She passed through an informal settlement that sat outside the walls and finally reached the fortress. The gate was open but there was a line. Apparently there was a quarantine in effect. No one knew why but there were rumors that varied between spies being found out to an upcoming attack to a mystical plague. She couldn't get anything official from the guards. What she did learn was that to enter she would need to apply for a permit. It would take a few days which explained the encampment outside. Merchants, mercenaries, and travelers were all stuck outside the gates, waiting for their permits. For the permit, you needed to pay 5 denarii and give your reason to pass through or into fortress. Bothersome.

Instead of joining the line and approaching the gates, Alira melted in to the makeshift camps set up by those waiting for admittance to the city. A few hands had to be greased, costing Alira 8 denarii, but she eventually manage to find both a good target and the probable reason for the quarantine. The reason? They were currently experiencing a series of guerilla attacks on supply trains and there were worries that some of the supplies had been sabotaged or that the merchants had been replaced by enemy soldiers. Humans, mostly, but there were even worries that some of the slaves that were being brought in were actually just biding their time.

Her target was a thin man, a scholar, who had been planning to study the ruins. He wasn't a treasure hunter, like Alira, but he had been known for managing to grab some pretty nice stuff to study. He belonged to some kind of academy and was quite wealthy. If Alira could convince him to let her join in, he could probably bring her in as an assistant. After watching him closely, Alira was astounded to find the human was as thin as he was. He gorged himself during mealtimes, eating more than twice what others were, even with the food prices high due to the blockade. He had some bodyguards, two orcs, one male, one female. Alira learned that the two orcs were husband and wife and were almost always employed by the man. Erik cocked his head. The male orc reached over and looked at the gem carefully. He muttered something and a purple, transparent orb surrounded the magical trinket. He stared for a minute before nodding and pocketing it. He gave a thumbs up. Erik nodded. "Alright, if it is good enough for Char, it is good enough for me! Welcome to the team!" He returned to his meal. The female orc talked to Alira instead of Erik. "We should be getting in within another day or two. Erik was able to pay to expedite the paperwork. My name is Lae." She looked at Alria challengingly. "My mother was raised by a dryad after her parents either left her behind or lost her during a winter."

That very day, in fact, Alira was approached by Lae. "Looks like they were in a hurry. We'll be entering the city soon. I advise you to make sure you've got everything handled out here." When Alira came to their area, she saw that the two orcs were carrying a large amount of equipment. Erik carried nothing and bounded forth. The orcs didn't complain and the load on their backs didn't seem to bother them.

They got a few odd looks as a group as they passed through the city but they were heading for a specific place and got there quickly. Apparently there had been a fight and one side or the other had used some kind of explosive magic, knocking a hole in what looked like a solid floor. The hole was now guarded by a few orcs and a human. Erik presented them with paperwork and, stealthily, a rather hefty bribe and was allowed to pass. Alira found herself with the orcs and Eriks in a ruined room. Much of the area had caved in over the years but she could see that there was still a clear path, or so it seemed.

"Hmmm..." Lea passed some notes to Erik and he consulted them. "Hmm..." He chewed on some tough meat he had purchased. "No, it doesn't look like there is anything in particular that we expect."

The way seemed clear until Astok spoke. Freeze! Alira was able to hold herself still. There are summoning circles placed all over this room. They are... hmmm... earth affiliated. I'm guessing they will summon earth elementals. Here, let me show you. Alira blinked and she saw everything in double for a moment before everything slid together. Several dark green magical circles dotted the room. It would be tricky to get by them. I'm not sure I can deactivate them on the first go. They look well made. I might trip them if I attempt to.

The room had several pieces of rubble that Alira might leap to. On the other hand, the room was badly damaged and Alira had no idea if the rubble would shift under her weight and simply dump her on the ground. It was hard to tell but she thought she could see to exits. One was past a small pile to her right and close by but the other was on the far end of the room and would be harder to get to.

Alira was about to question Astok further, but when the mental barrier fell, she managed to control herself. Still, her thoughts raced with the possible implications. Same category? And Ahael was summoned because... why? I called him? Doesn't make sense!

Distracted as she was, she barely paid any attention to her companions and surroundings, until Astok's mental shout snapped her out of it. His warning caught her with one foot already in the air, ready to take a step. Her instincts and training kicked in just in time, and with a wobble she caught her balance, arms splayed out to the side almost comically. Carefully, she set her foot back down, and listed to Astok's explanation, holding up a hand in warning to the rest of the party.

When the spirit was finished, Alira turned to her companions. "I, uh, I think there are some magical traps placed in the room. We need to watch our step." Quickly, Alira pointed out the locations of the summoning circles. "Stay here for now, I'll go check out the nearest exit. But if I fall, be ready. Most likely earth elementals."

With that, the thief turned and began to move toward the nearest doorway, using the rubble to avoid breaking the circles.
