Huh. I came into this topic expecting something else. But I'm pleasantly surprised to find some awesome music floating around. Makes me go on the inside.
As far as scores go I don't think everything would be made better by using an orchestra. Case in point, Metroid Prime, specifically

. On its own the music itself really doesn't do all that much for me. But when I play that game and have Samus wandering through snow drifts while bits of ancient technology poke through the landscape the music just fits the situation and pulls me into the game. It's probably why I love the soundtrack for the Metroid series. The music isn't there to stand alone and catch your attention. It creates an atmosphere specifically designed to immerse the player into the world that has been created for them, and I believe orchestral music is far too attention-grabbing to do that. But that could just be me.
