I've noticed a few people had added me on facebook, and also I added 1 or 2 people who were obviously ULMFers.

So assuming you don't plan to be a dick and say anything inappropriate on my wall / link people to this site, here's my facebook, feel free to stalk me / add me.

Re: Facebook

Things like this make me wonder if I should join...Or would, but I refuse to touch the whole "social networks" thing with a 10-foot pole.

Re: Facebook

Due to the anonymity, I'm probably more open about my life with you guys than with anyone else on my other internet lives, however, it is just my thing to keep those lives separate.

Re: Facebook

I joined MySpace because my IRL friends begged me to.

I joined Facebook to vote for the Nostalgia Critic and SpoonyOne in some competition that required an account on either Twitter or Facebook.

I don't use either and people that do scare me.

Re: Facebook

I've noticed a trend of paranoia amongst you, but I can't understand why. For what reason do you all avoid it? I understand if it's simply because you don't want to be on a social network, but I've heard it being made to sound like you would, but it's not safe.

Was this directly intended for me, or just everybody in this topic who doesn't use social networking websites?

Anyway, I'm not paranoid or anything. I just don't want to bother with any of that garbage. None of my IRL friends use Facebook, hardly any of them go on MySpace anymore and I have plenty of ways to talk to my interwebz friends. I don't need Facebook or MySpace for it.

Well, first off, since it was a question and wasn't negative, I don't think that matters, but I did use the word paranoia, which keyed more towards Sin, since she said it too. Although I am curious about your addendum, "people that do scare me"

Fair enough.

Re: Facebook

facebook and the like are pretty much popularity contests. "I have 200 more friends than you do! I get more posts on my wall than you do!" I make an effort to keep people away unless I genuinely like them. Therefore when I made an account on myspace and facebook (deleted each after three months of the former, five or six of the latter) I only ever had like five friends, and constantly would get friend requests from people I hated.

I also don't get the fixation some people have. A friend of mine went through a phase where she had to check her facebook like every five minutes. It was incredibly annoying. I mean yeah there's something to be said for ease of access - you know, you're available to hang out X night and you want to make a general announcement - but you have four hundred people on your friends list and you can't really direct that to a specific group of them. So what's the point? Easier to just chat over instant message or - heaven forbid - pick up the phone (and not to text). The whole thing is unwieldy and awkwardly public, and I really don't understand why people have to check their facebooks once or twice a day.

I hope that made sense. I'm sort of still half asleep and rambling...

It kinda does ramble, but I see what you're saying.

Still, I have a Facebook because members of my family are on the other side of the world. I don't understand people who have to check it daily, and I don't understand people who brag about their popularity.

Aika, I'd add you, but you're bla-I use my account for personal friends and family.

Re: Facebook

Toxic, the Paranoia mostly stems from military briefings about "They will find you and kill yer family" kind of crap.

However, like others have been saying, its just annoying to have people you don't like able to peer into what's going on with your life, and really, is word of mouth and using the phone so damned hard?

That I can understand and I think it's what these social network sites were originally intended for - isolated small groups. But when everybody has four hundred friends, half of whom they've never heard of (because hitting "don't add" is never an option when you get an invite) it gets pointless. Unfortunately everybody I know who uses it does exactly that.

Re: Facebook

I use it for my irl friends for things like movie night or when i wanna hang out or message a classmate.

Usually. But then again, I like to get to know my intertubes people better, and wish that we all lived close enough to be irl friends, lol. That, and friending on facebook makes you guys seem more real to me. No offense :p

Lol You'd all probably hate me IRL and I'd most probably hate you all IRL as everybody I know pisses me off. That includes all my current friends.

Re: Facebook

I have about 60 friends, all of whom I've met personally (with the exception of one, who I've talked to online as well as irl mail for the better part of 5-6 years) and the only reason I check daily is because we usually all play games together, so I constantly check it, if only to see what new moves in scrabble have been done.

As far as the paranoia, I'm (for the most part) comfortable with the amount of filters I can apply to it, making it so no one past my friends can see anything about me, save for the profile picture I usually screw around with. I doubt many people can find me based solely upon my appearance and have even posted pictures of myself for ya'll to see before too. And remember, the anonymity is what keeps me cool with you people, so keep in mind that I don't mind showing you what I look like, despite the fact I really don't know any of you.

Re: Facebook

Well, I keep my facebook as a way to keep tabs on stuff thats happening. Check it like... every 3 or 4 days though...

And I'm not gonna share it. I only add those that I know in some manner or another IRL.
