Re: Games Discussion Thread

Also, if you are after space dogfights, I CANNOT recommend Moon Breakers (Free on Steam, or you can play it in-browser via Chrome) enough. The ship growth feels right, and although I do disagree on the 'free play' prices for ships (Unless yer boosting, the prices are quite a bit steep :/), playing through Steam equals a few nice DLC bundles for a 20% discount from the standard HE-3 (the Pay currency) prices. I also put up a nice guide on the Steam Forum to get people started. All and all, if you liked the space combat sections of Star Wars Battlefront, or just like off-rails space shooters and don't got vertigo, I really suggest ya give it at least a small spin. After all, can't beat the price to try it.
Moonbearkers is indeed damn fun.

Munchkin/obsessive's tip: find a time when nobody's playing, start a destroy-carrier mission (broadside is the best for this) and, after learning the tricks needed to fight turrets in the F3, take the whole carrier out by yourself. Net gain of 7400 Cred. (said tricks are: you need to dumb-fire a missile as you go in, so that the turrets target the missile instead of yourself. Loop the protrusions at the four corners of the ship, taking advantage of the slow turn-rate of the turrets to destroy the two that keep popping up. Do this for all four protrusions, then take out the turrets on the top/bottom as well as the side; this only requires smart use of boosts. Once all turrets are dead, kill yourself by ramming the ship, swap to the bomber and have at the carrier. Keep in mind that the bomber's nukes have a minimum range of about 1000m; if you're too close they won't prime. If you’re good, you can do this without dying, and it’ll probably only take a bit over 10 of the round’s 15m.)

Second Tip: Corkscrew by holding left/right and aiming off-centre. this can potentially make you harder to hit, which can help immensely in jousting situations. I've yet to really have much of a go with it, but I saw someone else using it to seemingly great effect. Of course, that person was also lagging all over the place, making them hellish to hit anyway...

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Loved star wars battlefront, a couple of the few games that seemed to be developed for multiplayer but ended up being fun for solo as well.

I did enjoy the space levels, but if I remember correctly, unfortunately there wasn't a great radar system so I'd end up not knowing if there were enemy fighters flying around or where they were.

I don't know, the first metro had some pretty major flaws. I mean why was most of the game spent fighting nazi's for no reason and why where the big bad alien things not made out to be big or bad?

Because I don't think the alien things were good or evil. The Nazi's... well it's hard to argue for them being good. That was my guess anyway. Still have to read the damn book.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Spoilers and explaining from Book & Game. Don't wanna find out DO.NOT.CLICK!!!

First off, they are called "Homo Novus" and they are no alien. They are people who had an ungodly amount off radiation and did not die. Take it as Fallouts "Ghouls". And they aren't really evil, They have been trying to contact the humans in hope of helping eachother rebuilding the world before the war, but their only way is through people's minds and humans aren't strong enough for it, so many of them died. VDNCh took it as a mutant attack. Artyom was one of the few who actually survived the mind visit but he was also the one who understood in the end their true intentions. But in the book, he realised to late and the "Dark Ones" was destroyed.Killing probably their only way to rebuild the world. Of course it was very weak endings in the game and did not have the same impact as the book.

As for the soldiers, the game must of course have gameplay, the book did not have much combat.
"The Communists is pretty much paranoid from invaders and would shoot travelers who did not have right passports. Also you did have to kill them in the bridge level because you were an escaped convict and an extra passenger. The " Russian Nationalists" (That's what they are.) would of course shoot you on sight because you came from the red's side. Both want you dead because they believe you were a enemy spy and stuff like that.
In the book, which he was arrested by the Nationalists was because he shoot a guard and was immediatley accused for spying, propagande and inside work against the "russian race"

Metro 2033 is about Artyom and his quest to destroy "The Dark Ones" while finding humanity's ways of adapting and surviving in the Metro.

Just my cent, my second cent is yet to be found.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

most of those things i know, but the problems remain in the games depiction of events despite that.

the dark ones are briefly mentioned to be scary at the start of the game and then just come across as misunderstood all the rest of the way, i didn't manage the good ending so my character KILLED THEM FOR ME even though it was patently obvious that they weren't evil.

The nazi's are mostly about labels, it is cliche to fight nazi's so they come across as being thrown in their just because, i do not understand the culture appropriately for this to be anything more than that. playing a game through should be all the information required to understand who i am fighting.

The communists actualy had some form of characterisation so they were fine.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

I actually enjoyed the gameplay of metro, everything made you feel like the world really was over, from scrouging for supplies necessary to survive on the surface to using weapons that were cobbed up pieces of crap.

The story was quite weak as you've mentioned, and I honestly couldn't find any saving grace to it. I mean, why couldn't the 'Dark Ones' just write a letter? " We don't want to kill you, we want to save everyone! We can't talk anymore so we have to write letters to you, sorry :( "

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Is it just me, or are the multiplayer servers in ME3 just empty all the time? I mean, there's next to nothing going on tonight, and they released a new DLC today.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Is it paid DLC? Not that it really matters all that much, tbh I got bored of the multi a while back and stopped playing it. Even cheesing gold on FBW with geth doesn't get credits fast enough for me to unlock stuff so I said fuck it I'll go play something fun.

Basically it's too grindy and not enough fun after a month or so.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

It is free. You get two Vorcha (Soldier and Sentinel), two male Quarians (Engineer and Infiltrator) and two Ex-Cerberus troops (Vanguard and Adept). Also three new guns and two maps, just like with Resurgence. There will actually be a new 3-6-10 mission mode in it where you have to carry stuff from point A to point B.

I've only unlocked the new shotgun, which basically works like a flamethrower, only with electricity. It's pretty badass against geth.

Skyrim's first expansion gets its first trailer. Vampires are finally being handled with seriousness in the world of Elder Scrolls, and Crossbows finally make their return. Damn...

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Warning: Age of Empires Online requires Games For Windows Live, and potentially Steam if you choose to get it through that(which I recommend, as you can skip MS point bullshit by purchasing DLC directly through steam instead). You have my full understanding if this is enough to make you go "Well fuck THAT, AM OUTA HERE".

  1. Online RTS
  2. 4 Civilizations
  3. Freemium
  4. Summer Patch
  5. Final Words

1) Online RTS?
Yes, Age of Empires Online is an RTS, and also an Online Game. You have a persistent Capital City which you can decorate and build in, which also have a few important buildings you'll revisit time and time again such as the Palace(Tech Tree), Gear Hall(Equipping Units), the Arena(No-Profit PvP VS Friends) and a few other things.

Theres different areas to visit in the game, such as Argos(Level 20+ Universal Quest Hub), Crete(For those with the Crete Defense DLC), Cyprus(Level 35+ ish Universal Quest Hub along with Skirmish DLC), and of course your Civilization-specific quest areas(Unless you are Persians).

There is a few channels available both outside and inside matches that are the bog standard MMO channels: General, Trade, Looking For Group. You will never -see- a player unless playing co-op with them though. Or paying a visit to their capital city, but even then, you just check their city out in order to mock them for their poor decoration skills.

2) Four Civilizations?
Yes, there are four Civilizations available to play in the game, with more coming further down the road. Three of them that you can test out for free, but one requires purchasing to even play at all(Persians).

The Greeks) They are the all-around stable, ready-for-anything civilization boasting sturdy infantry, powerful cavalry, and devastating ranged units. They even have a broad variety in naval and siege units at their disposal. The Greeks are the go-to civilization if you want a flexible civilization to play as. Their capital is located in ancient Greece, and their main quest leads them into Troy later on.

The Egyptians) They have fairly weak infantry/ranged units ontop of a poor selection of these, so poor in fact, that their Barracks and Archery Range were combined into one building. The Egyptians strength lies in their cavalry, including camel riders, chariot archers, war elephants and elephant archers. They have a wide variety of naval units along with some siege units. They are very focused on a stable economy, and age up by building temples to Ra, Set, and Ptah. Each of these also provide a priest unit with different roles. Their capital is located in Egypt, and later their main quest leads them into Nubia and Libya I think.

The Persians) These are primarily focused on PvP, but also boast a powerful and varied range of units much like the greek, with plenty unit variety in infantry, archers, cavalry, naval and siege categories. Their iconic unit is the Immortal, an Infantry unit that also serves as an Archer. What differiates the Persians from the other civilizations, is that they have no campaign to quest through! Instead, they start at level 20(out of 40), and get to head into the Argos quest area right away.

The Celts) The race that I play myself! The Celts are heavily infantry focused, boasting the most infantry variety, poor selection in ranged units(but the ones they have are pretty stable), the worst cavalry selection ever, a SINGLE naval combat unit(albeit it is a very strong one), and their siege equipment consist of hulking brutes lugging around trees or chucking off stones(Both of which are fairly weak compared to the siege units of other civilizations). They also have two priest units, the Druid that heals in combat, and the Augur that can sacrifice sacred deers for a global boon to your military units. The Celts sport low-health, high-damage, and often high-speed, military units fit for harassing and raiding. Their campaign quests takes them from Celtica to Thrace, and their questlines have been praised as some of the best ones in the game to date.

I apologize for my bias towards the Celts, they are the only ones I've played extensively, and thus know the most about.

3) Freemium?
The game, while free to pick up and play to try it out, will require some payment if you want to get the most enjoyment out of it. Who woulda thought? Specificly, there are a few differences between "Free" and "Premium" civilizations, not to mention "Pro". Of course, theres also non-civ DLC to purchase, such as the "Defense of Crete" and "Skirmish" 'Booster Packs', which unlock new game modes. IE Skirmish Booster is regular old playing VS the AI, up to four of em, with up to three friends(and you!) against them. Defense of Crete sums up as "thirty minutes of surviving wave after wave of enemies to get some random loot". Also decoration packs for -decorations-. Which you gotta purchase for ingame currency after unlocking with real world currency... I. What?

Free) These civilizations can play up to the max level, but are restricted to wear green equipment, can't use Star Tech, can't use Advisors, restricted to 2 Item Storage Buildings, restricted to 1 Crafting School, and can't play Ranked PvP, and likely a few other things I forgot. But hey. At least you can play from level 1 to 40!
Premium) These civilizations can use all gear qualities(Green, Blue, Purple, Orange), Advisors(Providing benefits as you age up in matches, some gives new units to produce), Star Tech(Special talent tree unlockable benefits), up to 5 item storage buildings(and not restricted to just 12 slot ones either, these are essentially 'inventory bags'), two crafting schools(Not that crafting is of any use at low levels), and Ranked PvP(Essentially 'Gearless' PvP, unavailable to Free civs which could use it the most)
Pro) Currently only the Persians. All the Premium benefits along with starting at level 20. Likely resulting in no campaign quests being available though.

4) Summer Patch?
In ten or so days, 12th of June, is the scheduled day for the Summer Patch, meant to overhaul many things with the game. Including the Tech Trees, Unit Balance, along with providing new endgame content, it will also include an overhaul how the ingame special currency "Empire Points" will be used, which will be used as cash bought currency, that is also earnable ingame. These Empire Points will be used to purchase DLC, such as Premium/Pro civilizations, Booster Packs such as the Skirmish or Crete Defense DLC, not to mention used to buy individual vanity/decoration items ingame.

I believe its been said a Premium/Pro Civilization will cost around 900 of these Empire Points, and that people can earn about 1000(Casual) to 1600(Hardcore) EP per month through endgame questing. There will also be some EP gains as you level up what I've gathered. I have also read that people that started playing AoEO before the Summer Patch hits, will get 500 or so Empire Points for free, a nice boost if you do not wish to spend a dime on the game but still want to try it out.

5) Final Words?
Please play with me. ;_;

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Looks good, yeah, but I'm reserving judgement of the game 'til after I've played it. On the one side, no more Bungie, so it may suck. On the other hand, it's the first one Bungie hasn't worked on, so maybe new blood will keep it fresh.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

So E3 happened, or is happening, I dunno. But so far everything I've seen about Assassin's Creed 3 looks great. Naval Combat! Ship to ship! Cannons! The trailer was also pretty cool.

Also impressive was a game called Watch Dogs; set just far enough into the future that not-facebook is attached to everything and the city runs on an OS, it is basically almost Shadowrun with no magic whatsoever. If that makes sense. Looks really cool.

No zombies, but damn this looks pretty good. I'm almost tempted to pick up a PS3 just for this.

Also, still looking forward to the new Medal of Honor, if only because they're displaying Canadian flags in the trailer.

Dawnguard DLC looks like its going to be the shit. Kinda disappointed though that the vampire lord's wings won't actually make you fly just hover but everything else (including the mentioning of the new vampire and werewolf perk trees) is going to make alot of things pretty damn nice.

Re: Games Discussion Thread

Only if they remove the bullshit hard level cap. My character's at max level, how am I supposed to get those perks? I shouldn't have to start another game to get them, and I certainly shouldn't have to go get a trainer and reduce my level.
