Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Leaders log, page 34 continued, 10 moonstone, year 242

Every year there's more goblins, Chip spotted some out in the field today, and as usual, everybody back inside, military ready, that stuff. Strangely, nobody seems to ever bother using the safehouse outside. Chip got back in safely. Now all we got to do is wait for the goblins to come to us. Oh, and I've taken the liberty to order a few weapontraps, there is one spot just outside where it seems goblins love to stay..Lets just say they won't want to stay there after the trap is done.
Anyway, battle, some action is nice for the marksdwarves, a few live targets instead of the praktise targets...Except that the marksdwarves aren't here, they left because they wanted to sleep. Not to worry, our cage traps captured most of the first goblins, and only a small amount got past them, and they still have to get past the ballista, bridge, and our warriors. Naturally, the ballista operator wasn't there either, and half the axedwarves were drinking in the dining room. One bowman got over the bridge before it got raised, he shot 2 dwarves, a crafter and a fisher, and a child, before being chopped into goblin bits by Sin, the only military dwarf that wasn't sleeping. One of the crafters bled to death right there, the fisherdwarf has a broken leg and arm, and the child broke it's lower spine. The craftsdwarf was mother to 3. The fisher appears to have lost his left thumb.

The first group ran off with 2 survivors, both injured.
The other groups came one at a time, but they all lost to the axedwarves at the bridge, we lost 2 war dogs, and when the horde of civilians coming to loot the dead were aproaching the goblins, the goblins thought all 40 of the looters were military, instead of the defenceless dwarves they were, and they ran. I've also noticed one of Sin's axesquad has a minor spine injury, so he will never train again. I'm not sure what to do with him yet, as he's a good axedwarf as he is, so making him train crossbows might not be the best idea.

Results:
10 captured goblins
1 dead civilian(Crafter)
2 wounded civilians(Fisher/child)
2 war dogs lost
Goblins humiliated.

(Just wanted to get the battle done)

HUMILIATION!

Well, it seems that we should let the civilians fight, at least they have a reason to do so.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Dwarf fortress is kinda easy once you figure out the controls, until then it's just pressing random buttons to see what happens.

Also, I got a tomb with goblins getting killed engraved at a lot of places, the other places are mythological creatures, dwarves, and some of the things I checked to see if he likes(And he likes them, mostly large gems). There's a view of the defensive fortifications too if Bagash wants to see that from his tomb(On request only for windows).

Also sorry for the smallish log, not a lot happened, just boring stuff about me building more of the same(Tombs for everyone so their possessions won't lay around as junk)

Leaders log, page 35, 12 granite, year 243

Oh, look, more goblins, and they're coming to test the new traps. Wonderful, the traps were just done, and we had no more cages for the cage traps. Oh, and at the same time, an elven diplomat arrived, bet he's going to be talking about the trees again, even though we've cut them all down already. And he might just bump into the goblins on his way in, so I've told everybody to take a seat and make bets. Sadly, the elf got in long before the goblins, so the bet was off, instead, we were now betting on a few other things.

1. amount of goblins to survive the traps.
2. amount of limbs taken off goblins.
3. elf tries to get out during attack or later.

Besides that, the duke told the elf to do whatever, and stopped paying attention after the elf mentioned 'trees' for the fifth time in a single sentence, the elf got pissed and started making his way for the exit
The traps jammed after the first group of goblins(Cut off limbs stuck in the mechanisms). The goblins that moved past the now jammed traps got shot and killed by marksdwarves until the rest decided to run. The elf walked out after the attack.

Trap details:
Limbs lost: 16
survivors:1

17 slate
A few small things, Beardy got another cat, a war dog died of old age, We're building more tombs for the dwarves, it's coming along nicely.Someone forgot to clean up goblin bits near the traps, making it stink really badly. An engraver claimed a crafting shop to make an artifact, and the child injured in the goblin attack will most likely never be able to get out of bed again, and we are getting migrants.

1 mason
5 recruits
1 squad leader: macedwarf recruit
1 hunter
1 guard
1 cook

And that was all, mostly useless dwarves which are now the recruits, refilling the hammersquad and making a new macesquad. I guess they might not be interested in living here because we don't have tombs for everyone, and we don't have normal living rooms for everyone either.

20 slate

Well, meet our new artifact, "Lïd ágesh", The Tightness of Contesting", a toy boat made of marble(Won't float, don't try it). A value of 108 000, it has iron, leather, marble and gem decorations, it has the image of a mountainrange engraved in rock, and the image of a goblin getting surrounded by dwarves in silk. Nice, it's going to the vault like all the other artifacts.

I've also made plans to turn the now slightly inefficient workshop area, build for ~50 dwarves into a residence area, but will first have to make a bigger, better, and more efficient area for the workers. We've also struck more copperore(With a hint of silver).

15 hematite

The elves didn't show this year, with the exception of the diplomat. No problem, not like they had anything we really use anyway, we can get the cloth off the humans which should be arriving soon. And just as I was writing this in the log, one of the military recruits reported a human diplomat coming close, with a caravan right behind him. Great, we had idle dwarves for the first time in years, lets trade. The diplomat left as soon as he arrived, he had nothing special to say. Trading with the humans was easy, and gave us some extra stuff, but nothing special.

28 hematite

A kobolt tried to sneak in, and just as the thing passed over the bridge, Chip came from the other side, sees the kobolt, seems to ignore it as he walks by, and then pushes it off the bridge to have it fall down and breaking it's legs in 6 places, and most of it's other bones. Military has been send to finish it off.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Leaders log, page 36, 27 malachite, year 243

It seems we have a new artifact. It was made by a mechanic, which did his secretive job well, judging from how nobody noticed he was working. The good news, it's an artifact, the bad news, it's a mechanism. "Gusgashthoth Uthmikkitas", Stokedauras the Shaken Tenderness. It has rock, cloth, bone and shell decorations, and engraved in some silk there is a picture of..A thong..Then an image of a goblin catching a crossbow bolt with his neck, and then a picture in gems of..Another thong, and then in shell, the picture of a tree.

..Slightly disappointing, but at least that thong is comfy, and this one is worth 51 600.

2 galena

While george Redshirt was near the magma pipe, trapping the place for fire snakes, a fire imp popped out of the magma, and started to attack him. He then shot it and claimed it as his kill, like a hunter does. I've heard fire imp fat burns though, so I'm not sure if I want him to bring it in for butchering.

11 galena

George Redshirt got suicidal. He went back to the magma to try to actively hunt fire imps. Instead, he got a fireball to the face, then had an imp come to him and bite off chunks. He died shortly after the 2 dwarves that were nearby looked at him, and then decided they wanted a drink. His corpse is burning, so thats only coming back as bones, and we're just going to have to see what happens to his clothes. This is the fourth Redshirt we lost I think. The imp was taken down shortly after he died. There is just one more imp hiding somewhere.
(Later added)
It seems only 2 pieces of clothing, both expensive silk, survived, all his weapons, fireproof steel, has also survived to be used by someone else.(Weapons and such can't get buried with dwarves, unless I specificly build a weapon stockpile in their tomb for it) Besides that though, George had a few coins stashed in his tomb.

16 limestone

Dwarven traders, here with the next load of bauxite, along with them was another liason, so we can order more for next year. Besides that, I'm going to get us some wood, metals, food, and other things they have. I'll write the results here.

(Later that day)

A few gems, a load of metal, and 4 bauxite rocks. Then we had a lot of wood, alcohol and some cows, then meat, fish, plants and cheeses, and finally a few pieces of steel armour for our soldiers, and all for a load of rocks and some goblin clothes. Oh, and while sparring, one of our new macedwarf recruits bled to death, he did not have a tomb, so all his stuff was claimed by a nearby guard. Also, 2 goblins tried to sneak past our new weapon traps, we now own around 8-12 little bits of goblin.

3 sandstone

Oops, I just heard we've been under attack by goblins for 2 days already from one of the herbalists that tried to get outside. It seems the goblins kept running into the weapon traps and 8 of them died doing that, one survived with wounds that will most likely kill him within the hour. I've ordered all dwarves to stay inside for now, as there may be more goblins outside.

7 sandstone

Burrito was just done cleaning the remains of the last goblins to die by the trap as he was interupted by a few other goblins rushing the entrance, triggering the trap, and splattering their blood and chunks everywhere. I've bought Burrito a drink for that, he's spend a few days cleaning there. One of the traps jammed, so I've called most of our military close range fighters to take out the few goblins that walked past that trap, just because they might all want a bit of action. The goblins were beating up a war dog when the military arrived. The dog didn't survive.

18 sandstone

No goblins since the last time they were here, guess they left, everybody can go outside again. I'll keep the military near the entrance just in case, those goblins are nasty savages. Besides that, a weaver/farmer is acting sneaky, We're getting another artifact soon. Also, I'm thinking about tossing a goblin into the magma pipe, but I'm thinking I'll just put it in there, and then wait for Kharak to get out of bed again so he can pull the lever, he's been in bed so long he's probably very bored.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Yeah, that was the last Redshirt. George seemed like he really, really wanted to die with the whole trying to hunt fire imps thing. It didn't help that the 2 nearby dwarves I've put in the military decided to go grab a drink before helping.

Leaders log, page 37, 23 sandstone, year 243

A new artifact, it's useless, but at least it's not a thong, meet "Nefekïshir", Fancyfrays, a cloth...head veil. It has 2 different kinds of stones for decoration, along with 2 kinds of leather. It's dyed red, and has cloth spikes out of it. Worth 14 900, not a lot, but it's worth much more then just the materials. Strangely, no images.

12 timber

We lost a clothier today, and I have no idea how, why, or where. I've heard he died, but I can't find the body, no blood, no weapons related to how he is claimed to have died, and no hostile animals in the area. Unfortunatly, the clothier was one that made an artifact, so he was extremely efficient, useful, and in general, just very rich. I really don't know what happened.

(I stopped playing after 2 more months of winter in which nothing happened and I got bored, so it's a miniupdate)

15 obsidian

Finaly, something happens, winter is boring without goblins. Whatever the case, a small artifact was made by a wood burner, so I'll just describe it. "Kironemgamesh", Holyrider. It's worth just 2400, and is a palm earring made from wood, with wood around it. Incredibly lightweight, but no decorations or images. Nothing else happened, the same old boring stuff of me work on the channels for the magma forges, and a few workshops being moved to more efficient places.

9 granite 244

Elves, I guess we could toss them some goblin clothes and take their stuff for it, it's not like they ever carry anything we can't get from other caravans. I've also noticed bloodsplatters and parts of goblin in the traps, apparently one of them tried to sneak in. And along with the elves, a diplomat again, only talking to the duke, and as the duke later told me, it was about the same as all the other times, an elf asking us to stop cutting trees. (The duke told him to get lost). A kobolt tried to sneak in, but was caught by Naera, and then beaten a few times till it died, breaking all it's bones in the slow, most likely painful process. Another was caught out by Oni, which had his axe ready for cutting trees. That kobolt didn't last past the first hit. And yet another was caught by a mechanic, and quickly beaten up. And the duchess had another baby, it's a boy.
I've also noticed today that 5 of our soldiers had braindamage, so they're now training for crossbows. I think something is a little bit wrong, seeing as nearly all our military has permanent damage to their nervous system. The only ones I found to not have that kind of damage are Sin and 2 of her squad, Kharak, and a hammerdwarf(And all of those that arrived as marksdwarf). I've also noticed the barracks are red with blood 90% of the time.

2 slate

Migrants, that's been a while ago, so lets see what we're getting.
"Glurki", a speardwarf, good that we're getting new recruits.
5 recruits
1 royal guard
1 guard
1 miner

Also arrived:
3 horses
1 cow
1 mule

After all the time we waited for new migrants, the only one that will actually work is a single miner. Well, could be worse, at least this way we've got replacements for the braindamaged soldiers. I guess if any more of them get hit on the head hard enough and often enough we could just pull them out of the military.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Leaders log, page 38, 8 slate, year 244

One of the more dangerous things will be happening soon, we are breaching the magma pipe for the first part of the magma channel, this is dangerous, not because of the magma pouring out, we can easily avoid that with skilled miners, but because of a hyperactive Fireman(Think overly large fire elemental that shoots large fireballs and burns away low quality armour and weapons) that hangs around near the area designated for digging. Such a creature is dangerous, and if it could find a way to get into the fort, the death toll will be huge, as we have no real way to combat fire. I've send Burrito, one of the best miners to breach the pipe. Beardy would have been a bad choice, since he has a lot of cats, and cats+fire=bad.

(Added later)

The fireman noticed, he came out along with the magma, at first it appeared as simply a flame sparking from the magma hitting a left behind sock, but it was soon standing next to Burrito, at the edge of a channel filled with boiling magma. After a few moments of fighting it got hit by Burrito's pick, having just enough force behind it to toss the creature back into the magma while Burrito escaped from it. I'll have the way it came in walled off, should any other dwarf go there they will almost certainly be burned to a crisp within moments. Now we just have to wait again, since we need bauxite to finish the last bits of the channel before we can turn on the pumps.

18 slate

The miners are all done, digging is a lot faster then actually getting to use what they dug out, so I've thought a while, and noticed that we have sedimentary ground and soil near the fort. Sedimentary layers hold exactly what we are lacking, iron ores, coal, bauxite, and the most valuable gems. I've designated a small area to be mined into, to see if we can find some, if we can find bauxite here, we won't have to rely on traders to bring it.

2 felsite

Results on the mining are in already, we've found platinium, the most valuable metal we can find in sedimentary layers, and magnetite, a kind of iron ore that comes in large clusters. We will have ore enough to last us several years with that, provided we find the bauxite needed for the magma channel. Besides that, we've found a hard, red stone, it's not the bauxite we were looking for, but we can now make red rock furniture if anybody would want to request that. Speaking of which, I've seen a large area right next to the old workshop area that would be just perfect for housing, and I'm thinking that's the best place to put private housing of the important dwarves, unless they feel like requesting a different area to live in.

9 hematite

Another large cluster of iron ore, but besides that, Kharak got out of bed, and went straight for the booze stockpiles. I've told him there's a surprise waiting for him in a room above the magma pipe, 2 goblins to toss into it, set ready for him to do. Besides that, I bet he would want some action in the now expanded arena. And also, Kharak has apparently been helping out one of his dogs while he was in bed, he has attained legendary animal caretaker status. And guess what the miners reported just as the last screams from burning goblins died out? We have bauxite.
Oh, and if anybody wants to toss a goblin in, we got plenty, so just pick one, flip the switch, and toss it in.

16 hematite

The human caravan is arriving, so lets just give them some more rocks and take some stuff. Besides that, as Neara was out gathering plants, she caught a goblin arrow, there were some goblins trying to ambush lone civilians outside. While she ran, and got away from the archers and weaponusing goblins, two goblin wrestlers followed her, and tried to attack her, in the end, she punched one of them hard enough to break it's spine before the other broke both her arms Sin arrived right after that to help, took out the wrestler, and finished the other, Neara and Sin walked back in on their own. On the way back in, Sin caught and killed a goblin thief trying to get in. So, all dwarves in, military at the ready,(not including the braindamaged, they still can't aim) and lets see what those goblins can do.
The traders got in already.

The surviving goblins, including 2 bowmen sat on a hill outside the area we dug for the bauxite, and they didn't seem like they wanted to move any time soon. Another squad went right for our entrance, but I've send Sin and her squad out to deal with them. The resulting fight was tense, with the axedwarves dodging arrows being shot at them from all directions without any injuries, working together so that one of them would flank the archers and kill them from behind. In the end, goblin bits everywhere, arrows stuck in the ground, and one of the better axedwarves got an arrow stock in his arm. Only one survivor on their side, a cowardly bowuser that ran. This was enough to have the group in the distance running as well. I've noticed Naera is staying near the entrance for some reason, even though she could just move.

Now, for revenge, Kharak is in the arena, and we have caged goblins. So, for starters, 4 goblin thieves, and OH SHIT IS THAT A TITAN? Meet Snospda Dabez Molngustrëk, titan, here to screw around with us, and we don't have cages ready because Kharak was in bed all year, so all the cages are full of goblins(And will not be reloaded in time anyway). Also, Sin's squad is resting in the barracks, it seems some of them got "Slight cuts" on a finger, so I've ordered all the braindamaged marksdwarves to stand near the entrance, and I hope they know which way to point the crossbows. Besides that, Naera is still near the entrance, doing nothing at all.

The thing aproaches, all military dwarves have assembled near the entrance(With the exception of Glurki, which tried to toss a goblin thief into the arena but got scared of the thing), 12 ranged fighters, 9 meelee warriors, and 10 war dogs. Kharak is standing at the front, and Naera still refuses to move. The thing moved to her donkey, grabbed it and tossed it against a wall, instantly killing it, this signaled the attack for our dwarves, which send roughly 50 crossbow bolts in it's direction within a few seconds. The fighters arrived, and started hitting the Titan, some moving past it to force it to turn every few seconds. After a few seconds the titan lost both eyes, a broken knee, and a large gaping hole in it's chest, showing it had 3 bolt stuck through it's heart, one of the lungs, and one more in the tissue. Seconds later it was dead, I don't know who dealt the last blow, but I will find out, at first I assumed Kharak finished it, but he claimed otherwise, saying it wasn't him that finish it off. It later turns out that the leader of the hammerdwarves dealt the last blow, it was her first kill too.
Naera crawled away.

Vote:
What to do with the hammerdwarf that killed the titan?
a. expanded tomb, free housing, high quality housing
b. A lot of time off, nothing else.
c. Nothing, it was not just the hammerdwarf, it was the entire military that did it.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Added in the fight I didn't do in the last post, it's an edit.

Also, if people could please post if they're still interested in this, that would be great, not really a point in doing this when there's no interest.

Besides that, I'm sorry to say there won't be a log today because my laptop gave me the blue screen everybody knows of windows.

Shit happens, I'll try again tonight, but that would be a much smaller log, which will be edited in here.

(On a crumpled note, between pages 38 and 39)

Well, they pulled me out of bed because "This could be important to the logs", so here you go
19 malachite

A jeweler got possesed, grabbed some stuff, and in the end, he made a bucket out of gems. So, meet "Tadmat Lular Dumat", matchbends the Rooter of Roughness. A bucket made out of opals, worth 76 800, it has rings of leather, and a shiny, purple metal image on it, the picture of an alligator.

Now, back to bed, and don't wake me for anything less then a lava flood..Come to think of it, why not, we have the magma, we have power, lets make a way to flood the outdoors with the stuff.

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Leaders log, page 39, 4 galena, year 244

Time to get Kharak some of those goblins, it's been a while, so starting slowly

Kharak: 1

Goblins: 0

And then we had to unfortunatly stop the fights because Kharak decided he wanted some food. Oh, and the part about him falling off the raised arena area is a part of why too.
I'm worried about Naera, she has been laying near the entrance for a while now, and is refusing to come in. She can just walk, her legs are fine, but she just doesn't go in, I don't know what the problem is. She claims there's no pain either, and the other dwarves aren't trying to give her water or food.

18 galena

Naera got pissed off, and started shouting at the random dwarves that passed by her while she laid there, wounded, starving, and dehydrated. The dwarves did like they did before, simply ignoring her and walking on. Nobody is even thinking about helping her, or the axedwarf that is still in the field with the same condition. Shortly after calming down(And meeting an uninvited guest while angry), she fell asleep, without waking up. RIP Naera, at least your tomb was all done before this all.
We captured a random goblin that was near when she died, it seemed her final action was to hit the thing on it's legs, causing it to run right into a cagetrap.

22 galena

The axedwarf died as well, one of the best of Sin's squad, and one of the few in the military without braindamage. Sin has been in bed, recovering from a nasty wound, and I can think of 2 reasons the axedwarf and Naera died.. 1. Nobody cared, and left them out to die.
2. The braindamaged dwarves were tasked with bringing them in, but they got distracted by their own armour being shiny.

This means nothing though, as the dead bodies were moved to their tombs within a day, so obviously they knew there were dwarves out there. I've talked to Bagash, and he has started an investigation with the guards, if I find who is responsible for the death of 2 dwarves (s)he's getting a choice, swim in the magma pipe or wake up in a room with Slusa(Or 5 goblins of choice).

(And the log ends here for today because I'm getting a headache, and nothing was happening, I'll try again tonight.)

Re: Logs of the fortress manager

Leaders log, page 39 continued

18 limestone

The dwarven carvan arrived just in time to say hi to the goblin ambush. The trade leader got shot in the arm, but he escaped. One of the cats outside was not so lucky. Some braindead dwarves ran out, drooling, with a crossbow, they shot a few goblins, but in the end, one died, and I have no idea where the others went. The caravan lost a wagon, and turned around, no trade this year.

After that, all of the braindamaged dwarves(And Glurki) went out to try to loot whatever they could find. Luckily, the goblins have poor aim, and I told them that whoever would go outside gets locked outside, so most of them turned around, complaining about all the loot still outside. One guard decided to bumrush a group of goblin archers. He caught a lot of arrows before getting killed.

The rest went inside, stayed inside, and watched the traps make goblins into smaller pieces. After that, the other dwarves decided it was looting time, and they went out to loot the remains, even though there were more goblins coming. An engineer died like this, and the baby she was carrying got shot too. None of the military even bothered showing up now, so the entire fortress defence came down to one line of traps. Luckily, goblins are idiots, and they ran into the traps one at a time, and all died. One of the other children from the engineer ran out to cry over the dead body, and was quickly snatched by a goblin. A nearby dwarf noticed, ran after the goblin, tore off one of it's arms and started beating the thing to death with it.
The kid was injured badly, but will probably be fine if they bother to bring it in.

14 sandstone

Just the last few bits left for the magma channel, a few mechanisms and we're done. We need 5 more anvils though, to make more forges, but thats a concern for later. Meanwhile, another axedwarf died in a sparring incident. And besides that, the expanded tomb and free high quality housing is done for our titanslayer.

26 sandstone

Migrants!
We're getting new recruits and workers, which is good, since we have alot of work that's still not done.

1 swordsdwarf, leader of a new swordsdwarf squad.(By himself for now)
1 marksdwarf, leader of whatever dwarves end up braindead in the next year.
2 recruits, both new axedwarves
1 crafter
1 miner
1 hunter
1 guard

Also arrived
1 donkey

A small migration, but it's something at least. While out, I've noticed the immediate surroundings of our fort might not give the best impression. Namely, we have 2 roads going out, one is a neat, paved road I personally designed, and the other is a trail of vomit leading up the mountain to the last battlefield. I hope it rains soon.
