The octopus continues to observe the pair. After a moment, Tamara gestures Jessica to continue swimming despite it.

Jessica sees that the octopus seems to be content to just watch them, and when Tamara motions to her to start swimming on despite it she agreed with the decision. The mermaid flicked her tail slowly and smoothly, beginning to swim off in the direction they had been going, looking back towards Tamara and the octopus to see if it would follow them.

Tamar follows Jessica rather closely when she starts swimming, and when she turns to look Jessica sees that the octopus is trying to follow them as well, although it can't quite keep up.

Jessica saw that the octopus was continuing to follow them, but only slowly, and they would soon swim too far for it to keep up. She almost wanted to slow down to let the curious creature follow them, but she knew Tamara was working on a limited time allotment thanks to the scuba tank, and though it was a long one, she still didn't want to possibly run up against it, so she swam as fast as the ottergirl could manage to keep pace with towards the sunken city.

The curious octopus inevitably falls behind as Jessica and Tamara continue forward - and downward. A school of fish passes between them and the surface, making everything darker for a moment, though the water is getting darker anyway as they get deeper. Eventually Tamara turns on the light, not that there's much to see except the oceanfloor with its curious hills and valleys and mountains that are almost islands.

Eventually, Jessica sees lights ahead, coming from behind a conveniently placed hill blocking their view.

Jessica actually turned and waved goodbye to the octopus as it fell behind for good, and then quickly continued onward and downward, into the depths of the ocean. A large school of fish passed over them at one point, blotting out the sun instantly and completely, making the mermaid shudder a little bit in the darkness. Even after they were past, it was getting quite dark as they journeyed on, until finally Tamara turned on her little headlamp. It didn't penetrate terribly far into the blackness, though it did reveal that they had almost reached the sea floor. It was more or less empty, with little valleys that seemed to go down a long way further from time to time, and sometimes little mountains that almost reached the surface... Finally the nerdy girl saw a ring of light over a hill ahead of them, which could have come from only one source. "Almost there" she said somewhat enthusiastically, eager to see the city for the first time.

As Jessica and Tamara pass the peak of the hill, they're greeted with a sight of an enormous crystal dome that has been shattered as if by a huge explosion from outside. There's a number of merpeople and octopi near the dome and around it, wandering about. There's also a crane of some sort, apparently trying to lift pieces of the dome. The crystal is glowing with blue light. There are a number of smaller domes like it around, some of them intact but most broken also.

Jessica crested the hill soon after that, only to see something quite a bit less magnificent than she was expecting. There was a massive crystal dome in the center, which would have been quite beautiful if most of it hadn’t been shattered. There was a ton of merfolk and octopi swimming around the broken dome, a strange sort of crane trying to lift the various pieces of it as the crystal glowed blue. There were similar but smaller domes arrayed all around the larger one, but most of them were broken in a similar way. "I wonder what happened here" the nerdy mermaid wondered aloud as she began to swim towards the crowd of merfolk and octopi, wanting to find one of them to talk to.

Some of the people down there notice Jessica and Tamara, and two mermen start swimming towards them. One of them calls out in the same incomprehensible language Mierin used, and it's hard to tell whether it's a greeting or an order to stop.

It isn't long before a few mermen noticed Jessica and Tamara, and they began to swim towards the two. One of them called out towards the group in the same language that Mierin had used, and though she had been able to understand the new language earlier, they were too far away, and she couldn't interpret it. Was it a greeting? Was it instead a command to stop in place? Either way she waved in acknowledgement and stopped, motioning for Tamara to do the same.

As the merman swims closer, her repeats his words, more slowly. Though the speech sound heavily accented and slurred, Jessica manages make the words out: "Hello friends. What brings you here?"

Jessica strained to listen as the merman approached, repeating his words more slowly. It sounds like he's slurring his speech, and the accent is very thick, but with some effort she can make out that he's greeting them. "Hello" she replied in that same language, the word coming strangely easy to her after her transformation, "I'm... I was transformed into a mermaid not long ago. I'm looking for a way to become human again, and I've been led here by a glowing light. That taught me your language too." It seemed almost forward to put it that way, but she couldn't think how else to answer.

The man looks stunned. "What? A glowing light? Where this was, and how did it transform you?"

"It was in a labyrinth of ruins over that way" Jessica replied, pointing where she meant, "but the light didn't transform me. I lost a fight against some zombies and lost consciousness, and when I woke up I was a mermaid." It seemed like a far-fetched idea, really, and she had absolutely no idea how she could have been transformed. "I met one of your kind before that, frozen in a block of ice. Mierin was her name."

"That sounds like... Follow me, please." The merman abruptly turns and leads Jessica past the ruins. Short ways behind them is a small reef, full of life, and above it a lonely mermaid is floating around, looking melancholic, until her eyes widen in surprise as she sees Jessica; it is none other than Mierin. "Jessica! What happened to you?" Unlike the others, Mierin's speech is easy to understand.

When told to follow the merman, Jessica quickly did so, hoping that he had some kind of lead. A short distance behind the ruins there was a small, colorful reef that was teeming with life, and floating above it was a pretty lonely looking mermaid. The nerdy girl squinted a little bit, staring... it took her a little while to realize that it was Mierin she was looking at. The mermaid seemed quite surprised, looking at her with wide eyes and asking what had happened to her. Unlike the others, her speech was quite easy to understand, and Jessica quickly replied "I don't know! I lost a fight with some zombies, and I woke up like this."

"Oh. I'm amazed that thing still works after all these centuries. The people living on that island had a spell on the surrounding waters that turns anyone drowning into a mermaid. Although, it's supposed to be temporary. Something must've gone wrong with it." Mierin looks thoughtful as she recounts these things, as if struggling to recall them. "I... don't know if I can help. I was imprisoned in that ice for centuries, and my powers haven't returned to me yet."

Jessica listened quietly to what Mierin said, taking it all in. "Well, that’s good I guess" she replied slowly once the other mermaid was done speaking, "otherwise I would be dead. But, hmm… I also touched a ball of light that led me to this place. Could that have had something to do with why I haven’t turned back?" It was certainly possible that that had been a completely different spell that had somehow altered the original one, or at least the nerdy girl thought so.

Mierin frowns. "I think it might. It must be something that was made after I got trapped."

As the two speak, Tamara fidgets, looking uncomfortable as she looks around.

Jessica nodded quietly, frowning. She didn't really know what to make of this, and didn't know how she would go about trying to become human again. Of course, then she noticed that Tamara was fidgeting around pretty uncomfortably, and started talking to Mierin again. "Is there anywhere that would have pockets of air for my friend to breathe and speak in? She can't understand us when we're talking like this, and I think it's worrying her."
