Re: Lost in the Jungle

Niet. We dominate the army in true evil overlord fashion, and then clog the inevitable traps with our minions.

Then they'll be dead, and we'll have our swag!

I mean, how are we going to rule the universe with this weird macguffin thing if we don't even have an army when we get there?
Most the army died trying the conquer the jungle town. There are a few sentients kinda near to us in the jungle, but really, it'd just be a massive drag going round to recruit them and convince them to come with us.

Anyway, vote B3, with no goddamn venom sucking, wins! ;)

-----

"Hold on," Eve whispers to Formora, who was sitting up awkwardly against a vertebra. "We can still fix this. There's still a chance."

Reaching deep inside herself for the mental switch, Eve channeled her magic, forcing it out through both hands directly above Formora's wound. She pumped everything into it - heart, mind, and soul, all merging together to create an almighty Healing Pulse III spell. At the height of her concentration, she cried out:

"WAíSE HEILL!"

A blast of green magic burst from her palms, shot into Formora, and spread over her entire body in less than a second.

Formora collapsed to the ground.

For a second, Eve felt physically sick from her overusage of magic - only feeble dregs remained of her once mighty reserve. But there more pressing concerns.
"Fomora?" she called. "FORMORA!"

Formora lay on her side, unmoving. Tears blurring her eyes, Eve bent forward, pressing her fingers against Formora's neck - but she felt no pulse except her own, elevated and frantic. Eve glanced down at Formora's pale, still face, and even through her veil of tears, she could see that her eyes were blank and staring.

Eve picked up Formora's body off the white, bone-covered ground and hugged it close, tears leaking into her hair.

For an hour Eve sat there clutching her fallen friend. Sobs wracked her body the entire time. During this period she was totally blind to the world, and would've been easy prey for any passing creature - but thankfully, she was left to grieve unmolested.

Some time later, Eve came to her senses. Laying Formora down on the smoothest, largest patch of bone she could find, she reached inside herself for the Flexible Shadow spell. This cost no magical energy, and it was only a gesture, but Eve felt the tiniest spark of consolation as a small patch of her shadow severed cleanly away from the rest. It then spread out, like a drop of paint in a pool of water, forming a large, round oval. Pausing, it fluttered up off the ground and into the air (a very strange sight) and settled over Formora's body like a shroud. It wasn't protection, Eve thought sadly, but it was the best she could do for her fallen friend.

After a brief internal debate - would it be disrespectful, or would she admire our practicality? - Eve took Formora's Bow and quiver of arrows. One never knew when they would come in handy. This took the weight on her back up to quite alarming levels, but as long as she wasn't called upon roll freely or sprint flat out, Eve knew she'd be fine.

Saddened and completely alone in the world, Eve set off for the Temple of Knowledge.

When she arrived there - she lost track of how long the walk took some hours ago - Eve had to stop for a second just to admire the place. The black stone of the lowest layer almost shone, had no visible joins or connections, and was completely unblemished. It seemed innocent, but a faint instinctive voice at the back of her head told Eve she might be better off not touching it...
Luckily the way in was obvious. A gigantic, vertical rectangle was cut in the bottom layer, with the bones stopping smoothly in front of it. Inside... was darkness.

Looking braver than she felt, Eve ventured inside.

On her second step over the threshold, something shifted under Eve's foot - and a wall of stone came crashing down over the entrance behind her.
"NO!" Eve cried, whirling around - but it was already too late. The way in (and out) was sealed.

Before total panic could set in, however, a light flared on the wall opposite where the entrance had been. Creeping over stealthily, wary of any more traps, Eve investigated - and saw an old man sitting in a wooden chair, below a flicking, flaming torch. To his right was an archway - beyond that, just more darkness.

"Soo... the traveler makes it here at last, does she?" The man looked ancient, and his voice reflected that - by turns croaking, faint and whispery, like old pages of parchment being slowly and carefully turned.

"Allow me to explain the Temple to you. There are seven layers - seven is a remarkable number, don't you think? They alternate between dark and light, to challenge both sides of the soul. Each layer varies in size - the multidimensional mechanics of this place are slightly wonky - but each contains at least one deadly danger. Some are more obvious than others.

If you make it through a layer, there will be steps up to the next one. The stairways are safe places, and no danger will befall you in them.

Reach the top of the tower... and, well, there is a choice. A simple choice.

The Temple of Knowledge is merciful. You may die three times within its walls; if you do, each time you will be reanimated at the start of the floor you were on. Die a fourth time, and you will be left to rot for all of eternity... which, trust me, is a very long time.
"

He started to chuckle quietly, although it soon turned into a deep, wracking cough. Eventually he regained his composure.

"Sooo... any questions?"

*

Satisfied, Eve turns away, moving through the archway - clearly the entrance to the ground layer. She steps through - and again, it seals shut behind her, although this time it is a layer of magical energy that blocks the way.

More fire torches inside the room burst into flame, revealing Eve to be standing on a small, stone platform, surrounded to the front and sides by... swamp. The entire room - and it's pretty huge, about the size of a football field - is partially submerged. Here and there lillypads float, and bullrushes poke above the surface of the water.
On the right hand side of the room (from her perspective) is a small, blue, glowing vial - a magical energy recovery potion if ever Eve's seen one! It sits on a small stone podium of its own. On the left side of the room is a similar vial, glowing green - a health recovery potion. Also nice.

Not so nice... are the zombies. Zombies everywhere. Men and women, big and small, some old with rotten, ragged clothes and other in surprisingly fresh condition. Their low moans fill the entire room, the splashes of water as they make as they move around randomly, waist deep in the water, the only other noise.

Eve sits down and thinks. This is a tricky one.

----

Please pick an option from each set.

Option A) Go for the Health Recovery Potion.
Option B) Go for the MP Recovery Potion.
Option C) Go for both of 'em.
Option D) Go for neither of them.

Option E) Snipe the zombies with the arrows. They're slow moving, easy targets, but the only concerns are running out of arrows, and drawing them over with the twang sound of the Bow.

Option F) Sneak as stealthily as possible through the swamp to the other side.

Option G) Fight our way through the swamp, using our trusty old sword. They have numbers, but they can (probably) be decapitated easily.

Option H) Other.

* Did you have any questions for the 'man' in the Entrance Hall? Ask them now, and Eve will ask them retroactively.

Re: Lost in the Jungle

Forgot to mention, you got seriously unlucky with that spell. I decided the Level III Healing Spell had a 4/6 chance of working (as in, if I rolled a 3, 4, 5, or 6 on a 6-sided dice), Formora would live.

I rolled a 2. :(

/cry

Looks like MrMe had the right idea all along.

Hmm time for some zombie survival tactics!

H., which is a mix of C and F.
Using a small length of rope tie a few arrows together, maybe three no more than 5. Then toss them out into the water as far as possible away from the direction we are heading, in this case first the mana potion. If the auditory distraction worked and we can sneak by them easily try it again for the health one, then again for the exit. If we can throw the first towards the health potion then when we throw the second we might be able to recover those arrows, but im not pushing that point.

As for the tied together part, either each arrow end to end with a bit of rope in between so we can try for 3 separate plops into the water, or bundle them for a louder plop. Whichever one you think would work better.

While I am deeply saddened by the loss of our dark elf friend, I will direct my boos towards the dice/random number generator gods as they are the true villains here.

B (like some already said, greed is a bad thing) F Instead of tying arrows together and throwing them away, I suggest using the rubber ball in our inventory for the same purpose. We take it and throw it in the opposite direction we want to go. It will most likely go farther than throwing arrows would, and will hopefully better serve as a distraction.

No questions for the old guy.

Thank you.

Anyway, moving on, Options B and F each one the most votes in their category! (With various 'on the basis that' comments that I'll try and work into the narrative).

-----

Eve decides that, though both potions are appealing, the magic-restoring one is vital - she's running almost on empty at the minute, and that could be perilous when coming up against... god only knows what other hazards in the Temple.

So. Just the magic potion it is. Getting to it - and then to the other side of the room - still looks tricky...

After considering several ideas, Eve concludes that stealth is the best approach. There's too many to consider fighting, really.
Thinking quickly, Eve takes a 10m length of rope out of her bag, cuts it off smoothly with the edge of her sword, and ties a clump of 4 arrows (two of each kind together). Then, standing up straight and whirling the clump above her head like a lasso, she tosses it at the side of the room holding the health recovering potion. It clatters satisfying onto the stone podium, drawing the attention of all the zombies in the room. They stagger slowly over towards the source of noise, moaning and stumbling the whole way. Seizing her opportunity, Eve silently pulls the arrows back through the air towards her, then slides into the water.

She very nearly gasps out loud - it's bone-chillingly cold, and instantly seeps a good way up her dress. Moving forwards, trying to disturb the water as little as possible, she notes that it comes up to just above her belly-button. Ew. God knows what's floating in a swamp this stagnant.

Eve makes good time through the first section of the Swamp, making into to the magic recovery potion in a matter of minutes. Just as well, because the coolness of the water doesn't seem to abate - if anything, it feels colder than when she got in.
Climbing up onto the podium as quietly as possible, she grabs the potion, uncorks it, and swallows it all down in two quick gulps.
It's good stuff - it spreads through her body like a fire, burning away the numbness the water left in her legs. Feeling hugely revitalized, Eve considers her next step.

The zombies have drifted away from the other platform by now, and seem to be spreading out almost randomly through the swamp.

She raises her lasso again, whirling it above her head - only to feel a cold, bony hand grab onto her ankle! This time she really does gasp aloud, and with a sharp tug Eve's pulled backwards off the platform and into the water. She lands with a huge splash, water fanning out in all directions, some it even covering the nearest wall. Underwater, bubbles spraying everwhere and her hair in her eyes, instincts kick in, and Eve kicks out, sharply. By some divine intervention, her foot connects with what feels like a head, and the hand on her ankle releases its grip.

Standing up, water streaming off her body, Eve notices what she didn't see before - a zombie, chained up underwater (of course, they don't need to breathe) behind the stone platform. Completely invisible from the way she approached it - which was, presumably, the whole point.

Ah. Shit. The zombies. They've all turned, looking blankly in her direction. Then, at some unknown signal, they move as one through the water, with alarming speed. All of them converging on her.

-----

Option A) Make a dash for the exit. It's only 25m or so behind you, and once your on the staircase, they're powerless.

Option B) Try the trick with the arrows and lasso again, and try to stealth our way out of this.
B1) Try and fashion a new lasso and clump of arrows before the horde arrives.
B2) Retrieve our old lasso. It's floating in the water, about 5 metres in the wrong direction.

Option C) Stand and fight! We're all magic'd up, great with a sword... we can take them.

C. I opt for standing on the pedastle, out of the water, and frying the bejeezus out of them with a lightning attack. I don't think we would be able to make it 25m through waist deep water before the zombies can get to us...

BTW: is there a handy dandy list of which spells we can use? maybe keep an updated list in the intro post or something, just so I can be more specific than 'lightning attack'

Re: Lost in the Jungle

I'll have to go with A. While we have mana now, we might need it on the second floor. Besides, they look like slow(er) zombies, so if we keep aware of any more chained zombies, we should be alright. Just zap any said chained zombies if they grab us.
