Re: Dungeon Crawl

Also, I forgot to mention it earlier, but...
as an individual who has a long, dark beard, I find this stereotyping most unbecoming!
Someone mentioned beards being a sign of evil and I ran with it. :)

Re: Dungeon Crawl

The two of you begin to move towards the first door. The one with the soft muttering behind it. You look over your shoulder at the prisoner, a lithe, athletic and aesthetically pleasing elf maiden, with blonde hair that streams down to her back. The long, blade like ears that are a tell-tale sign of her race twitch, and she becomes alert even bound where she is.

She must have heard your whispers or somehow also sensed your presence, but there's not much she can do about it from her current position. At least she does you the favor of not screaming through her gag.

You creep over to the door and press your ear to the surface. Yeah, there's muttering all right, but it's in some sort of foreign tongue, or perhaps it's an incantation, like those sorts you've heard that proper wizards and arcanists can speak to invoke spell effects. The muttering continues, but it starts to increase in volume. The man's voice, whoever it is behind the door, sounds tinged with excitement.

It seems time to enact the second part of your plan. You will sneak in like a shadow and take whoever it is by surprise! So you try the handle. It turns without fuss and you push the doorway in a little further.

There's torchlight, and a bad smell wafting in from this room, like the sickly sweet odor of rotten fruit. You slide into the room, with Hadrian hanging back by the door.

This chamber appears to be a study of sorts, with shelves on either side sparsely populated with books, a writing desk with stacks of parchment on it and a dirty inkwell. Unnervingly, besides the desk there is a wall rack with an array of hooked blades. At the far end of the room is a table/altar of some sort with a body on it. The body looks very pale and lifeless. In front of it is a darkly robed and cowled figure who is the source of the muttering.

Action time!
Choose a course of action:

1. Use this opportunity to your advantage and backstab this guy. Magical ritual plus dead body = necromancy!

2. Announce your presence and demand to know what exactly is going on here, but only do so when you've got the tip of your rapier up against his back.

3. Be extra cautious and try to take time to figure out more about the situation.

4. Slink back out of the room without attracting attention and consult with Hadrian about what should be done.

5. Choose your own course of action.

This... Actually doesn't sound too bad. We can consult Hadrian after?

+1. No need to kill a person only to discover that we have been tricked into killing a brainwashed slave.

Since the mutterer is so entranced with his incantation perhaps he wouldn't notice us playing our song softly. And since he seems to be getting louder by the second you can do the same until the song takes effect. Then allow him to go all evil sorcerer before you let Hadrian smite him.

Re: Dungeon Crawl

I'd actually go with #2 to see what information we can gather. Make sure to call in Hadrian to help, but if he makes any sudden moves don't hesitate to knock him out or wound him such that he's unable to retaliate.

Re: Dungeon Crawl

Going to go with the most popular "people's choice" - the stealthy knockout

You understand that you want to disable this shady character before he can complete his nefarious necromancy, but you'll certainly need him around for questioning later. In the common tales that all bards know, the best way to achieve this outcome is to take a sturdy object and smack the person over the head with it.

A heavy, broad-based candlestick lying on the edge of the writing desk will do. You creep softly over to it, pluck it up and brandish it over the cloaked figure's head.

*SLAM!*

Both you and the muttering magus turn around startled to look at the door just in time to see a hulking, bare-chested brute of a jailer place a thick, reinforced beam across the doorway, locking it from the inside. To your dismay, you note that the paladin is not in the room with you. You feel thunderstruck by the realization that in your eagerness to interrupt the ritual, you neglected to notice the shadowy corner of the room on the other side of the inward swinging door, where this other man had been sitting, awake and presumably leering at you in the same manner that he is now actively doing.

"Who are--" the magus begins to say.

"Sudden strike!" You announce, surprising even yourself as instinct kicks in and you belt him across the jaw without warning with the candlestick.

The magus crumples into the side wall, his lip split quite nastily and gouting blood. With him on the floor, you can see a ghastly, malnourished and pale body strapped to the table in front of him. The male body, seems to have multiple metal shards poking out of his flesh in what looks to be a most painful state of affairs. You assume it's painful because, unlike your first assumption, the man is clearly not dead, by dint of his eyes roaming from side to side in a delirium.

"That weren't nice." The brute behind you growls and before you can respond, a meaty hand grips you painfully by the wrist that holds the candlestick and rips backward, sending you off your feet and spiraling through the air, hitting the shelves painfully.

Ariel takes 7 damage! (11/18)

The only good thing about this is that the brute let you go in the process. You have your sword and your flute, if you wanted to try going toe to toe with the jailer. Behind you is a another door, that will lead to a new room. Perhaps if you're quick enough you can pull it open and try to escape. Or there's the heavy beam, keeping the other door locked. You could try fighting the brute off with the intention of opening the door as soon as an opportunity allows.

Or perhaps you could reason with the jailer. Nothing lethal had happened just yet, maybe he'd be understanding if you tried to convince him that you're not really a threat, you were just surprised... (A)

1. Draw your sword and fight the jailer.

2. Take out your flute and try to play some notes of the dragon song to enflame his passion. (Suggest what sort of passion you'd like to enflame)

3. Run away through the new door.

4. Draw your sword and fight the jailer, but only so that you can give yourself an opportunity to take off that beam and get back to the room where Hadrian was.

5. Raise your hands non-threateningly and try to reason with the jailor...
x) seductively (use your feminine appeal to lower his guard)
y) diplomatically (I'm a guest of the count!)
z) manipulatively (make up some condition that will make him hesitate)

6. Suggest a different course of action.

-----------------

You are now Hadrian, the Paladin.

You were watching Ariel sneak up on the chanting man in the dark robes when all of a sudden the heavy door is slammed right in your face, forcing you backwards onto your rump. You hastily right yourself and move to the door, trying the latch, but some obstruction on the other side is preventing you from getting through!

Sensing danger, and knowing that Ariel is most likely unable to handle it alone, you rack your mind for your next move. (B)

1. Break/hack through the door with brute force.

2. Find another way around. The other doorway might provide a way through.

3. You might be outnumbered here, but the elf maiden tied up near the wall seems like she could be of some help if you got her free quickly enough.

4. Shout loudly and demand that the door be opened in the name of the Holy Order of Jorn, the Imperator of Law, and rightful authority over the noble houses of Dal.

5. Suggest your own course of action.

A5z - make up a story that's there's a full assault force of Knights of Jorn on the other side of the door, and that he better open the door before they smash it down and kill him. If he cooperates they'll be lenient

I was going to say A6: run for the door and try to remove the beam, but that is a lot better. So, MrMe has my vote.

Re: Dungeon Crawl

B4 if were lucky she'll be a spellcaster who can open the door by some means.

If possible use a song to help manipulate the jailer while backing away from. A song to make him sleep would be great, but I don't think we have that. If we go for diplomacy a song would help.

I'll back up Moonblack on this one - hopefully, Ariel can use her superior dexterity to try and avoid this brute long enough for Hadrian to get to her or for her to do a series of hit-and-run like attacks, slowly poking the jailer full of holes.

I'll go with this. Ignore the earlier deleted bit. My antibiotics are very disorienting.

We have a tie between B3 and B4.

I'll give it a bit longer, then flip a coin if no one else jumps in.

Re: Dungeon Crawl

"Stop!" You say, holding up a hand to the brute. "Please, I am a guest of the count... you would not want to bring harm to someone that he has welcomed into his house."

The brute, takes a step towards you, but seeing that you don't look to be scrambling away and you aren't pulling your sword, he does stop midway and considers what you're saying.

"Only guests that come down here are those wot meant t' be harmed." The jailor growls, though there is an uncertainty in his voice.

"I am a bard," you explain. "Companion to the knights of Jorn, who travel with me incidentally, and who you unfortunately slammed the door on. I hope for your sake that the knights on the other side of that door don't look at all this and get the wrong idea. They tend to kill men who rough up women."

"I rough up intruders wot smack my employers 'round, woman. Though as I see you now, it seems a waste to bloody up a girl as fetching as yourself, bard or no bard."

You allow yourself a smile at the awkward compliment, though you note the unsettling leer in the man's eyes. You wonder where Hadrian is and why he hasn't so much as made a sound from the other side of the door.

"Why... thank you, good sir. And I think it would be a shame for such a... strong, masculine fellow such as you to be harmed or even killed over a misunderstanding."

The man's eyes slide over to the crumpled form of the magus, and the deleriously shaking body of the poor wretch upon the table, who makes only a weak throaty sound, like the croak of a frog elongated out in a terribly unsettling manner.

"This is no place for pretty eyes to see. Many enemies of the count, you know. Debtors, poachers and brigands. Scum and dogs they is. D'Graz an' his men in robes, they've ways of making sure they don't bother the count's lands no more. Most people wouldn't like it, but that's cos they don't have the stomach for it, miss."

He motions to the door behind you.

"You come with me. Maybe we talk a little more and we see if I have to tell the guards above about what you've done, or maybe we find a way to keep you out of our cells, mm? You don't want to end up like that deep elf spy in the other room. She's a pretty one too, but she's a deceitful spider, like all her race. You don't want to end up like her..."

You're pleased that you've managed to get the brute to open up. He must like the look of you, but you're guessing by his tone that his idea of keeping you out of a cell is not going to be as easy or as palatable as you'd wish it to be. You've tried to use the short time that he's been talking to look for some sort of weakness or looking around casually for something that could aid you in overcoming him, but nothing has become readily apparent and you find that he's now actually drawn closer to you without you realizing it. Practically within arm's reach, the brute can likely close on you in a flash if it were in his mind to do so.

What should you do? (A)

1. Attempt to spring back and draw your sword. You don't like what this man is insinuating and intend to fight your way out of this.

2. Keep your calm and try to go along with the man for now. Accompany him to the next room, but try to not let him be all over you.

3. Play into the chance that he's giving you. Tart yourself up a bit and act like you're interested in him. But you'll turn the tables on him as soon as you can.

4. It's not like you're some virgin maiden, and although you'd like to be more valorous about it, if a little sexuality can get you out of this without getting jailed or killed, then you'll do it.

5. Scream for help. Hadrian's obviously not going fast enough. Then flee as fast as you can.

6. Other (Make your own suggestion).

----------------------------------

You are now Hadrian, the Paladin.

You decide that numbers might be the best way to save Ariel and quickly cross to the X-shaped cross that holds the elf maid by her limbs. You cut the bonds to her left hand and then begin to work on the right.

Immediately she rips the blindfold from her head, showing off glaring amethyst eyes. Her hand then rips away at the bit gag, which comes free only after you free her other hand and she is able to unlatch the buckle and leather loop that fastened it in place.

Her first words are in a harsh sounding language that you do not understand, though it must be a form of elvan. She stares at you, her intense gaze riveted upon your actions at her ankles. When her last limb is free, you begin to rise your head, only to find that her beautifully formed leg is brushed against your cheek, and her hand clutches at the blond tuft of hair on the back of your scalp, keeping you pressed against her thigh with an unexpected strength. You are all too aware that only a ragged, thin strip of cloth and a matter of perhaps half a foot separates your eyes from her womanhood, and knowing this, you keep your head bowed, out of regard for her privacy and both your honors.

"A human man, izt? Un knecht?" She speaks the common tongue with an odd foreign accent.

"An unusual savior, I think. What is your name, sir knecht?"

You resist the urge to explain that her pronunciation is wrong and that you are more than a mere knight, but a full paladin. Now is not the time for semantics.

"I am Hadrian, and I've freed you to help my ally who --"

"You have freed me, but I do not think that this requires me to die for you or your friend, yah?"

You feel her hand slip sensually along your cheek and raise your chin up so that you are forced to gaze up at her. You are greeted with a perfect view of the underside of her ample bosom. You press your weight upwards, intending to rise, but her other hand forces you down again.

"You look better zere... kneeling before me. Such a strong, beautiful man you are. I think I vill keep you close~"

"Good lady, I must insist." You stand, powering through her half-hearted attempt to keep you in your place.

"Oh my, und a strong will to go with the muscles. That will be fun."

You stare at the elf, perplexed and with little comprehension.

"I do not know who you are, but --"

"Reina. Reina Von Golza," she interrupts, those deep purple eyes penetrating your icy blues unnervingly.

"Reina then. I have a companion on the far side of that door. I am going to help her. I have freed you in the hopes that you will aid me in her rescue, but I shall let the honor of that decision remain with you. I shall try the door, and if it does not budge, I shall try for the other room. Your freedom is your own."

"I know vhat honor is, Hadrian; und a Von Golza does not shirk from paying back her debts. But I do this on mine own terms. You give me no weapons, no armor. I am veak with lack of food und maltreatment. Und most important of all zis, behind that door are ghouls who guard the wizard and feast on his victims.

"This count's magi are practicing ze forbidden art of necromancy. It is spreading like a plague from where the Great Woods border this land. You do not bear the look of these Dalish Uplanders. If so, perhaps you will fight to stop this necromancy?"

"Necromancy is a lawless, vile art that threatens the natural order of all life. All of my order are sworn to destroy it."

"Zen we are at common purpose, mine Hadrian. But the fact remains, there are many ghouls, between us and your friend."

"Can you help me to defeat the ghouls?" You ask, worrying now about all the time that has gone by.

"I could, but I would need my... (B)

What does Reina ask for?

1. ...My bow.
2. ...My sword.
3. ...My hammer.
4. ...My staff.
5. ...My brooch.
6. ...My pet.

"And where can we find that?" You ask.

"It should be somewhere near my original cell, unless they have moved it since taking me here. Back that way, I think."

Decision. (C)

1. Help Reina get her item.

2. Tell her to go search for it and then come back to help you. Ariel might not have a lot of time, so you've got to get through those ghouls as soon as possible.

3. Tell her that you'll get it later, she'll just have to stick close to you and you'll protect her from the ghouls. You swear it.

4. Make your own suggestion.

A - 2
B - 5 (I'm curious to see what she needs a brooch for)
C - 1 (if she needs her brooch that badly then leaving her alone is not a good idea, especially since she's not in top form)

A3
B5 - I am also curious about this brooch, as it seems to be the odd one of the bunch.
C1 - While I don't trust this elf completely, she'd become quite the asset if we could sway her to become even a partial ally.
