Re: AWMBI - Discussion

I understand that the idea is to reward good rollplaying, my point is that when it comes down to it, Jenn is the one being tested, not me. Limiting your choices for an RPG to what the player is capable of rather defeats the point. I can certainly *try* to give good lines, but if I don't do particularly well it shouldn't be an automatic fail - especially given all of Jenn's applicable skills.

This is a plot-critical NPC who we would have lost if there wasn't another group waiting in the wings to deal with him... whom we might *still* lose in the end because of one "roll" that for I know wasn't even a roll but rather an automatic fail (as the related posts made it sound).

So, if it wasn't an automatic fail, what exactly *was* that roll? 1d10+5(charisma)+2(smooth talking)? Against what? Did I get -1 for bad word choice? -2? -5? -10? -20?

Re: AWMBI - Discussion

Given Joseph's personality... I'd say you were up against 9-12...

On another note by the book's standard, good roleplaying is generally used to just BYPASS the roll completely so... I don't believe any penalty is involved, but simply that you got either an Autofail, or one of the worst rolls possible (like a 1...)

(Yes, I know quoting the book isn't really smart in an argument, but let me play the role of the book tard a tad longer.)

Re: AWMBI - Discussion

Keylo's right in two ways;

I usually tend to shine a bit more light on those that shine light of their own in the role play, I tend to call it, "luck" more than anything else. Not necessarily in EXP as the book states, but, usually without you knowing, I tend to give little rewards to those who role play well.

As well, The two's suggestion of just, "She smooth talks" will have me do two things; I'll do the character's talking, rather than the player, and be less forgiving with the rolls. If she missed she challenge mark by 1, meh, you failed the test. But, even if you missed by a couple success levels, 4, and used your own words to convince the NPC, I might think, "That actually sounds pretty convincing," and give you an adequate success.

The whole point of it is to get the player more involved with the experience, rather than just giving commands to a puppet, and watching the results.

Well yes, but if I'm just auto-failing all my speech-related rolls as it is... the problem here isn't that I sound *more* convincing then Jenn, it's that I'm apparently significantly *less* convincing. Rewarding good words is great, but making words that aren't quite up to par auto-fail (or did I just roll badly? I'd like to know exactly what that last roll against Joseph *was*) isn't so great.

Jenn didn't get a great roll, by any means, but the words used implied a difficultly too high for her current skills to compensate.

(Roll of 4 + bonus of 4 - lack of meaning to Joseph of the name (Director, Aya) 6 Vs. a difficulty of 8)

(The most prominent variable takes place, which was Jenn's method of persuasion at this point)

Re: AWMBI - Discussion

So... what could I have said that wouldn't have gotten me a 0 modifier (70% chance of success) instead of -6 (10% chance of success)?

Or: if I'd just said "Jenn tries to convince him to stay" would it have been "4 (roll) + 4 (bonus) vs 8 (DC) = success"?

No, I said the most important factor takes place, and it'd just be replaced by another if you did that, "Joseph doesn't feel obligated to risk his life to save people who attacked him - 6"

There are negative bonuses within that minus six, Joseph's intelligence stat, his willpower, and the added decision that he doesn't want to help you.

I'd have assumed those were what went into the DC, but that makes a little more sense.

Seems like getting Joseph is, at this point, very slim or impossible. I doubt anyone in Iris's party will be able, or even want, to find Joseph. To me the only way getting Joseph back to the inn, alive, is finding him knocked out or in trouble around the zoo.

Conclusion, fuck Joseph. Back to our former objective. Like... finding the access codes.

I showed up a tad late. Eh, RJ, you did a good job playing as Aya, nice job. I just hope the goddess is not one of those people who punishes her servants for last minute fuck ups.

Yeah. He can damn well take care of himself. Especially since he's still got Melissa's rifle... *mutter mutter grumble grumble* Damn thief.

Poor Burnt. Comes back just in time to see Aya lose to an unlucky (for Aya) dice roll. Still, I'm sure he'll have a better idea of how to play with Aya against the rest of us PCs ("shoot the gun out of her hands"? OMFG. Okay, so Level 5 Pistols does mean she's ridiculously skilled, but still...).

Re: AWMBI - Discussion

Wish granted! I shall set up a meeting where Luna may fuck Joseph at once!
You're right... I'll have Luna fuck Joseph... in the ass with her sword >_>;;

@DeMatt: Level 5 means she's one step away from god class shooter in the book. AKA Black-Cat style shooting...

that still doesn't explain how a pistol bullet has enough physical force to knock a gun across a room, but...

When the person recoils as well from the shot, effectively sending it flying across the room, inadvertently, "throwing it"
