Look, if you're going to develop the best H-game ever, more power to you. I never said that you aren't, just that I find the overall story hard to believe, that's all. If your game turns out to be great, that's cool. If you make tons of money with it, yay. If your game turns out to be so good that other developers need to work harder to keep up, that's awesome too.

asdf500:
Umm, I dunno where you got the 'I have to develop a game or I go homeless permanently' idea from, it's not what my blog post says. I've been sending out resumes whenever I could get my hands on a computer and doing job runs for months now--all to absolutely no success; not even the most shitty companies in town which offer jobs on the verge of slave work tried to contact me, not even when I tried being open about being at the bottom and willing to work for peanuts. And I won't go homeless if nothing pans out-- I already AM homeless as much as it gets, and it'll only get worse.

So in the meantime I absolutely have to think of a plan B of sorts, because I might not get any job offer for even months to come. Other than working a regular job, creating games is all I can do, and I have a chance to sporadically do so for a few more days--that's why I decided to go that route. I know it's not the best plan, but it's the best plan I could think of. And my deadline isn't the end of the year--it's in 6 days from today, which is when Greg's mom will start getting chemo treatments, and it's expensive as all hell. In other words--they won't be able to help me anymore, not for some obscure reasons, but for the sole fact they won't be able to afford it anymore. I can't possibly have the guy help me over his own parent.

What I disclosed about my backstory is really just a scratch on the surface, and I told the absolute minimum on purpose--even I wouldn't believe the whole story, not even now. The only point that really matters is that my mind broke, I went homeless because of it, and I've been unable to get out of it on my own.

As for the game you're talking about--it's not my game. I've approached HentaiWriter if he could help me spread the word about my case around, and he asked me whether I'd be up for handling the code for the game he's been kicking around. I'll have to do it pro bono until he starts a patreon campaign, which is when I'll get a percentage out of the funds we manage to gather there. I accepted because I know I won't be able to get far with what I have of my own, and it's too late for me to build a hentai game from scratch in just a few days, so it's worth a shot. I dunno what's his arrangement with the artist.

I don't know why you're so worried about getting scammed.

Let's say that, for some irrational reason, cheshireCat decided to post here even though he's actually doing fine. What's his goal? Make a hundred bucks? I'm broke, live at my parents' house (I'm 24), and have a medical condition that means I don't know how I will ever be able to hold any type of job. I STILL don't give a shit about getting a hundred bucks if it means I spend hours reading and responding to people online. It's complicated, involved, and morally compromising; all of those things contribute to stress, and your tolerance for stress is extremely low when you're in the shitter.

Aside from the absurdly weak argument that cheshireCat may be scamming us, let me ask you: are you seriously unwilling to get scammed a handful of times if it meant profoundly impacting a far greater number of people who are in need?

Yes, being gullible makes people think you are naive, but that doesn't mean being skeptical makes them think you aren't naive. No one is impressed by the eternal skeptic who cocks his eyebrow at every funny story and unverifiable claim made across the bar. What IS impressive is the person who KNOWS that sometimes people lie and people cheat, and resiliently chooses to be optimistic in spite of that fact.

You know, I've had my disagreements with you in other topics, but I'm giving you rep for this, nice to see people like you still exist.

I couldn't agree more. Keep up the good work cheshireCat. You are more inspiring than any important guy I see on the news every day.

Yes, he is. And in the world of adults, reputation means *a lot* depending on what your career is.
If you're in an industry that deals with entertainment, or public face type stuff, the littlest thing can completely destroy your SFW job, leaving you broke, or worse, homeless.

Porn and especially Hentai are pretty much reviled in mainstream society (at least in America and quite a few other countries) and despite the leaps we've taken as a species to realize it's harmless fun, if you're in any public job (again, entertainment, media, anything where you deal with the public in any way, shape or form) and they find out you're involved with porn, you're basically screwed.

They *will* fire you, they'll say it's not for the porn, but most jobs are set with the rule that they can fire you for "any given reason".
And hentai? Ten times worse, because of how it's been dramatized, similar to BDSM. When you mention hentai, people immediately think MUCH harsher things about you. If you like porn, or make porn, hey, it's sex, we gotta make babies, it feels good, we're still gonna fire you, but you know, you're not a terrible person.

But hentai is so misunderstood that people immediately jump to the worst possible case scenario about it or anything involved with it, and get freaked out of it ten times worse.

So with Cheshire here, who is currently unemployed, do you really think he wants to do anything that could harm his chances to get future employment, which is something you nonstop have to think about as "an adult"?
That's why he's feeling terrible about it.
These are actually excellent points. I admittedly don't have any experience in the industry (though I don't know if you do either), so I can't say with any certainty that my words on the matter aren't founded in naivety. Still, I think there's something to be said for smut being less toxic to one's reputation than most people think. If you include in your portfolio (clean) examples from your work on a game, very rarely is someone going to ask whether it was clean or not. Have you ever heard a news story like, "Activision discovers that one of the thirty programmers that worked on the latest Call of Duty game helped develop a pornographic video game: Call of Duty franchise officially halted, all programmers fired in penance for this atrocity"?

being born with superpowers isn't that inspiring, same for bruce wayne...
Yeah I guess if someone was invulnerable and DIDN'T fight crime at least some of the time, they'd just be the worst person ever. Fighting crime while invulnerable isn't all that inspiring.

Then again, if we really wanna go deep on this very minor joke, you could still say that it's inspiring that, given invulnerability, someone would choose to fight crime as opposed to simply being the greatest criminal ever. I'd be lying if I said I wouldn't walk around town naked or steal a hot dog from a hot dog stand if I knew that the police couldn't do anything about it.

No, but stuff like this happens all the time;

As far as my experience in entertainment and so forth, I'd like to keep my SFW and NSFW lives separate, for obvious reasons, but I definitely have experience in the field of "people act irrationally towards NSFW stuff"

You would first require a reputation before you could have one ruined by being exposed as someone who is making pornographic games. Personally I would not care if I were "exposed" as someone who was making a pornographic game. I wonder what would happen if a college professor decided to have that programming class make a pornographic game instead of another random whatever game they do there. Would anyone even care?

As noted in many examples in the article, some of these people did porn videos, and then decades later, they got fired from their jobs for something they did 10 or 20 years ago.

So it's not about requiring a reputation, it's about ever being able to get one.

Also, they would guaranteed be fired, and lose their teaching license. There have been teachers who have lost their jobs for much, much less regarding this type of thing (for example, teaching about words that SOUND like "homosexuality");

Those articles are...

This sounds incredibly foolish, but somehow I just don't think that would happen to me. I have no basis for saying that, but I just... don't think that's something an employer could do to me. I'd be on the phone with every lawyer, news publication, and internet journalist that I could find, and I'd file suit under pretense of my employer having discriminated against my cultural background (as the pornography industry is technically a culture).

I'm sure that's what they thought too, though.

You underestimate the stigma that is pornography in the western world. I basically live a double life with this stuff.

Getting back to the topic at hand, I'm glad you are still alive Cheshire. I am sorry for the circumstances but it looks like you are trying hard. Don't stop swinging here.

As to what you all have shown me in the posts above, I am liking it very much. I hope you will all link the patreon very soon as i will see if can get some funds around to help you guys.

Also Cheshire, I hope you can continue with the last game you were developing. The character you had up there was absolutely amazing (as well as sexy) and I'd love to see her in action.

I hope you guys can start up the patreon soon, and i will see if i can get some more people interested in the game.

But what are the actual consequences going to be if you came out with it? If you aren't working for a company that requires your face to remain marketable, what are they going to do to you?

"So we recently came to understand that you, prior to your being employed here, actually worked on a pornographic video game?"

"Yes."

What happens then? You get fired? The employer would be entering territory so legally volatile that I don't see how any rational person could go through with it when the alternative is simply to let it be.

99% of the time, I think the only damage it'd do is that it might make you look weird or ostracize you briefly -- both things that can be overcome with social prudence and confidence.

Just to let you know, there is legal precedent to not only firing people who don't look a certain way when it comes to jobs where your face is presented to the public (as in, you look unkempt, haven't kept yourself clean looking, so forth), but also outright refusing to hire them as well.

"Rogers was denied a position at the Tilted Kilt based on a federal law that allows companies to deny employment to individuals that do not fit their brand image."

What happens then? You get fired? The employer would be entering territory so legally volatile that I don't see how any rational person could go through with it when the alternative is simply to let it be.

They would face zero legal pressure for firing someone for this reason, again, because of the stigma of pornography in America.

I'm sorry for derailing the topic so far with these kinda things, and I'm not attacking you by dropping all this knowledge on ya, this is more of an educational thing for everyone reading the topic, I figure.

Also, I'm not saying Cheshire is 100% boned for getting any more employment if anyone finds out about him doing hentai, it's just that he has a viable reason to want to hide that part of his life, as do many of us here working on h-games on ULMF, myself included.

He could absolutely get employment other places even if this stuff got out, it's just that again, it's a stigma that SOME employers would be unable to deal with.

Re: Pendulum (AWESOME DISCOUNT! ALSO, PLEASE READ FIRST POST EDIT)

Dunno how much the fact will hurt my future employment, but I can already tell you that the people I got in contact with coming from backgrounds different than the h-community (past business partners, video game journalists, guys in the speedrunning community I used to be a big part of) were more shocked about me doing hentai than being homeless, some of them going as far as completely disregarding the latter. Like the only response I received from the guy who did an article on me for RPS was something along the lines "lol you hentai now?".

Anyway, thanks to the support I've received from all the fine people around here (you know who you are), I might be able to beat the shit out of this sooner than I expected :).

Re: Pendulum (AWESOME DISCOUNT! ALSO, PLEASE READ FIRST POST EDIT)

The uniform thing is only when you are in contact with clients, like wearing the McDonald hat and t-shirt and all that stuff. It's in your contract. So the companies can also order you to cut your hairs if you have them long etc... This is fucking ridiculous even tho i know it fits some kind of great analysis of the market.

But for when you are about to be recruited. If you say that you did some hentai stuff, there's a great chance that the guy just deny you and he'll just have to say that he didn't hired you because "you weren't fitting de companie requirement" or some other blury bullsh*t like that.

And I just read the wiki article about at-will employement and WTF is this stupid law ? I mean, in a small, low budget business it could work, but for bigger financial structures it seems very unfair for the employee.
