Re: RJ113419 - Dungeons and Prisoners

Son of a bitch, don't sneak up on people hun! Anyway monkey, how long does it normally take to translate one map? I know jack shit about how to but I did want to try my hand at it sometime.
Eh, it depends really, when I first started it could take me anywhere between 2 and 3 hours per map.

That said, normally I do my work inside RPGMaker and have to deal with events etc, I'm using a different system this time which seems to be a bit faster. I got about 5 maps done in 3 hours when I first started this, granted they were small enough. Basically, it can take a long time but sometimes you'll just fly through it.

Awesome, Monkeyman is on the job ^^
I liked your commitment to getting Saki Quest as correct as it was, and you have a wealth of experience to draw on in for D&P.

Fucking awesome, mind of I ask how and/or where I should start if I try translating something made on RPGMaker?

Learn the language used, first... Or get good with machine translators. Start small. Find something short that looks interesting to you. Personally, I'd see if you can get ITH or ChiiTrans or even Translation Aggregator to work. TA is probably a good idea, as it receives data from five or six translation programs. You need a hook for TA (of course). Some people claim ITH is better, but I could never get it to hook a fish, let alone some text. AGTH, while easier to work with has problems with some games. Take your pick. Whatever software you pick, you'll have to be able to keep your attention on multiple areas of the screen. Sure, most of us take in the whole screen at any given time but almost all of our focus is directed at one small portion of it. TA is a thing of beauty. Used it a couple of times. Sometimes it spews garbage, but most of the translation boxes work very well.
Good luck, Myst ^^v

Basically this, I don't wanna hijack the thread so I'll just give you a few tips.

1) Pick a game you like / loosly know the story too.

2) Take your time, don't announce it to anyone if you plan to release it, pressure can really fuck up your drive to actually work on it.

3) I prefer to use Chiitrans because it has custom dictionaries, but what ever you feel comfortable with works.

4) Don't be afraid to change some things if you need to, Japanese is a COMPLETELY different language, english doesn't have nearly half the sounds that it does (Granted im not doing that for D+P simply because ILL's been helping me with the one or two things I didn't manage to understand) Just stay as close as you can to the original translation and you're good.

5) This is the most important point. You WILL hate the game you're translating, after I did Saki Quest it took me 3 months before I even opened it again and it was one of my favourite games, haven't even looked at Virgin Island since I did it.

6) Don't give up, it can take a while, especially your first game, but set your self a reasonable goal, a map or two every day or even every second day, before you know it you'll have a lot of the hard work done.

If you end up hating something you love, for the sake of other it's not honor.
It's sacrifism and altruism.

And that can only be repaid by thanks, caus it's priceless.

Heard translating was hard work, but never imagined it was SO hard. Guess I won't have it to do it. I'm already having a hell of a time learning how to use RPG maker...

Well, guess I bow even more with thanks and gratitude to the translator now.

Re: RJ113419 - Dungeons and Prisoners

@Squark and Monkeyman: Thanks you two, I always use AGTH and TA when I run a game though but, I'll give Chiitrans a try for actual translations. Plus, I know what you mean about Japanese, fuck it practically any language, being so different from English through firsthand experience. Got to say I like Latin, there's just something about it that makes it awesome to use when you want to swear at someone. :D Still though, not like I'd ever announce what I'm translating since I've seen people get fucked over and lose their drive because of the pressure from both fans and trolls.

@iron and bry (sounds like a law firm:eek:): I'd have to agree with you two on that to a extent. Just don't end up like cmac, alright Monkeyman? Every time I find out he's sick and won't stay in bed just to work on SM3, I threaten to tie him down then jab an IV into his arm.

One last note on this translating business, I have to go into the script editor to add in the text correct?

Oh no, for the most part you won't need to go near the scripts. The texts are in the common events tab (accessed by hitting F9) there's also a lot of text on each map in events, switch it to event mode in the tool bar and you'll see them.

Re: RJ113419 - Dungeons and Prisoners

To anyone who still doesn't fully grasp the magnitude of the work monkeyman is doing on this thing, this is a pretty brutal way to localize something.

The traditional approach would be to export the scripts to something like MemoQ and use that for editing/division, then re-insert it into the application. The tools to do that aren't available, so he's doing it BY HAND.

This is a little like discovering your tablesaw isn't going to cut that steel girder, and going "FUCK IT WE'LL DO THIS SHIT THE HARD WAY" and Karate chopping the thing in two.

I'm pretty sure thats why he won't be able to play the game for awhile like saki que (since D&P looks like it has a lot of content to translate) and all we can do is thank him for his amazing work on translating the game

Just wanted to say Monkeyman did a great job on Saki Quest and his other games, so I'm looking forwards to the translation even more!

What happened to habisain's translating tool? I know it wasn't finished but he seemed happy to share it with the translator so that they could at least translate the parts it works with easier.

Okay, thanks a lot hun. After some practice on an actual game I might be able to help you with the translating, that way you can play the game when it comes out like the rest of us without cringing in fear. ;)
