So, I downloaded a bunch of new figters and stuff to this... But some I can't get to from the character select screen. What gives? How do I get to them?
Merely dragging and dropping characters into your folder doesn't work. You'll have to put in some more effort.

You have to open up "select.def", found in your "data" folder. Using a text editor (I use Notepad++, but normal Notepad works.), you'll have to enter the name of each character's ".def" file in there. So, if I had "Girl1.def", I'd type it in there so Girl1 would show at character select. There's also some thing about setting orders, but I'm not too sure what that is.

EDIT: Annnnd it didn't work. Goddammit. XD Why can't I just drag and drop? I tried replacing a random with Kuromaru4.def, and it just created a blank space. Why can't this be easy?

Also, make sure that the folder with the .def file is named exactly the same as the .def file itself. I have experienced derps this way, not having the character available since the folder name was capitalized while the .def was all lower-case letters but the problem fixing itself once I made sure the folder matched the .def exactly.

Yep sometimes it's a problem with the character files themselves, not anything the player is doing wrong. People rename/modify/translate files and mess up sometimes. Occasionally you'll need to open the character up in Fighter Maker or whatever and make sure that all the names/files match up. Luckily that doesn't happen too often, but it's something to remember.

And I figured it out! I had added Kuromaru4 as "Kuromaru4.def".

I then looked at the list. You don't add .def and his select file is "kuromaru4". No capitals. I figured it out! Thanks to everyone who helped!

Just use Vselect for added characters. Its much easier.

I'm tempted to post something, but I'm always tweaking it. The trouble is that sometimes changing one thing about one rapist character leads to changing all of the victims. For example, you might need to separate sprites into more layers so it looks right when they get all tangled up...

I basically took PotS E.Honda and modded in some code from an obscure Kuromaru variant and picked E.Honda sprites for them accordingly. (This particular Kuromaru summoned a couple of Minotaur attacks, which is what I used.) Unfortunately, it's a really non-standard attack that doesn't automatically work with any of the established victims (without custom modding case-by-case).

My modded code is sort of a mess. Badly commented, and with extra garbage comments that mostly don't mean anything and were thrown in on the fly because I had no idea what I was doing and it was mostly trial-and-error. I'm not sure whether that's the sort of thing I want to clean up. There's also an alternate H-attack that was being buggy and I didn't like it as much anyway, and it's not possible to activate the state anyway in the current setup.

I generally prefer victims who are 30ish. I also find it more satisfying when the enemy AI is challenging but not super spammy and cheap. You know, like they would be in an actual game. Getting pushed around and denied a lot but then going to town when you finally find an opening, so to speak. There's more urgency when there's a real chance of losing.

Anyway, I keep not wanting to bundle it up as is because it keeps evolving and it's all over the place. There are also tons of relics lurking around, like image files and backups that are no longer relevant at all. I also screwed up some of the palettes for the portraits, and I'd have to go back and re-assign them or whatever.

Is everyone just collecting, or has anyone else modded - or even built - characters?

A longtime lurker here.
I haven't mastered code, but whenever I find sprites (i.e. the ryona uploader or ryona hinajo website) or gifs I can rip into sprites, I edit rapers/victims myself. For example, I've added the "pregnant" finishers to nearly all the victims I own (about 80+, since every girl I roster MUST be FULLY kuro/mino/birdie/abaoker compatible) and many have self-added kuro/psychoraper finishers too. I've heavily modified victims like Yoko, Psylocke, and Cami too.

I've also added background scenes for most of my girls when a specific sex anim plays (inspired by the Tifa victim). And with the new internal cumshots recently uploaded, my kuro has three different cum anims (his own, the default one, and the doggy one) that correspond to what attack he uses.

I apologize if it seems like I'm bragging; I've been into H-Mugen for about 2-3 years now, and I've learned so much just by testing and playing around. I only want to demonstrate that, with hard work and time, dedicated mugen newbs can master the hentai element and make H-mugen their own.

TLDR; Yes, I mod H-characters. No, I don't build them, though I have some knowledge.

You pretty much have to do have some modding capability to get the most out of it. As far as that goes I can do some minor sprite edits for more fluid animations, and thats pretty much it, otherwise it's manually adding sprite from the japanese mugen board

Schlussel 1.8 Beta and it had Finisher on Both Minotaur and Kuromaru.

I'm probably the wrong person to ask, but I'll give it a shot.

As I said before, I've learned by putting a LOT of time and effort into the engine. I've made a ton of mistakes and I basically learn what to do by learning what NOT to do. Here's what I did/do:

1.) Get Mugen. I'd grab a pre-built pack of mugen with some characters (there's a LOT of Mugen screenpacks/pre-made games on the interwebz, but I'll discuss the H-Mugen ones here, since we're all interested in that). RMDB was a very spiffy version of mugen (QoF), while you've got others like Tetchi's TQH 0 versions and Betmark's. While I appreciate the work that the RMDB's creator put into his mugen (you could play that as a whole game and never mod mugen), it's too fancy for me...I've got the very basic one. Just google-fu those to download them as a starting point. Just note that RMDB is shut down, though I think there's a mega link a few posts ago (the game itself is enormous in size).

2.) Learn the Basics. I'd suggest learning the folders and file types, where they all go, and how to edit them (your select/system files for mugen, as well as the def/cns/sprite/animation files for your characters). You can find pretty simple tutorials on most of the main mugen forums and websites (google them, most are non-H though). That will get you through understanding how to add characters and stages to your mugen and making it all nice and pretty.

3.) Practice. I'd play around with Fighter Factory or whatever you use to edit your characters. Learn how to add/edit sprites and animations and palettes and sounds, and make your own. Then you get to a more advanced level and once you've got it down, you can edit characters for H-content by ripping gifs and sprites...case in point, I learned the simple but revolutionary new joker/misoguchi/mino/kuro alt finishers through the ryona uploader sozai series downloads and then practicing...then finding gifs and making my own. Ditto for the psychoraper finishers.

I'm still learning, and I'm at this stage TBH. I'm nowhere near the mugenero guy who posts some sick vids on FC2 (I'd trade all I've gotten just to get his Jill, or at least learn how to code her...too bad he's pretty much only an exhibitionist). Still, I think I've gotten fairly far, and once I can get the code down, I'll probably be at least a little closer to getting his Cho/Chong combo or his Zangief down. :D

4.) Search for characters. This one takes time. Some H-mugen characters are so renowned, there are hundreds of them floating around in many different edits and variants and versions on all sorts of websites/mugen packs. I've got about 8 versions of Athena, for example...and over two dozen outdated/non-H compatible ones (the earlier 8 are fully-Mino/Kuro compat). Also, I'm a bit of a snob for H-characters. If a character isn't completely H-compat, I either make the anims with pre-made sprites myself or toss the character into a junk folder (got a LOT of characters)...and it's sort of annoying because lots of creators or warehouse owners claim a character is H-compat when it's only partially so, with one or two compat anims, or just a H finish for Mino and/or Kuro and nothing else.

So yeah, once you get to a certain point, it gets tedious trying to find new chars, esp since many H-sites are super old/abandoned (or in the case of the once-thriving H-mugen Spanish forum, 'upgraded' to be restricted only to members, then abandoned. Good job admins), and most are Japanese only. The H-mugen community is pretty quiet/secretive, or at least non-Engl, and that's a problem we need to work on here.

But you've got a few great resources too. I'd recommend checking the ryona uploader (the link's been posted a few times, the PW is usually ryona2) for new chars/sprites, and the ryona hinanjo site for upcoming releases/sprites/anims to use. Tetchi's still modding, I think, and Betmark, BlueInsect, and Rolandsburk are still around, with RMDB in the shadows. Those are the main guys for me.

And if you're like me, with an insatiable thirst for characters, if you look hard enough, you find some random gems that few others have or know about. I.e., there's the CG-like cowgirl that has arguably the best H-anims I've ever seen (basically made for Mino), while the Sailor Neptune-Test character is probably the best and most complete H-character I have (better than Tifa or the latest Asagi). And there's the recently released eponymous Jessica Smoke (though I'm not a fan of scat). The first two characters I've yet to see anyone have, let alone know about, even on other websites and the most comprehensive mugen packs.

5.) Ask for Help/Help Others. I don't like to think of myself as a snob or a hoarder, but I'm likely not going to share the characters I've edited. The reason being that people don't 'earn' characters or 'learn' them by handouts. (yes, I get the hypocrisy there, and no, I don't really think I've 'earned' a download of someone's character just by looking endlessly for it). I feel that, if you want to reach your full potential of modding, you need to work hard at it, learning from other people and then helping others afterward. Thus, while my understanding of H-mugen is extremely limited, I'll gladly assist anyone who wants to learn, to the best of my ability. (I don't really care for PMs, because most users/lurkers have similar questions and 1-1 help doesn't really benefit the entire community).

I get some people just want to play the game easily or simply with the best H-chars possible, and that's fine. But IMHO, you don't really reach your fullest potential/enjoyment and you're not exactly helping the community by leeching/being spoonfed, so I wouldn't say those people deserve anything. Grow and help others. Work a bit.

Sorry for the wall of text guys. I've lurked since the days of the original thread and this is pretty much what I wanted to say since then. :/ And yeah, I'm the guy at school who would say, "I'm not going to give you the answers to the homework problem, but I'll help you find it yourself!" (the guy you wanted to punch). :p

yeah cool, no i totally understand that mentality, i'm a programmer, if anyone has that type of mentality its people who program

the only thing you can really teach another person when it comes to programming is how to start and what concepts are, because there are a billion of ways you can achieve one goal, and to get to the goal you just gotta keep making mistakes till you learn what not to do and what works for you in your head logically

found out how to edit, turns out its much easier than i thought

the trick is to go into debug mode and seeing what the SPR number is on a compatible character, looking up the SPR number in the animations bit of fighter factory, and then copy paste the number on other characters you want to make compatible. After that you just need to make your animation sprites on those numbers and time them correctly.

(though i'm not sure if that is 100% true all the time, it just worked out for me so far)

--update 2--

k so in exploring further i found out the SPR number actually means the sprite group number because when i finally found the sprites that matched the animation of a different character, the group number matched the number of the SPR number in the debug info

so i guess you just gotta do one extra step more really

if anyone is interested in actually learning this stuff, its actually pretty fun if you got the extra time or a lot of insomnia like i do right now
