And indeed they had. About a minute of descent by elevator saw exiting into maze of intersecting hallways which would be trivial to get lost in. After touching something on the side of her glasses, Cassidy sets off as though she knew exactly where she was headed despite the lack of identifying features. Though she didn't say it, she seemed open for any questions.

Within but a minute of walking, the woman pulls open one of the hundreds of doors and ushers you inside. It is colored in the same greyish-white as the rest of the building, but you can easily make out a computer terminal set into the wall, several chairs, a small hamper for holding clothes, and an odd sink and shower combo tucked into a corner.

Dominating the room with its stark white mass, however, was what could only be the EGG capsule. Its articulated shell was opened, and in the spaces between what might be a hundred meters of wire was visible. At its center was what looked rather like the child of a recliner and a bed, which was apparent in its intent to serve as comfortable seating.

Heading over to the EGG corp building after having gotten chosen to be their beta tester for the whole virtual reality machine game thing, Amber was giddy as hell and as she entered the building after parking in the small parking garage when she finally found it. "Say... those the new glasses that have the miniature computer things built in? As the pod closes around you, Cassidy turns away and towards the screen. Any sound of the facility is cut off as the EGG seals itself, but your guide's voice cuts through the darkness inside quickly. "The tutorial is enabled, I'm transferring you over to the AI now. Have fun, and try to relax while we start up. Since it's your first time, I'll be here to make sure you get started okay, so no panic attacks!" By her voice, a smile can almost be heard.

You can barely feel the prick of a needle, which is followed by a few brief moments of paralysis. Then the sense of confinement seems to simply drop away, as if you were no longer inside a pod and instead are laying upon a bed in a spacious room. The sound of falling water can be heard, along with the crackle of a fire. A faint red glow fills your sight, at least until you open your eyes, an action that reveals a bedroom of unpainted wood.

Directly across from you, you can see a closet with its door hanging open, and on the same wall to the right lies another door which lies closed. On the wall to your left, a glass window provides light for the room, though from this angle not much can be seen through it.

No prompts seem to be showing up, but then there are no buttons to press. Just your own body to move.

As the sound of the outside world is drowned out by the EGG pod closing around her, Amber sighs softly and prepares for whatever may come. "Alright Cassidy... thanks for that," Amber replied, looking around at the darkness surrounding her.

Her feeling through her body faded away and soon her vision blurred slightly before righting and shifting around so that she was in a large bed. Amber raised up and looked around in this new room, where she smiled and got up, moving over to the closet to see what was inside of it, though she'd look around the rest of the place if there was nothing interesting in the closet. "So... what is this place exactly? The tutorial world I'm assuming," Amber asked curiously as she got up and went towards the closet.

Tutorial, part 2

The wood of the floor creaked slightly as you walked across it, a series of rugs providing a soft surface to walk on. Along the way, you came level with the window, its light playing across your nude form. Fortunately, it seemed there was no-one to see, though your view was in turn rather nice.

The closet itself was fit to walk in, and seemed to hold a wide variety of styles of clothing sized to you. It seemed that you had your pick of what to wear. One wall, however, did not contain clothing but instead weapons. It seemed that you had your pick from a variety of options from spears and swords to bows or even a sling.

As you ask your question, a voice responds. You aren't sure quite where it came from, but you can recognize it as Cassidy's. "You're right, this world is your tutorial. There aren't any other entities here, but that just gives you plenty of room to move around and get used to things. If you have any questions, just ask."

Looking at her reflection in the window, Amber saw she was naked, as naked as she'd been when getting into the EGG pod. Stepping into the closet, Amber looked around and saw all the different clothing she could choose from and smiled. "Wow, I've never had my pick of clothes like this before," Amber said softly, looking at everything.

As you finish dressing, a click can be heard from the door that was previously closed. The voice also makes a repeat performance in answering your questions. "I'm afraid there will be no pausing or inventories. What you carry is what you've got. We tried those features at one point, but the reduced immersion outweighed the convenience according to the testers of the time."

The bow and dagger seem finely made, if simple, and come with nice straps to make carrying them trivial. A new voice answers your latest question. You're pretty sure its accent could appear on the BBC without issue. "Random? Is that really the reputation I've gotten?" You can almost feel the world jump a little as alterations are made to accommodate your request.

"Ooooh, I see. Well then, I suppose that'll be fun. Well in that case, let's go with say... fifty arrows, and twin daggers if that's alright. That way I've got one dagger to fight, and another for cleaning kills, whittling more arrows, and as a backup just in case," Amber said when Cassidy informed her there was no pausing and the like. "I'm assuming though that if I really need to pause for some reason though that I can... surely," she added in a hopeful tone.

"Sorry, I didn't realize that you would take offense to that. I just meant a little randomness can be fun, because it's venturing into the unknown," Amber said to the new voice, unsure of who it was, because it sure wasn't Cassidy. "Let's give this a try then, if that's alright," she went on to say as she chose to start the game up, curious as to what it would be.

Pristine Valley (tutorial) part 3: Home of the Beginning

OOC: Getting tired, and I'm noticing the quality drop. Going to sign off after this.


"Of course. The safeword to end the simulation will be configured shortly, I believe." There were no problems, of course, with taking the desired armaments off the wall.

Through the now unlocked door, another room was found, and it revealed the source of the crackling fire. A stone fireplace held several burning logs, with more stacked beside it for replenishment. Across the room, and to your right, was a door which lead outside. Across the room, you could see what looked like a study, judging based off of the desk and bookshelf. To its left was a kitchen area. To the left of the door you just came through is a small bathroom and shower area.

Pinned to the door is a blank piece of paper, lined at the top with an underlined In Case of Emergency:. That would probably be the safeword configuration.

The second voice cuts in again as you look around the room. "No offense taken, it was simply interesting to learn what people have said about me. I am, as you might have guessed, the AI behind the EGG system. I do much of the design work for our worlds, though I don't often get to speak with people. I believe that you will be able to find a 'quest' or twenty if you do some reading, or you could explore as you wish."

As she noticed the safe word configuration paper on the door, Amber was spoken to by the AI again and looked around a bit, listening to what she was being told. "Aye, that's what I figured you were. I'm Amber by the way. And yeah I'll take a look at the different quests you've got on record and see if there's one I like. Oh and the safe word I want should be... let me think.... Ah, how about a phrase instead, that way it's less likely I'll say it. 'That orgasm sucked'. That sounds like a good phrase for stopping I think, since I did read that this whole thing was heavy on the sexy fun times and stuff," Amber said to the AI with a smile as she introduced herself and thought on the key phrase to use for an emergency exit.

Pristine Valley (tutorial) part 4: The quest

(Three days of Finals left... I misjudged how much the professors were willing to load in to these final days.)

As the words go onto paper, a click can be heard from the main door. It seems that you could leave now, if you wished. Should you do so, a small railed deck would be found, with several small stairs leading to the ground. Behind the house there lays a shallow canyon, where the water you've been hearing falls and rushes on to locations unknown.

The forest surrounding the building seems different from what might be usually seen, wild as though it had never known the bite of an axe. Visibility can't be much more than five meters, and even less than that if you're trying to look into the copious underbrush.


Also visible from the door is an old tome set in the study. It is among several other books, but something makes it stand out. Perhaps the red bookmark? Should you seek its secrets, its pages will lay out in terms as clear as stone the backstory of the world. Perhaps someone who had spent their life studying magic could get more than the absolute basics from this book, but the jargon is thick enough that it may as well be written in a different language.

This world is, apparently, a shard created as an emergency shelter. For whom or from what, you would have no idea if you read the book. The bookmark does mark something of a map. It is massively distorted from what would usually be expected of a map, but you could make out several rivers. They seem to be the strongest lines on the map, and each converges upon the map's center, which is marked by a single word in an unrecognizable script:

Hearing the clicking of the lock on the door, Amber stepped over and through it as she pushed it open, wondering what was beyond the door. Taking in the scenery, Amber took a deep breath and let it out slowly, feeling refreshed at the whole thing and feeling great. When she noticed the tome she immediately went to investigate it.

"Hmm... a map eh... guess I ought to follow it to the center here since everything converges there. And so I can figure out what this big word means, since I'm apparently in game now," Amber mumbled aloud to herself, looking around and deciding to follow said rivers, or the nearest one at least, to the center area to see what was there.

She figured it best to take the tome with her for now, but first she looked back inside the house for a backpack of sorts to carry her extra items she might find along the way in. Once she'd gotten one, she put the tome in and ventured down towards the canyon area to follow the water, if she could make her way down safely that is. If she couldn't, then Amber would attempt to follow it through the woods as best she could for the time being.

Finding a backpack proves easy, there being quite a selection available. The book easily slides into one, letting you keep it with you wherever you may go. The backpack looks like it could feasibly keep water out unless you go swimming with it, probably a good thing.

Looking around, there don't seem to be many places to descend safely, and none of them look to be perfectly safe.

(2d6+4: 10 vs 8) Vines hang from the natural bridge about two-hundred meters from the house, right next to the waterfall. You could move down them slowly and drop a relatively short distance into the water.

2d6+4: 9 vs 9) Well hidden on the cliff opposite the house is what might have been a footpath. It looks rather steep, but from here you think you could traverse it so long as nothing gave way.

(2d6+4: 6 vs 10) That seems to be the extent of the paths down. There's always the forest, at least.

Amber was glad to have found herself a backpack easily enough, and so slid the tome into it. After that she headed out to try and find herself a path to the canyon. Seeing no easy path down to the bottom of the canyon though, Amber decided it safer and better to make her way through the forest instead, where she hoped to find herself a path leading down to the rivers edge instead.

"Well, looks like the forest it is," Amber murmured to herself as she continued towards the forest instead.

Initially, the forest proves trackless, or at the very least nothing is apparent through the undergrowth. Soon, though, it begins to thin. Keeping the sound of the river to your left, you proceed without significant difficulty on a mostly downhill slope.

It is about half an hour in that you notice something that had been bothering you slightly, amidst a slowly growing headache. Even discounting the roar of the river, you haven't seen or heard a single insect or other creature since you set out.

As she made her way into the forest, Amber saw that it was quite dense at first, but soon enough it began to thin out a bit, or at least enough for her to begin making her way towards the sounds of flowing water from the river. When she heard the water flowing to her left, she headed down the hillside of the hill she seemed to be on and began steadily and carefully making her way downwards towards it.

"Wait... something's not right here," Amber murmured to herself after a while as she walked, the sudden realization that she heard nothing about, not birds nor bugs either one, and her head was beginning to ache a bit for some reason though she knew not why. "God... I need to sit down a minute. Come on Amber, clear your head of everything a moment and think of good things. Think of hot naked girls. It might excite you a bit, but it's nice things and it'll help your head feel better... surely," Amber then said aloud to herself, taking a seat on the nearest tree stump or log that was nearby, or barring that on the ground against a tree or on a rock.

She hoped that sitting down for a few minutes might help her head some, but if it didn't then she would press onwards to the river and splash her face with some of the water there.

Though no stumps present themselves, you quickly locate a tree that seems to have been uprooted with makes for a decent seat. Oddly, no moss or anything else seems to be growing on it.

Closing your eyes and thinking happy thoughts does wonders for the headache, leaving it almost completely gone. It doesn't last, unfortunately, as the headache starts making a return as you continue through the forest. Something seems off about it... and its not just the forest being somehow lifeless aside from the trees and some hardy undergrowth.

Fortunately, you find the river without issue guides by the sound of flowing water. You've been traveling for perhaps forty-five minutes now, and you can see the canyon where the river flows, though here it's much less of a sheer drop. You could pretty easily walk down to it from here.

Spotting the uprooted tree, Amber takes her seat to rest for a few minutes. Her headache began to fade thankfully while she thought her happy thoughts, which was good. Her headache came back though as soon as she got up and stopped resting with her nice thoughts. "Damn, stupid headache. Come on now, please stop," Amber murmured to herself as she walked onwards, finding everything about this forest a bit off.

After nearly an hour, Amber heard rushing water again and found the river once more. She walked down to it, and when she got to the edge she cupped her hands and splashed her face with some water to maybe cure her headache, drinking some of it too after that. "What is wrong with this place?" Amber asked nobody in particular as she looked around while drinking some of the water.
