Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: SOPA, PIPA, MEGAUPLOAD, AND THE FUTURE OF THE FORUMS

ACTA is a treaty, not a bill. The US constitution has a provision wherein if a treaty is signed with a foreign country, the congress must enact legislation in order to be in compliance with the treaty (this is only actually the case in about /16th of all treaties signed, though), so this provision is sometimes used to pass otherwise-controversial laws. Make it a treaty, sign without the public knowing, then go "Well, we have no choice but to sign now!". ACTA has been around a while, with drafts continually being circulated for the past couple years in closed-door meetings, and was already signed in October by a number of countries.

Copy of the treaty:

Convenient Wikipedia article:

In an interesting aside about MU, there may be another reason this action was taken now, as well.

The treaty was already signed by some countries. The EU hasn't signed on yet. The protest is against the EU signing.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: SOPA, PIPA, MEGAUPLOAD, AND THE FUTURE OF THE FORUMS

I was just browsing one of the hentai dumper websites and a message at the top of the page said he/she wasn't going to use Uploaded.to (The one that's blocking the U.S) because the download speed for free users is too slow so he/she choose to test out rapidgator which currently isn't blocking the U.S. I kinda laughed at that.

Posting this video and article in two places so that regulars and hopefully hentai section lurkers as well will see this, in case they didn't already know:
Ireland and the EU will apparently be signing the ACTA treaty tomorrow. They need to be told, shown, etc. that this will NOT stand.

It would be extremely ironic if China is left as the only 'free' country after this...

China is not a free country before this signing, hence it cannot be a free country after this. They have one thing that's better than the West; that doesn't make them even remotely free.

Honestly, would you rather have oppression of political speech, or insane copyright laws? Even though they're both bad, one is clearly worse than the other. Try spreading an anti-SOPA type of political activism in China, and see how long you survive in the 'free' world.

WELP, I still don't like ACTA, but at least I understand it a little better now... I think... BRAIN HURT.

Is it just me, or does this seem like the Prohibition period from loooong before in our history when the government tried to ban alcohol? I believe that backfired big time - speak-easies opened up all over the place, and people made their own moonshine (with disastrous results, usually). Eventually, an Amendment was made saying that the ban was lifted.

The government is trying to reign in the internet, which is not only nationwide, but world-wide. Let's see how well they can pull this off once the internet version of speak-easies and all start popping up everywhere as fast, or faster than they can block.

I was being sarcastic, I'll try to be less subtile next time.

Re: ANNOUNCEMENT: SOPA, PIPA, MEGAUPLOAD, AND THE FUTURE OF THE FORUMS

Makes me feel sick. Like, tasting bile in my throat sick. I get through my day maintaining an optimistic outlook by assuming that stuff like this isn't going on in my own back yard. That ACTA bit hit home for me, because they recently discontinued a generic brand medicine I've been taking for years on some bullshit about FDA testing (I'd think maybe 5-10 years taking the medicine without ill effects counts as some damn testing), so now I have to take something more expensive over-the-counter medicine to compensate. And you know what? I don't notice a damn thing different about it. The only difference is the size and shape of the pill and the price (my doctor still needs to sign off on it even though it's over-the-counter medicine, so the "No prescription" thing doesn't really hold here).

... Why am I ranting about medicine here? Whatever. This back-door dealing hogwash is why I can't stand to discuss politics with anyone, because it's just such a depressing topic. I didn't realize until now that we've actually been in a state of emergency that long; how the hell does that even escape people's notice? How does that not become a problem? Except that's just what it is, a problem. Generally I try not to formulate an opinion on controversial subjects if I don't know enough about them to back those opinions up, but I've been eating up information on this subject because the opinion I've been formulating has been one of alarm and disgust, and it keeps getting worse. Even with the brief and tenuous victory, it doesn't feel like it's finished, and what's worse, I feel like I've done about as much as I can do about it.

This has been a surprisingly serious discussion from a porn game forum, gotta say. It's weird.

Well, as has been said by Nunu, it's usually best to keep politics and other heavy subjects off of a site primarily focused on hentai. However, SOPA/PIPA were too big to ignore, and ACTA will open the door for more laws that have the potential to be just as draconian as SOPA/PIPA were.

The biggest problem people have with ACTA, in all honesty, is that it was drafted, passed, and signed in secrecy (at least up until now). To me, that means that either A) the leaders of the world felt that citizens were too stupid to comprehend the treaty, which is not only insanely insulting but idiotic as well, or B) they know the treaty is going to lead to insane laws, and they didn't want anyone to know there was even a treaty that let them push those laws through in the first place.

ACTA itself, though, after reading up on it, isn't IN ITSELF bad, it's the potential for abuse that's most disconcerting.

It was released as a draft mid-2010, finalized in November 2010, officially signed in October last year (by the US, anyway)....not done in secrecy to the point where no one knew this was coming. I remember reading about it in 2008 when Wikileaks leaked something about it, when it was all over Slashdot for weeks, and the subsequent times when actual texts of the treaty started showing up.

There's plenty of bad about it, too. ISPs don't have safe harbor for being "just the tubes" under this treaty, if laws are codified in signatory countries that uphold it. There's a bunch of other concerns too, but that's the main one, as DNS blocking was the main concern with SOPA.

You know, that is the perhaps the most deep and completely relevant summary of this entire storm. Sorry for my massive post last time, was just a means to tell people they have a world of information at their fingertips right now that they should use now in case they lose the right to an uncensored Internet in the future.

The military created the concept of the Internet, but ultimately this digital world became its own entity that only the most recent couple of generations even fully utilize or care to understand. The fight will never be over, because THAT is the nature of Freedom, for any sense. Freedom is never peaceful, because those without peace themselves seek to devour Freedom in exchange for power. Knowledge is also power, so wield what you can to fight for that Freedom. We outnumber the paper-pushers, right? :D

Also, ACTA was never made public in the US -officially- for reasons of "Possible Compromise of National Security". Hmm.

And I'll shut up now and go back to browsing eye-candy. >_<

"Those who deny freedom to others, deserve it not for themselves."
- Abraham Lincoln

"Freedom is never voluntarily given by the oppressor; it must be demanded by the oppressed."

"The more freedom we enjoy, the greater the responsibility we bear, toward others as well as ourselves."
- Oscar Arias Sanchez

Apparently a lot of Megaupload users are planning on suing the FBI for data loss.

Yeah, I actually lost a lot of data that I had uploaded on MU. I don't think I'm upset enough to think of any legal action. Anyway, I'm glad people aren't turning a blind eye to this and that it's been pulled for now.

It depends on whether the data will be there then. FUD from the DoJ, or real deadline for data?
