Re: ranger Test Thread

"Follow! Use your nose!" she said while hurriedly examining the moldy grain. That would need to be examined and possibly destroyed, but hopefully the rest of it was alright. She hurriedly passed a hand over her mouth and enacted a minor wind charm, hopefully protecting her from any potentially toxic spores coming from the mold.

(Harsh Winds, wind level 2.)

Re: ranger Test Thread

Following her spirit cat up the stairs Revalli was treated to the same sight of the rapidly evaporating foot prints. The air up here was friged as well a clear oddity to the ground floor which while cool was not cold. With her breath steaming the air and her spirit cat sniffing the fadding foot prints it seemed that the quarry they sought was not here. But where could it go? The lift for the grain was as still as when she saw it below and besides the stairs and a still intact window there where no other means to escape. Feeling the hairs of her neck Revalli turned to see a faint shape of a girl pass by her and sit on the moldy sacks. Once more the sobbing began.

Re: ranger Test Thread

Well. That must be the spirit. Letting out a sigh that was visible before her in the cold atmosphere, Revalli tightened her hands into fists in nervousness, but in this situation at least she was not afraid. Spirits of the immaterial were often powerless in the real world, and so long as she kept calm she wouldn't cause herself any harm. "Why do you linger, spirit?" Revalli demanded calmly as she faced the thin outline of the spirit sitting on the sacks, "what draws you to this place, and why do you appear to me?" She boldly took a step toward it, but only one, and though the upper floor was cold she could feel herself starting to sweat nervously.

Re: ranger Test Thread

The spirit woman cried some more her spectral manifestation rocking backi and fourth. Watching the girl Revalli saw the moldy sacks of grain dampen again. "They left me here all alone. Its so cold why am I so cold. Mommy Daddy come home." The girl cried some more as he form rocked back and fourth.

Re: ranger Test Thread

Of course. It wasn't a hostile spirit, but a mournful one, as made sense given that it was the ghost of a frightened girl. Revalli wished that she had asked what her name was, or who had lived here before, but she doubted that the cowardly man who had foisted the responsibility on her would have even known. While she knew enough about spirits to exist, however, Revalli had no idea how to be rid of one other than to trap it, and she lacked the resources for that right now. Instead, she opted to do something she had heard might work from a somewhat dubious book, and try to shock the ghost into realizing that it was dead with simple bluntness.

"Your mother and father aren't coming back," she said in a raised voice, trying to catch the unfortunate spirit's attention. It was powerful enough to manifest and to affect the physical world, but she wasn't sure how powerful, meaning that this might be dangerous, but Revalli didn't see any other option. "You're dead! The chill you feel is that of death come to claim you! Go with it! Go and find your rest, spirit, and be away from here!"

Re: ranger Test Thread

The girl sniffled as she looked up at Revalli. "Who are you? Your not supposed to be here." The girl took on a angry face. "Your just like dirty old Jansen telling me lies and watching me. GET OUT!" Revalli felt the winds pick up slamming the window open and disturbing the rope for the lift. Her spirit cat growled at the less than leathal assult and her own protections shielded her greatly from windly assult. However the noticible dip in tempature was not something Revalli had planned on. Already cold up here she could see frost spreading from the now standing spirit who had paled noticibly her lips turning blue like someone who had fallen into icy water and drowned. "YOUR NOT WELCOME HERE GET OUT!" Another blast of air whipped past Revalli only this time it had a cuttiing cold to it. Still unharmed the spirit screamed again. "I WON"T LET YOU HURT ME LIKE HE DID!" Revalli could feel a build up of energy something was about to happen.

Re: ranger Test Thread

Revalli opened her mouth to answer only to shut it again as she raised an arm to shield her eyes from the sudden gusts of wind that started to disturb the mill's air. "You are dead!" Revalli spat, speaking over the spirit's increasingly enraged commands. This wasn't good. Perhaps unsurprisingly, her words had only angered the ghost, and the chill in the air suggested that it was a good deal more powerful than she had originally thought.

For the first time she wished that she had followed more closely in the footsteps of her parents. In this situation her mother could have easily quelled the ghost's power, dispelling the wind and the cold and preventing it from enacting any further influence until its energies were spent. Her father, somewhat more direct, would have either bound it as a servant by sheer will or simply obliterated it with a shard of raw chaos. Her own magics were more basic and worldly, her favored elements being mostly primal and thus less effective against less substantial foes. Not completely ineffective, however.

Even if they used flame or ice, her powers would still affect the spirit's manifestation. Even purely physical strikes ought to, though Revalli wasn't about to try and test that. Instead, she took a step closer to the raging spirit despite the wind and shouted; "Begone spirit! Your time here is over! Let go what holds you here!" Thinking quickly, Revalli tried to figure out what would work to calm the ghost. "Think!" she demanded, "since when could you do this! Since when did you command the elements! Not in life, only in death!"

Aiming to protect herself, Revalli called upon the vital flames of life, aiming to shroud herself in a field of warming white fire that ought to offer her some protection from the ghost's magic.

Fiery Protection, Fire level 3 spell.

Re: ranger Test Thread

As Revalli's flameing protection burst into life something seemed to change in the ghost. Anger quickly turned to fear as the fire sparked. "Fire in the mill!" The winds and cold ended almost immidiatly as the girl turned tail and ran down the stairs. "Papa! FIRE!" Each step caused the girl to fade away leaving the air still chilled. After a moment Revalli didn't hear the girl anymore but the heavy spiritual presense still seemed to linger. She wasn't gone but at lest she was no longer a danger to Revalli.

"Dammit!" Revalli swore as the ghost faded, and despite her annoyance she couldn't help but wonder just what the hell was going on. Once the current manifestation of the ghost was gone, however, Revalli released her flame spell, just to see what would happen. She still felt the ghost, but she was dealing with an unknown element here, and decided that some experimentation was in order.

Re: ranger Test Thread

Releasing her spell proved to do nothing. The ghost didn't reappear but its pressence was still felt. It seemed she had driven it off for now, but why it was afraid of the fire seemed to stick out. From the accounts she heard the girl had drowned in the river. Though thinking back the ghost did mention not letting her touch her like he did. Still after twenty or so minutes if Revealli lingered the sobs of the girl would start again.

Re: ranger Test Thread

With nothing else to do, Revalli would explore the mill as best she could, trying to determine if there was anything she'd missed. She would go outside when the crying started again, looking around the area. Had the girl been buried nearby? She couldn't remember, but if she had maybe there would be something at the grave. This was all very strange so far.

Re: ranger Test Thread

The office, the silos, and the mill stone. Nothing seemed out of place and the documents in the office where mostly a ledger for transactions. Finding nothing of import in the building at lest Revalli headed out once the crying began again. Leaving the mill proper Revealli spoted the tombstone or at lest memorial to the ghost girl in question. The grave itself was unkept and overgrown but the tombstone was still legible.

In memory of our beloved daughter Lilly.

Inspecting the small grave a little more revealed nothing other than the date of birth and death. This at lest matched the man's story so that much was true. Still it was over a year ago why would they ghost appear now?

Re: ranger Test Thread

"Strange... Why are you here now?" Revalli muttered under her breath, finally opting to let her summoned cat vanish back into the aether. "Why? And more importantly.... How do I get rid of you?" She stood silently for a moment before looking back to the mill, staring at it for a moment before returning to it.

Re: ranger Test Thread

Once more Revalli entered the mill. It was as still as ever with the occasional mote of dust floating in the air. Above the ghostly girl cried to herself more. It seemed she was upstairs but why linger there? The only thing of note was the window overlooking the river and the top of the silos. To her right was the office and its paperwork sadly in much disorder. Where she was the grain lift and output for the silos. Just beyond that was the still grindstone.

Re: ranger Test Thread

Having found nothing else that she could think of as a clue so far, Revalli hurried over to the office, watching the crying ghost and then seeing if she could find anything of note among the scattered paperwork.

Re: ranger Test Thread

The office was a mess, paper work lay scattered over the desk. Sorting threw it would take some time but with little else to go on Revalli looked threw the notes. Most seemed to be ledger work. However it was this paper work that Revalli noticed something off. The papers dated for the previous year had a healthy flow of money. The mill was making good coin. The Date's after the mill was left to Jansen saw a huge ballooning of profit with Jansen nearly doubling the price for flour and cutting the price he paid for grain.

"Hrm... Maybe if I take these to someone they'll be able to make something of it," Revalli said thoughtfully. She pocketed the ledgers, and took another look around for something else before going back out to see if the ghost had returned.

Re: ranger Test Thread

Soft crying from above made the presence of the ghost all to clear. Still ledger in hand Revalli searched for something to help her solve this problem. Rummaging around the office turned up little besides a small portrait of the family. Looking over it briefly Revalli saw what the girl had looked liked before her accident. Raven locks curled down to frame her face which had the same fair complexion of most Crolians. The girls eyes were a deep blue and at the time of this portrait she appeared to be at the cusp of womanhood. Sadly there was little else for Revalli to find here and short of asking the ghost which would probably anger it again she was at a dead end.

Finding nothing that would easily allow her to put the spirit to rest, Revalli sighed and went back to the ghost, wanting to see if it would remember their previous encounter.

Re: ranger Test Thread

Revalli found the ghost much in the same state as before, crying while sitting on the moldy sacks of grain. She didn't react violently as she approached and only looked up as the elfin woman entered. "Go away......" She seemed fainter than before her spectril body easier to see thru.
