to place something in a pocket when the individual wasn't wearing clothes. He briefly considered he was going senile, then shook his head, mentally telling himself to focus. He considered what the next set of orders would be, but since he doubted they knew, or cared about his capabilities, he'd have to wing it. He built his energy into his hand, conjuring a small bit of fire, letting the heat run through him as he prepared to duck out and throw it, knowing it was going to give him a headache and exhaust him later.

Re: ULMF the Third (RP Thread)

Grave reached the wall, stopping close to the corner he and his fireteam were supposed to protect. Pressing his back against the wall, he took a couple of deep breaths, collecting himself. He was recovering from the projection - a little slowly, but without problems. Handling such a small number of bots wouldn't be a problem. Holding his sword with his right arm, he raised his left arm. A small sphere of black flame flickered into existence over his palm as he glanced at Sin. He had a nagging feeling that the woman would be less than pleased if he did something reckless. "Should I charge them? Or do we wait for them to get around the corner?" He asked, closing his left hand, the black flame disappearing inside his fist. With a quick movement, he raised his sword, grabbing it with both hands, sending the mana he had gathered a moment ago into the blade, reinforcing it, imbuing with his power. 'Time to see if you're any good as a mage's blade...'

"Bold. If you think that's the best way to use your abilities I'll cover you. Suri, we're going to be providing some covering fire. On your leave Grave," Sin said, a small smile on her features.

As she finished speaking she ducked around the corner and let off a few shots at the bots, making sure to leave enough room between herself and the wall that Grave could slip past her... and that the bots wouldn't be able to rabbit chase her.

Re: ULMF the Third (RP Thread)

Grave smirked. Darkness gathered around him, seemingly pouring forth from his form, sinking into his clothes. Those who were paying attention would have noticed that the aura seemed to shape itself into some kind of etheral armor, covering him completely. Energy gathered around his blade as well, the aura resembling a black flame. Nodding at Sin and Suri, he quickly jumped out of cover, swiftly passing the corner of the building and turning towards the bots. Even if they opened fire as soon as the saw him, the shield ought to stop the volley. This particular defensive phantasm was a result of careful study of protective magecraft, reinforcement and a few interesting techniques the mage had witnessed and picked up during his travels. A combination of both a magic field and advanced reinforcement, a technique designed to give an object a trait it didn't possess under normal circumstances. It was, in other words, a magical full-body equivalent of a bulletproof vest.

That being said, the darkling didn't rely only on his shield to avoid taking damage. He had one more trick up his sleeve. As he tensed, preparing to rush at his opponents, his teammates would probably notice that the aura around his feet crackled for a split-second, releasing black sparks. That was the only signal they had before Grave shot forward, not only protected and armed with magic, but propelled by it as well, using small, timed bursts to increase his speed. He didn't move in a straight line - he kept zig-zagging, trying to make himself harder to hit by rapidly changing the direction in which he was moving. His plan was simple - get close and start hacking everything to pieces. Subtlety had no place here - he was dealing with bots, which meant that dealing as much damage on each swing as possible was the optimal route here.

"....Us? You think they noticed -us-? No, they noticed your fat behind, reptile..!"

Head dipped around the corner, rifle following.. and without a moment's hesitation, their CO claims first blood with a swift, precise burst, ducking back into cover as the return fire snaps past her.

"Like I said. Few bullets and they go down.Careful on the way in. All units, we are weapons hot, take them down."

Brief show of head just results in more bullets, and the operative ducks back into cover with a curse as the second group of four rounds the far corner, backing up their allies.

"Right, they're still tracking us without the cameras, so visual.. thermal. Has to be thermal or electromagnetic, and Host..!"

Too slow to haul the reptile back into cover, she can just stare helplessly as he sprints out into open sight of the bots.. and back in, without getting shot. Two more bots drop under the friendly fire, but the dark-eyed officer glares daggers at Host.

"One more stunt like that and I kneecap you, and..."

Then the bots start fighting among themselves, and she glances briefly round the corner, before stalking towards her least favourite Lurker diplomat.

"Fine. So it worked this time - you got lucky. Doesn't mean that.."

And the last bot comes round the corner, Skorpion coming up from a reload.. but easily within striking distance of Shrike.

Re: ULMF the Third (RP Thread)

Shrike frowned a bit as Host pulled her back, bet she let him do his thing, even letting loose a chuckle as his antics turned out to work. She silenced herself when Rapture spoke out, however. Encouraging the reptile was probably a bad idea, after all.

The last bot rounded the corner, and Shrike was ready for it, she put herself into a graceful spin, hitting the bot four time is quick succession. She slices it's firearm in half with the first shot, then hits the head, chest, and waist, ending in a low crouch as the bot falls to pieces.

A flash went off in the back of her mind, and her arm moved up and towards her center just before the bots in the far group split their fire towards her. It deflected the first rounds aimed at her, and then she had ducked back behind the wall with the others. "So, what are we doing for an entrance?" She asks Rapture as she watched Grave streak towards the next group. "I know we're supposed to keep damage to a minimum, but I think the front door would be a really bad idea." She offered, then hrmmed a bit. "And then there's those up there." She added, pointing a thumb up towards the roof.

Suri nodded and faced forward, following suit after Sinful's orders. He brought up his rifle and then peeked out of the corner, shooting out a few shots at the bots. He dropped into a kneeling position to make for a smaller target, shooting toward the bots with precision. He ducked back behind the corner, watching Grave as he does what he did best -- mauling the bots with his magic.

"We got yer back, Grave," he said, ducking in and out to fire shots at the bots.

Re: ULMF the Third (RP Thread)

Shade rolls out, releasing the ball of fire into the group of bots, ducking back into cover getting really frustrated with being pinned down. He was gradually getting more and more tempted to summon a golem, and wondered what the crazy in charge wanted him to do. This wasn't like what he was used to. He was used to his team, or being alone. These people seemed mostly like lone wolves who did not trust these others, and it grated on his nerves. He did not want to use up his energy, though he hoped he wouldn't need any, and that no one would get hurt. Sighing, he radioed the CO, asking what exactly she thought he should do.

As Shade's message came over the radio, Sin ducked behind the corner for a brief second and sent a message of her own back before Pale could.

"Shoot the enemy. You have the sniper rifle, provide some damn covering fire,"

Shade sighs, remembering how he had set it aside at the advice of the CO.
"I'll see what I can do in terms of cover fire." Using his revolver, he takes a couple of shots before ducking back into cover, wishing he had brought the sniper right about now.

Re: ULMF the Third (RP Thread)

Rapture spins at the sound of bot footfalls behind her.. just in time to see Shrike finishing off the hapless android. With a sigh of relief, and a brief nod of thanks, she moves quickly back from the corner as another burst of suppressive fire chips the concrete.

Shade's voice over the radio, and Sinful's reply.. not to mention the fire he's throwing around, sparks something of a plan, though.

"Wait, Shade.. how much of that fire can you summon..? Can you spread it wide, like a wall..? Doesn't need to be particularly thick, just enough to fry their imaging."

Another glance to the corner, with the bots on the far side steadily advancing now that the infighting's been sorted out, and she puts the plan together.

"We can lure them to the corner.. fry their sensors and take them down in close quarters. Should be a barrel sh.... wait. What bots on the roof..?!"

Suddenly rewinding to something Shrike had said, and she'd dismissed at the time.. but that now clicked with a terrible urgency.

"Shrike's right. The front door would probably get messy," Suri said, ducking out around the corner to provide more covering fire for Grave. Suddenly, his rifle clicked and indicated that it was empty. Suri ducked back behind the corner, into cover, and released the mag. He reached into his coat and quickly reloaded another magazine, or rather two new magazines jungle-styled together.

With his SG 550 nice and filled up, he ducked back out of cover and then continued providing covering fire. He heard some stuff about bots on the roof and whatnot, and decided to keep it in mind. As he ducked out fire, he constantly checked the roof to make sure nothing was about to rain hell down on him and the squad.

Re: ULMF the Third (RP Thread)

Grave did not have far to run to reach a target; the bots were only perhaps ten meters from the corner. Still, four guns could put up a veritable wall of bullets, even when used as poorly as the bots were – in fact, their jittery aim actually made it perhaps more dangerous than usual to fight them. The darkmage took a less than direct route to the bots despite their closeness, running out past the wall rather than heading directly to them, forcing the machines to inefficiently track him while continuing to fire. For the most part the tactic was a success – though Grave still managed to be scraped on the shoulder by an errant round. Sinful and Suri found that covering fire was effectively a non-existent thing when dealing with these bots; they were far too dumb to actually avoid bullets, and were thusly unpinable. However, the impact of the bullets did cause any struck bots to change their attention to the pair of ranged attackers; three of the bots forced the pair of sharpshooters back behind the corner under scorpion fire, though not before both had been given several sparking holes in their head and ‘neck’. One lost all ability to target, firing its gun wildly and falling over as it lost co-ordination, hitting several of its fellows as its clip emptied. The struck bots turned their attacks to the downed bot, briefly, before Grave really tore up their world.

The darkling ran at the distracted bots from the side, his enhanced sword holding the enchantment reasonably well; each swing connected with a bot – and, while the stone longsword did not exactly cut through their metal armour, it was only because it shredded the sheets of steel instead. A strike against one’s metal chest piece caved the whole torso in, the armour crumpling significantly before the sword tore through, and without sticking in the cut. The bot collapsed in a heap, quite probably out of action. Ducking under a blatantly obvious punch, Grave retaliated with a swipe that tore off one of his attackers’ legs, dropping it to the ground and leaving it vulnerable. Not one to ignore the still standing bot now behind him, Grave used the momentum of his turn and rise to make a swing that tore the head right off of the remaining bot, the body immediately crumpling in a heap. Unfortunately, the lack of bots to visually cover him meant that the bot group further away was now able to open fire. Their rounds came down at about the same time that the crippled bot behind the darkling took a bead at his head…

Host, meanwhile, was gloating somewhat in the wake of his minor victory. “Of course, Rapture, of course, there’ll be no more of me making things nice and easy for you all… especially in a situation as lacking in danger as this. I wouldn’t want to take all of the challenge out of the fight…” The demon reclines against the wall, occasionally poking around the corner to take shots at the bots ever-so-slowly advancing on his corner. Rapture’s corner had about as certain a victory as they could get, assuming Shrike didn’t dash out.

Shade, I wouldn’t worry too much about being combat effective. You’re the medic, right? Just be available to heal when needed – not that there’s really any chance of that in this fight.” Host gives a dismissive wave – ”…Wait, what did Shrike-“ the Lurker is cut off by the sudden intervention of a almost karmatically delivered shoulder from a bot falling off the roof.

It was not the same kind of bot as the ones patrolling the building; this bot, while still skinless, had no head at all, and a more asthetic design. The torso was more curved than the other, boxlike bots, with a few bits of red paint mimicing little lights on it, and the internal machinery of the legs was exposed. They were also more dexterous, given that it had apparently leapt off of the roof onto Host. Finally, it had a pair of solid steel balls, about twice the size of fists, attached to pistons at the end of its arms – again, the machinery making it move was visible. It made the use of these implements perfectly clear to Host, as one slammed into his shoulder with a little *Squeltch*, and altogether too much *Crack*.

FUCK…!” came across his still active radio, as the demon brought his one unbroken gun-arm to the bot’s torso as best he could on his back, under a pile of metal determined to keep him there; as such, it was taking him a bit to actually twist the gun into a postion where he could hit the bot. Any outside attempt at removing the machine pinning Host was hampered somewhat by the four other ‘wrecking-ball bots’ that dove off of the roof at the same time, quite quickly choosing targets and managing to get a decent jog towards them – if not quite a total run. It wasn’t perhaps the most dangerous situation it the world, but compared to the bots they had been currently fighting, it was a startling difference.

The new bots had landed about midway between the corners being defended by the ULMFers, further towards Rapture’s corner than Sinful’s.

Re: ULMF the Third (RP Thread)

Suri widened his eyes as he saw bullets coming toward Grave's body due to his lack of visual cover. To him, things started to go into a bullet-time state as his reflexes kicked in. He released his rifle, allowing it to hang freely at his hip. With a few quick motions of both of his hands and arms, he drew his two handguns and took a concentrated aim for the bullets en route to Grave's body. Without much hesitation, he unleashed a barrage of his own bullets to intercept them. Suri's bullets weren't like regular bullets, these were red and resembled a strong, concentrated discharge of energy.

The bullets met at the same time, luckily for Grave, and the bots' bullets consumed by Suri's own. With a sigh, he heard Host's yell and then the wrecker ball bots jump down from the roof.

"Sin, eyes on four melee bots. And I think another one is on Host," Suri said, shooting at the bots that opened fire on Grave. He followed a more simplistic style to shoot this time, rarely swaying his arms and twisting his body. If one looked at a different perspective, it would look like he was a shooter in some shoot 'em up game.

"Ack. Put them down," Sin said, turning on her heel and dropping to a single knee, and started letting off single aimed shots at the jogging melee bots. Her breathing was steady, even. Her heart slow and calm. These bots weren't anything special, even if she had the sinking feeling that these were just the beginning.

"Grave pull back. Got something right up your alley back here," Sin called to her fire team.
