The potion fully heals Alira, removing the bruising and causing her bones to heal up. The removal of pain was a relief and even her swollen ankle had healed up. However, by the time she had drank the potion and reloaded her weapon, the troll was upon her. It lifted its fist but thanks to Alira's skill with stealth, it didn't know quite where she was and missed its first attack. Alira shot it square between the eyes but the troll still seemed ready to fight, if barely. It was sagging but Alira wasn't going to be able to just escape like she had before.

Why do you insist on making everything so difficult? Are you telling me that you'd rather be completely destroyed by one of my servants than make a minor deal with me? If you are, maybe it would be a better idea to figure out a way to attach to someone else rather than aid you. Hell, having the trolls kill you might be for the best. One of them is bound to pick me up and then I can use them as a more pliable, if less able, host. Tell me why I shouldn't just awaken every troll in this canyon. Alira got the feeling that maybe she had pushed Astok just a little too far this time. She could feel Astok readying a basic spell, one that would amplify his voice. It would probably be extremely loud in this partially enclosed space. However, through her connection, she felt something very important: he was bluffing.

Astok's voice poured into her head, threatening and cajoling even as the troll readied his next attack. Alira's patience was at a breaking point, and she saw no reason to hold back her frustrations. She broke through Astok's tirade with a flash of anger.

Shut it! Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying. Little deals with you will lead me to the exact same place in the end, I'll just have less fun along the way. Not much difference between you and your demons, is there? Alira quickly stowed away her crossbow and drew her sword, keeping a close eye on her lumbering opponent. Astok was silent, either preparing to make good on his threat, or maybe... Alira sensed a flicker of uncertainty across the mental connection. Throwing caution into the wind, she pressed on.

You want to try to kill me? Fine, at least then I won't have to deal with you anymore. Bring them on then... only I don't think you'll do it, will you?

With a snarl, she lashed out at the troll with her sword. If only Astok was this easy to cut....

There was a tremendous flash in the sky, a bright light that caused even the troll to stop to look up. Dammit. The light fell from the sky. The troll kept looking up, oddly, until it began to slide. As in two parts of it, sliced neatly in half, fell away from each other. They began burning to dust, a holy radiance reducing the creature's flesh to nothing. Behind the troll stood a large figure in blue-gold armor, bright white wings extruding from its back. It had cut the troll in half with a cobalt-blue longsword. The helmet had a cross cut into it but Alira couldn't see in the helmet due to the bright light. The figure leveled its sword against Alira. "I've finally found you. You thought you could hide underground? I knew you would emerge. And now you will pay for your crimes against the world, Astok. This time we will not simply seal you away. This time I shall kill you and the world will be rid of you forever."

The longsword was raised, then lowered. The figure seemed confused, looking at Alira for a few moments. "You are not Astok." The bracer on her arm did nothing, said nothing, and had apparently wrapped itself up. Alira could sense no trace of Astok whatsoever.

Alira blinked at the glowing figure in astonishment, stunned at this new development. But you didn't get to be a successful thief without learning how to quickly adapt to new circumstances. So Astok's got some enemies as well as friends from the old days. This should get interesting. Don't you think so? Regretting threatening to kill me yet? A stony silence greeted her question - Astok's presence was completely gone. Would you look at that, scared silent. I like the new guy already.

Looking at the angelic figure in front of her, Alira had to suppress an urge to run. Something about the posture of the thing and the size of its sword told her that would be very unwise move. Well, no refuge but audacity....

The angel's blade wavered but only a little. "Astok's presence was so strong here that I was sure you were him. I will not tell you my name but my title is the Skybound Blade." He looked at Dark Render, then back at Alira, almost doing a double take. "I would accuse you of being in league with him if that blade had been burning your flesh. As it is, the tattoos on your body radiate corrupted energy. I still cannot trust you. Speak true or I shall strike you down. What connection do you have to the dread sorcerer-king Astok?" Apparently the paladin's gift continued to help Alira. His tone had softened but only a little. And, oh yeah, those tattoos. They were getting worse.

"Rasab has been reawakened? That is poor news indeed. And... what did you just say?" He transferred the point of his sword from in front of Alira to the bracer and tapped it. "It does look familiar but it radiates no magic. But if it is indeed Astok..." The sword glowed bright blue and a spark jumped into the bracer, which flared up. Alira could feel Astok's anger... and fear.

"It's been quite some time, angel! Back away!" Astok manifested a version of himself that stood in front of the angel, his face twisted in hate. "You know why you couldn't kill me! That fact is unchanged!" The angels aura darkens, though somehow it didn't stop shining. It suddenly turned to Alria and the sword glowed once more as it cut her in half.

...or at least that's what it should have done. Alira was untouched but Astok was gone. She could feel his presence but it was very faint and when she looked at the bracer, it was covered in cobalt chains. When she moved her arm, the chains didn't budge. The tattoos had disappeared but the corruption remained. The angel clenched his fist. "I am sorry but he is correct. Long ago I sought to slay him. However, he has linked himself with 6 other powerful beings. If he is killed, they receive his knowledge and abilities. Instead of dealing with one man, we would be forced to deal with six demons of incredible strength. I was unable to gain the strength to slay them before. While they have slumbered, I have grown in power. I will track them down and, at the very least, shatter the pact they have with Astok. Those chains should prevent him from influencing you or anything besides his prison. I must go. There is much work to be done." The angel prepared to leave. If Alira had anything to say, now was the time.

Alira didn't even have time to flinch as the angel's sword came around. Astok's visage disappeared from before her, at the same time as his voice in her mind fell silent. Disbelieving and stunned, Alira reached out with her mind, probing for a trace of the sorcerer's presence. The evil spirit was still there, but his influence was barely detectable. Well, things are looking up... Didn't see this coming, did you?

As Alira exulted in her newfound freedom, her unexpected savior turned to leave, and the night elf called out after the angel.

"Hey, wait a second, I.... uh thanks, first of all. You don't know how good it feels to have my mind back, even if he's still kicking around there a bit." Glancing down, Alira noticed that the cursed symbols had vanished from her skin. "Hey! This gets better and better! Listen, if you're going after the demons, here's a place you can start. One of them, called Bakh, has a gambling den set up in a town back in Glassmoor. Hiding in a kids body, the bitch. It sounded like she couldn't jump bodies for a while, but I'd still hurry if I were you."

As the angel made his exit, Alira stood still for a while, a grin frozen on her lips. Turning, she scanned the canyon for Erik, intending to find the man before he had a chance to bring more trolls down on them.

The angel looks back, nods once, then is engulfed in an aura of light. The light pulses, then flies through the air, taking the angel with him. The bracer lets out a muted sense of anger but even noticing it is an afterthought. She feels power building inside but letters formed of blue energy form on the chains and the power eventually abates.

Alira finds Erik nearby. He has passed out, his spellbook still in his hands. He's pretty skinny and not holding too much so Alira is able to carry him out of the canyon without any difficultly. She finds herself on top of a ridge. In the distance, she can see the fortress she came from. It would be a bit of a walk but it goes faster once Erik wakes up and is able to walk. He even had a flying spell that made things go much faster. Once back at the fortress, Erik seemed at a bit of loss but said he knew some people that would be able to help him. He paid Alira 30 denarii for her trouble and left, looking sad.

Following Erik's departure, Alira was left to her own devices for the first time in a long while. She found herself unconsciously preparing for a mental intrusion from Astok, but it never came. The angel's chains held fast and the spirit's influence was no more than a whisper in the back of her mind. Wonder if that will last... he's a tricky one after all

They had reached the fortress at dusk, and by now the light of the sun had grown very dim. Alira blinked at the gathering shadows. Something's off with my vision, it's ... better? To her surprise, the thief found herself able to see into even the darkest of corners with little trouble, the unusually sharp contours of objects popping out of the gloom. Though their colors were still a bit washed out, her night vision was unlike anything she had experienced before. How did this happen? Those markings! The corruption.... Alira realized that she hadn't given much thought to the effect of the demonic energies on her body. She'd heard stories before, but nothing definite... I wonder where I can learn more? Wasn't this place an elven city? Must be some information hidden away in some forgotten library...

Still considering her new ability, Alira sat down to category her loot. Including the large gem, it was quite a haul. There was enough her to significantly upgrade her equipment. Alira set off to find a merchant and a craftsman, locating both quickly within the busy fortress. After haggling a bit, Alira managed to gain a tidy sum for her booty, walking away with and additional 103 denarii in her coin purse. Most of the gains had come from selling the Ruby Dawn. Though reluctant to part with the gem, Alira reasoned that her new night vision made the gem redundant.

At the armor stand, Alira selected a new set of leathers, crafted from giant hide. The extra tough material would greatly improve her defenses, though there were downsides. Trying the armor on, the thief found her movements more restricted and clumsy than usual. Hesitating over the trade off, Alira's eyes caught a garish advertisement painted on the side of a nearby tent - "Enchantment!". A brief stop, and her new giant hide armor now contained a few inserts of chameleon skin at the joints, ensuring the movements would be quieter than ever.

A final stop at the weapons artificer netted her an upgraded crossbow - with an automated clockwork reloading mechanism that would make launching rapid ranged attacks a possibility. Hefting her much depleted coin purse, she moved on.

As she made her rounds, Alira noticed that something was... off about the reactions of the people around her. She seemed to be drawing longer stares than normal. When she lightly bumped into a passerby, the man had apologized so profusely that she didn't know what to make of it. A young man that she smiled at followed her like a lovesick puppy for the better part of a minute before she shooed him off. What is going on?

There was something smug about the feeling from Astok. Again, though, he lacked the influence to even cause the static that she normally associated with their close mental contact. He was just being irritating. Then, when she placed her hand on Dark Render, the blade began to grow hot in her hands. Before she could act, the chains on Astok flashed and it became cool once more.

Putting on a traveler's cloak and putting her hood up greatly reduced the amount of attention she was receiving which was fortunate. She was drawing glances from men who wouldn't be as easily rebuffed. Her "new" looks did, however, make it incredibly easy to get information. The free drinks didn't hurt either.

A cave had been excavated to the east. It apparently contained a dragon's skeleton. It might even contain the hoard a dragon would keep but creatures with dragon-like attributes were preventing any real progress from being made.

A caravan was heading out of Crolia and going through Bardaria to reach the sea. They were looking for guards. It had decent pay.

A strange temple had been found. A lot of the imagery depicted eyes, not all of them human. No one had really decided to attempt to enter the temple yet. It had just been found and anyone who had attempted to enter the temple had never been heard from again.

It was getting late when Alira left the tavern, having gathered as much information as she could. She only made it a few steps before she heard the door open behind her. A quick glance told her that three orcs had filed out after her, all of them looking her way.

The alleys around the tavern were dark enough, but she's didn't want to incite a chase or a confrontation if she could avoid it. If whatever passed for the authorities around her got involved, she was sure they'd see the orcs' side of the matter.

Still it paid to be cautious. Keeping her hand near her crossbow, concealed by her cloak, she looked at her pursuers. "Something I can do for you, lads?"

He was actually the smallest of the three, which was a bit of surprise. Looking closely, Alira could see his features were a lot less orcish than the other two. Maybe he was a half breed. Which made his position as the leader of the group even more interesting. "You were asking a lot of questions in there. Got a lot of stuff for free. You've got a pretty face, I'll admit, but that doesn't change the fact that you just left without paying a single denarii. We figure that, in order to keep things balanced, you're going to have to pay someone and we volunteered to the keep the balance. We won't make you pay denarii but you are going to have to work it off somehow." He smiled lewdly. With her new ocular abilities, she could see that all three were, well, bulging.

The three followed Alria into a large enough alley to perform such a contest. The smallest orc stepped forward while the two larger orcs stayed back. The smaller one took his shirt off and the closer look betrayed details that weren't immediately obvious. Swirls of bluish-green scales occasionally streaked his limbs but were most prominent on his chest. They didn't look draconic, more anguine. His muscles were smooth but extremely dense and when he flexed, he had an extraordinary range. This might be more difficult than she thought. "Alright, let's go." Then they began.

Despite his natural strength, Alira's power and agility meant she would normally easily outclass him. However, his body seemed to be adapted for grappling: his muscles could contract to a startling degree and he seemed to be able to disconnect his joints, allowing free mobility. It was difficult but the orc gained the upper hand for the moment. They leered and the two took a step forward before the smaller one gave them a glare and they stepped back. He grunted "We'll all get our chance."
