Deidre's struggles soon prove futile and she blindly throws raw magical energy at the spider, managing to hurt it and push it away even as it tries to cocoon her more completely, but the webs hit Deidre's already bound arm, restraining her no further. Willow quickly fires two bursts at the other remaining spider, managing to bring it down.

"Right! Give it everything you got, Deer! We're gonna blast our way outta this!" the fed-up mage said, abandoning her undeveloped magical talent for the moment and relying on her assault rifle. She needed to take this spider down, find the nearest escape tunnel, and toss a frag grenade behind them before this whole cavernous network was annihilated from space.

Willow's and Deidre's combined bursts quickly bring the remaining spider down and they quickly pull themselves off of the webs, leaving them free to grab the girl. The girl's body is still radiating warmth, and without a light it's hard to tell whether she's alive or not, but she doesn't seem to be moving. Deidre's helmet informs her that they have scarcely 6 minutes left.

Hefting the girl up onto her shoulders in a fireman's carry, Deidre made straight away for the exit, grabbing her spare grenade and handing it to Willow with her free hand.

"If we need to blast our way out, you be ready. I'll carry the girl. Let's move!"

The girl doesn't respond as Deidre pulls her over her shoulders and Willow leads the way towards the exit where they came from.

The pair quickly makes their way to the exit, only for it to be blocked by a fairly small tentacle bear. Willow quickly throws the grenade towards the bear, and the explosion causes it to stumble as the iron fragments tear numerous wounds to its flesh, but it's still standing and roaring menacingly. Willow quickly readies her shoulder-mounted rocket, preparing to fire.

Taking cover with the slumped over girl, Deidre cleared out of the way to give Willow an open line of fire to the alien bear. She didn't have time to check if the girl she had worked to save was still alive, she simply had to hope that she was and examine her later, once she and Willow were out of the hive and away from the artillery shelling.

The minirocket shoots off, missing the bear's body by inches, hitting its leg instead, tearing the poor animal's leg off. Its tentacles shoot towards Willow, flailing weakly as the soldier quickly backs out of the reach and carefully puts the bear out of its misery with a single blaster shot. Willow quickly starts running out of the nest and towards the jungle, not stopping for several minutes as the pair quickly puts distance between them and the nest, luckily avoiding any further encounters until finally the nest is obliterated with an impressive and deafening lightshow as several bombs hit it and go off, effectively destroying the entire nest with minimum damage to the environment.

When Deidre was finally far enough away from the nest and had seen it blasted to smithereens by the mercenary company's artillery fire, she turned her attention to the girl she had risked her life and Willow's as well to rescue. She hoped it hadn't been all for naught. The grenade that Willow had initially thrown hadn't been directed at the enemy combatant carrying her, so there was a decent chance she had survived that blast - after all the one carrying her had survived it easily enough.

She took the girl's pulse, as well as taking vital signs with her field scanner. If there was a sign of life, she'd signal over the radio for medical evac.

The girl's pulse is weak and too fast, but at least she's alive. Deidre can see multiple puncturing wounds that have bled, some no doubt from spider bites, but others apparently from Willow's frag grenade. Deidre can hear the sergeant already requesting a vehicle for evacuation, and Willow is looking at the girl with worried expression, her own scanner no doubt relaying the information of her condition like Deidre's does.

"It's okay, Willow, she's alive. That's more than we could say if we'd left her in there with them," Deidre said, nodding to the smoldering ruins of the hive. "We're going to get her to the medbay. She'll be fine once we get her there."

In the meantime, it was all Deidre could do to simply apply field bandages to keep pressure on the wounds as best she could.

"I hope so." Willow kneels and helps Deidre as much as she can, but much of the damage is internal, so there's not much to be done. Several long minutes later, a small hovercraft arrives with the company doctor on board. "Alright, you two. Get her in."

Working together, Deidre and Willow lifted the injured girl onto the hovercraft and sat next to her, or as close as they could be to her without getting in the medical staff's way. When the doors were closed and the hovercraft had lifted off, Deidre took off her battle helmet and shook out her long silvery hair, which had lost its luster during the heat of battle, the sweat-dampened locks adhering her flushed cheeks and the neck lining of her battle armor.

Still, Deidre remained as composed as she could be. Her eyes focused on the pale face of the injured girl, and her mental powers focused on sensing the girl's life force. It was a practice the shamans of her original world had taught her long before the government had stolen her away to train her powers for combat and espionage. Everyone's life force was unique, but it glowed around them like an aura that could be read if one knew how to look for it.

The doctor quickly lays the girl down on a bed and hooks her up to IV and another machine Deidre doesn't recognize, covering her head, but he doesn't look too hopeful as the rest of the squad gets in and the hovercraft takes off. The girl's aura is what one would describe as blue-green of shallow ocean if colors could adequately describe such things, but now most of it is covered in patches of black and sickly yellow of diseased flesh. The aura seems to be weakening by the moment, and Deidre can see that but for the treatment, the girl is minutes from death.

Deidre frowned. This was cutting it close. The girl was barely hanging on as it was, but she didn't know enough about healing to help the doctor in anyway, she could only wait for a result. So she would wait patiently as the evac hovercraft raced towards the flag ship. If there was anything Deidre could do to save the girl, she would do it, but she didn't know how.

For a moment the girl's aura stabilizes, before the patches melt away, leaving an aura of pure blue that slowly fades away, leaving only a ghost of it as the machine covering her head starts quickly cooling it down to prevent further damage to the brain already starving for oxygen. The man frowns and mutters something to himself, not quite loud enough to be overheard.

Several minutes later the hovercraft lands and the corporal and rest of the squad hops out as the doctor takes the patient and the portable bed with him. The captain approaches the squad, and the corporal commands attention.

Deidre stood at attention, leaving the girl in the hands of the doctors and of the gods. She waited for the captain to approach and give his debriefing. She was prepared for an officer chewing her out for her impromptu rescue attempt, but frankly if this mercenary outfit viewed personal initiative in a soldier as a bad thing, then she might as well have stayed with the government goons who had stolen her away from her tribe. Even if the girl did end up dying, Deidre didn't regret for a second what she had done.

Her jaw set and her eyes were riveted on the wall opposite where she stood, mentally digging in her hooves.

The captain looks strict as he circles the team, inspecting them closely. Finally he issues a short command "At ease" upon which everyone spreads their legs a foot apart and walks to look Deidre directly into eyes. "Private, enlighten me. What the fuck were you thinking when you rushed into a deathtrap like that?" Though the words are harsh, they're delivered in a calm manner, and Deidre can see just a glimpse of amusement in the officer.

"I was thinking there was a civilian I could save, sir," Deidre replied, looking straight ahead, and answering in a firm voice, with all the conviction she could muster. There really wasn't much else to the story. In the heat of the situation, watching that woman getting carted off into that nest, knowing that it was about to be blown to kingdom come, Deidre knew that to stand down and do nothing was to condemn her to certain death.

As things were, she still might not survive, but at least she had a chance to fight for life now, with a medical staff helping her out in the surgery. It was all Deidre could have done. Maybe if more of the soldiers had gone in like she had, things would have gone easier, but Deidre wasn't a ranked officer, she couldn't make calls like that. She'd bent the rules by herself, and if anything, the only bad thing she had done was to allow Willow to risk her life as well on the same mission. But Willow had made her own decision to follow her, and truth be told, Deidre had needed her desperately.

She waited for the captain to make clear what exactly he thought of her actions. She'd deal with the repercussions whatever they might be.

The captain waits for a moment to see if Deidre has more to say. When she doesn't, he turns his back to her and takes a few steps away. "Well, if she lives, you might get a small bonus. Don't make a habit out of stunts like that. Saving civilians is good, risking your life unnecessarily isn't. Dismissed."

As the captain walks away, the squad relaxes and the corporal steps in. "You heard the captain. It's lunchtime soon, and I expect everyone's equipment to be spotless before they eat. Get on with it."

Deidre saluted and then headed back to the barracks, where she set about getting her gear cleaned to regulation standard. That she hadn't been punished for her reckless stunt was a relief, and her hands were still shaking from the pent up adrenaline. The tension washed away from her body in waves, and by the time her suit was cleaned, she had reclaimed her calm and centered herself spiritually.

She stripped out of her combat undergarments and tossed them in a hamper, before stepping into her private shower. She turned on the water and doused herself. She liked her water hot, and soon steam was creeping across the upper half of her bathroom mirror. She soaped herself off and then took the shower nozzle and rinsed briskly. She kept her silver hair up, since there wasn't enough time to wash and dry all that hair before lunch. She'd get to it afterwards.

She stepped from the shower and toweled herself off, then headed to her drawers and selected a fresh ship uniform, donning herself in the black, silver, and red outfit. Finally refreshed and satisfied, she exited her room and headed towards the mess hall.
