Re: Games Discussion Thread

I just finished Deus Ex HR. I must say, it was pretty satisfying. The ending wasn't an outburst of epic as Mass Effect 2 was, but I felt a strong pulsating feeling growing when I listened to the final narration for each ending. What I really really really enjoyed about the game was that each augmentation carried its benefit throughout the entire game. Stealth in Fallout 3 New Vegas was pretty shit useless towards the end, since many bosses and monsters could see you anyway. I enjoyed the difficulty of the game as well. I played on the normal difficulty and was a bit surprised to die so easily (I died 3 times in the first encounter, because I went in guns blazing), but I agree with the developers decision. Some game critics said that the dialogue was a bit corny at some points, but I found it to be quite engaging. I especially like listening to Jensen reason with his debate partner/s.

All in all I am so happy I purchased this game.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Space Marine is out. I've powered through about half of the campaign, and I'm really enjoying it. From what I've read, it's very faithful to Warhammer as a whole.

DETAILS, BY GOD: On anything but the hardest difficulty melee is the way to go. This is a game that looked at cover based games and said "Go fuck yourself." It then looked at regenerating health and found it wanting. You get a small rechargeable shield, and a much larger pool of health. The only cover you get is anything tall enough for you to stand behind, as there is no crouch button. Your health will never regenerate over time, and the only way to get it back is to wade into melee and execute an enemy. That's right, endanger yourself to get yourself to safety, because you're nine feet tall and wearing power armor. Also, british accents everywhere, so there's that.

EDIT TWICE!: The multi-player is fun as hell, though it suffers from the usual frustrations of being a starting player in a game with level-based unlocks. It soes suffer from an apparent lack of maps, and it only has two game modes, but rumor has it that's being worked on.

Short form: If you're into 40K, this is probably a thing you'll love. If you're into shooters, it's a thing you'll probably enjoy.

@ newbie, cool 0.o I was thinking about getting it, but atm, I'm kind of broke. It's like the first game I really wanted since march releases earlier this year.
btw does the action feel clunky? or very smooth?

It feels pretty smooth to me. They've managed to make it smooth, while still putting across how much these guys weigh. The only point I have solidly against this game is a lack of options in combat, but I may even be wrong: You have four guns, your melee weapon, melee stun, grenades, a dodge roll, and a sprint. Generally the pattern is to shoot until you can't, then wade into melee and commence to murdering folk the hard way. There are likely youtube videos of gameplay at this point, check there for evidence of smoothness.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Er...I haven't played DX: HR in about a week now, but I have a quick question about a particularly dangerous-sounding decision if someone could answer it for me.
(Spoilers incoming, people - don't read if you don't want.)

The Glitch has just happened, and I have the option to get my biochip replaced at the LIMB clinic in Hengsha. Thing is, after all the information I picked up while working my way through the Tai Yong Medical facility earlier in the game, I have a horrible sinking feeling that replacing it would not be a good idea. Would I be correct? Simple yes/no is all I ask for, no need to spoil me with details.
Yes you would be correct. I personally replaced it, but after hearing your side, I want to go back and not replace it. It would be cool if it had a different outcome.

Not entirely sure if this is the right place to ask, but I figure it has the best chance of finding someone who has had to deal with the problem before.

Anybody know how to connect a DS to a network that is using a newer encryption than the DS knows how to handle? Is there a way to hard-wire it, or do i need to go buy one of those USB wi-fi thingies just for the DS?

Depends what model of DS it is. If it's the older DS Phat/DS Lite then you'll most likely need a Nintendo wireless connector, though if it's a DSi/DSi XL you'll have to switch your internet to WPA I believe. It's either that or the other one, can't remember what it's called though. If you're running on a 3DS then it can connect to both of them.

It's good to know they made Space Marine fun. Though, I've gotta say as far as the table-top goes, space marines have got to be one of the worst melee armies out there. Granted you're probably playing as one of their 'Heroes'.

I really like the 40k universe, it's like... what if humanity found a way to NOT suck, but then ended up sucking anyway because they were too stupid to store their information in multiple places (on EVERY world). Oh, and machines with spirits you have to appease before using them = worst handicap you can give humanity.

Sure, the armies turn into ultimate badasses, but personally if I'm around in the 41st Millenium, I'd rather be a Necron. At least they have a solid plan of race relations unlike everyone else, who'd work with a person they dispise if they can fuck over a greater threat. And sadly of the greyest is the 'heroes', the Imperium.

Even still, the 40k world is a rich place in both story and philisophical proddings. I may pick up Space Marine later and see if they did the setting justice.

Figures. i had an original DS and a DSLite, so neither one was working with the kind of security we have on our network. my roomate being in college for a network security course, and the one who pays the internet bill, he wasn't willing to change the kind of security to one that will work, because it's 'less secure that way'. So I bit the bullet, traded in twenty games or so, and got a 3DS. Seems like it's working now. Is that update for the internet browser out yet, or does it say 'later' for everyone?

Next question(s). Does anybody have the 2011 YuGiOh game, and wants to trade me some Alien cards that I don't have access to yet? bloody stuck on like the second chapter, and I can't seem to make a deck to kill this guys' zombies. i know my old deck from the 2010 game could do it, but i cant tell if i can trade between them. Anyone know and/or can help?

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Wow, I could never trade in that many games. Hell, I'd only trade in a game if I really didn't like it. And unfortunately I can't help you there, don't have the game in question. Didn't even realise they still made Yugioh games.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

i generally only make a trade-in every two years or so. i build up a lot of games that have no replay value to me, and some that have no first-play value either. a bunch of the ones i traded cost me a dollar or three when some movie stores went out of business a year or so ago, traded in for 8s or 10s, still in the original wrapping.

yeah, i pick up new yugioh games when they come out for two reasons: They're one of the few portable games that take me long enough to beat that they're actually worth the cost of buying, and i occasionally get a need to play the damn things, but i dont know anybody else around that still has cards.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

wouldn't it be better to sell your games half.com or ebay or something? from my experience trade-ins are not very worth it in terms of cost. Granted, not all games will sell well, but in general.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

I could probably get a better profit off them if i tried selling them online, yep. but even ordering online seems to be such a hassle that I'd rather not try it. I tend to get profit from games i didnt want in the first place, and getting anything for games i've loved for two years is really just a bonus, so i don't feel like I'm missing out on much.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Trade-in vs Ebay depends on the game. Sometimes you get more for a trade-in than for Ebay because it's a shitty game nobody really wants, but the store pays you a percentage of what it's selling for in-store.

Also, like Shrike said, it's just easier to walk into the store and do a trade-in.

I was playing online with a couple of friends of mine who both play the tabletop and read the books, and the only difference they mentioned was that some liberties were taken with the weapons for balance purposes, such that chaos has weapons it's not supposed to. So evidently it's pretty faithful.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

If space marine does well then hopefully they'll release another game. I'd like to play as an Imperial guardsman, sure SM are badass but they're so modified they're barely human anymore. As a guardsman moving up the ranks, there's so much more room that you can use to develop the character both in terms of abilities, and personality. Honestly I can't imagine a SM haveing a mentality of anything but 'I kill the enemies of the Imperium, and one day I will die in the emperor's name'.

OH AND THE EMPEROR! That's the funniest joke of all in the 40k universe, all these fuckin morons have to do is pull his damned life-support plug and humanity could rise up to it's former glory once more with his re-incarnation. But INSTEAD they SACRIFICE thousands, maybe millions of lives DAILY to keep it going!

Then you must not be very familiar with the fluff.
