One of the most awesome things I found since I'm a lurker around here.
Platformer = games that has platforms and viewed from the side, can has complex levels. Also able to back track.
A platformer is simply a game that relies heavily on navigating platforms as part of reaching the goal (heavier focus than say shooting things, but some would argue that it it would just then be an action-platformer). Super Mario 64 is still a platformer despite not being 2d. We usually now designate games as 2d or 3d platformers to make that distinction. Backtracking is not necessary to be a platformer. No one would argue that Super Mario Land is not a platformer, but you cannot move backwards.
Run or Rape if I recall correctly.
