Any focusing caster is a dangerous one. And concentrating fire on one target will take it down faster, leaving us with only one enemy to deal with.

(B) Leave Kappa's to the sea farer, and spinners to, uh... Byakuren.

Re: Touhou CYOA - Second edition

(Hmmm, okay. Still, I intend to get this CYOA finished as we are not too long a distance away from that goal, so all votes are very much appriciated from this point on. Not that they weren't earlier...)

Mid-flight, Byakuren motions Murasa to close towards her briefly. "Murasa, let us focus on the spinner girl! She's trying to affect the entire battlefield with some kind of curse, don't let it happen!" she instructs the seafaring youkai captain, both of them switching their attention primarily on Hina and evading Nitori's attacks to the best of their abilities. This proves to be a good strategy to go with as their concentrated effort makes Hina drop out from the battle fast, the girl being unable to manage both maintaining the curse and evading two determined attackers. Once she retreats, Nitori too quickly falls to the two superior combatants facing her, giving Byakuren and Murasa their first victory quite easily.

As the teams walk out, Rinnosuke announces the winners and gives out his consolations to the dropped team. "Looks like the bad luck wasn't strong enough to deter these two, huh? Practise hard now, Hina, Nitori. It was a pleasure for the audience, and myself, to see you two here again. Better luck next time, and congratulations for the winners!"

"That was barely a warmup. Hopefully the next opponents give us a bit more challenge, this'll be boring if all of them are this level of skill." Murasa expresses her opinion, as she didn't even resort to using her huge anchor in the fight. "Better not settle in that mood, Murasa, my friend. There's a lot of scarily powerful beings out there...." Byakuren thinks, remembering some of the beings she's met during the course of her travels. As they settle down to rest for the next match, Byakuren gets a reminder about all those beings as she witnesses Mokou and Keine on the field next. Keine's expression looks a bit sad, and Byakuren notices why as their opponents are two of her students. This battle lasts for barely 2 minutes, Mokou dropping both little ones in a heartbeat. As the wait for the next battle to come, Byakuren gets to see many familiar faces on the field. Yuugi and Parsee, Sakuya and Meiling, Tewi and Reisen, Cirno and Letty, even the two shrine maidens, Reimu and Sanae have teamed up. Among the teams, there's some that she's not met. A fox and catgirl team, another catgirl with a winged companion, two winged girls with strange hats and shoes. None of the truly powerful seem to be there though, no Suwako or Kanako in any teams. Before she manages to sigh in relief, Byakuren's ease of mind is taken away when she sees Remilia take the field with another girl. This blonde girl seems to be younger than the mistress of the mansion. Their battle is impressively one-sided, Remilia just floating there in a sitting position as the other girl tears down the opposition within a matter of seconds.

After plenty of rounds, Byakuren and Murasa get called in to continue on the next round. They now face a pair of swordwielders, one Byakuren remembers meeting briefly at the mountain, the girl with cute doggie ears and a huge sword. The other one is a new face, a serious-looking one with a silver bowl cut and a green dress, bearing two swords and accompanied by a floating translucent sphere. They seem to be having difficulties co-operating, exchanging cold remarks with each other as they wait for the battle to start.
"Now, round number 2 starts with this battle! Despite their differences, their skill with blades earned them a spot at the second round. Better watch out or you'll not see the attack coming, it's Momiji Inubashiri and Youmu Konpaku in a somewhat unconventional team."

"Hmmm, melee combatants. This could be bad..."

A. Keep your distance, focus on Youmu

B Keep your distance, focus on Momiji

C. Send Murasa to melee range, focus on Youmu

D. Send Murasa to melee range, focus on Momiji

A

Youmu is better with a sword, at least in my opinion. Fighting her at close range probably is a bad idea - an anchor could have an advantage, since she'd be unable to parry it (mass and all), but the half-ghost is probably a bit too fast to be hit.

A) Take them out from afar, using Murasa as a cover until we charge up our powers.

A. Play it safe and go long-range, weaving occassionally into mid-range to score a more accurate shot (just remember to get back after you shoot). Keep away and nail them with our best when we've gathered enough energy.

Re: Touhou CYOA - Second edition

Going through the battle quickly in her mind, Byakuren gives Murasa her orders for the fight before they take flight. "Now is the time to use that anchor of yours, shield us with it. I'll gather my focus in your shadow and give them a few hard barrages to deal with. Any attacks you decide to throw at them, focus on the dual wielder." The captain agrees to follow along, trusting Byakuren's better judgement over her own. "Let's go!"

Once the fighting begins in earnest, Byakuren knows she picked the right target first as Youmu seems to have some sort of time-slowing power in her command. The girl pretty much has Murasa on the ropes by herself, as the seafarer is hard-pressed to keep up with Youmu's swordplay under the effects of the slowdown. Byakuren is forced to delay her stronger spells, needing to release minor danmaku in order to fend the bladewielders off them. While she looks impressive wielding her huge sabre, Momiji isn't too big a contributor to the fight, her skills being just a little bit over average. It's pretty much Youmu fighting by herself as the two can't find their will to co-operate with each other. Byakuren catches this fact, changing to a slow, wear-down style, which eventually makes Youmu drop out from the fight as Momiji is easy to avoid. Afterwards, Momiji is easy pickings for the two powerful fighters, as the wolf tengu doesn't manage to break through Murasa's steely defense.

A bit worn out from the fight, the pair exit the arena once their victory has been announced. They go to have a bit off rest before the next fight, meeting with Shou to confirm their situation. "Looks like we might be facing each other if both of us manage to win against the next teams." the tiger youkai explains to them, as she's been paying attention to the order of battles. "But... I fear how we'll manage the next pair, they've dominated others easily enough..." Shou goes on, casting her gaze into the sky for a while before shaking her head. "No, we can take them. And then, we'll face you two for the deciding battle of our little competition. Get to the finals... Maybe win this thing."

But Shou's musings are cut short as Byakuren and Murasa get called back in once more, to advance towards the next round. Giving the tiger youkai a pat on her shoulder, Byakuren assures she won't lose, quite eager to face Shou's team to have some finality. With that said, she strides back to the arena, confident about their coming match. Their opponents are an interesting pair, a beautiful, mature-bodied blonde woman in a long dress and tabard, bearing a mop cap with two elevated portions on it. But the sunburst of fluffy tails behind her is this one's most notable feature. Her golden eyes scan Byakuren's group while she pets her partner's head, making the small, red-dressed catgirl smile under the gentle caress.

"And this is the match to signal the start of round 3! Our newcomer team's been going strong, but this is where it might get tricky. Byakuren Hijiri and Minamitsu Murasa will face a strongly-bonded pair here. Some say she's the strongest of youkai beasts, which has been at least partially proven by her impressive record in the past tournaments. This is a woman who can fulfill most battlefield roles with her impressive skills, the tactician of House Yakumo, this is Ran Yakumo and her shikigami Chen!"

"Hmmm, this is indeed tricky. This Ran does have an impressively strong power aura about her..." Byakuren thinks, changing glances with the fox-woman.

A. All-out attack, focus on Ran

B. All-out attack, focus on Chen

C. Defensive style, focus on Ran

D. Defensive style, focus on Chen

Ran is a bigger threat, but there is one thing we have to consider... Chen is her shikigami. She can draw power from her master and help out with combo attacks, but she's not that special by herself. We need to stop them from making combined assaults, so it's best to target the weaker link, but all-out offence may be too risky. Plus, without Chen, Ran won't be able to use one of her spells.

Also, this might result in a "CHEEEEEEEEEEN!" scenario. I suspect that some of you know what I'm talking about.

Hmm... if we tear Chen to shreds in the blink of an eye Ran might have a CHEEEEN! moment.

B) Because breaking cute things is fun.

It's extra stage midboss time! It feels mean, but Chen must fall if we're to overcome Ran. There's no room for recklessness here though. (D)

D.

Chen is cute and all, but she has to be taken out. Chen is the weakest link of the team, but she and Ran make a very fearsome pair. Take out Chen, and we can hope to see Ran's performance fall.

Chen must be taken down, but we can't take unnecessary risks. Keep on the defense and focus on Chen.

Re: Touhou CYOA - Second edition

"We'll keep going with the same strategy as before, but I'll hold back on attacking as well and focus on defense and avoiding attacks. As mean-spirited as it sounds, aim your attacks at the catgirl. We'll need any edge there is to defeat this Ran, she is impressively powerful and wise in the ways of combat." Byakuren passes her instructions to Murasa prior to the fight. They look to the other side, where Chen and Ran are having a little tactics swap of their own. Soon enough, all four contestants are sailing a few dozen feet over the ground as they commence the battle.

With the pairs facing against each other, Ran starts the battle by placing a hand on Chen's head, closing her eyes and starting a spell. Before Byakuren or Murasa can interfere, Chen starts to glow with a golden light, moving much faster than anyone they've met till now as her master's power flows into the little catgirl. With a mad boost towards the opposing team, she curls up to a ball mid-flight, starting to spin along the way as she aims at Murasa. Murasa can barely hold against the catgirl's assault as she slams against the captain's anchor, pushing her back with the force of the impact. Quickly catching a glimpse of the attack's true purpose, Murasa manages to block off the danmaku that Chen released in the wake of her rush. Ran weights in her attacks as well, using precision lasers instead of usual danmaku swarms, aiming her attack at Byakuren to keep the mage away from her partner.

Sensing the attempt at divide and conquer tactics, Byakuren switches on the offensive, moving towards Murasa to aid the captain in her resolute defense against the powered-up Chen. With a few quick incantations, Byakuren manages to push the catgirl away for a brief moment as she fires some smallish torrents at her. "Chen! Watch out, they'll attack hard if you back off!" Ran can be heard shouting from the distance. But her warning comes a second too late as Murasa pushes forward, hurling the massive anchor at Chen. With a resounding clang, the anchor connects squarely against the catgirl, taking her out with one well-aimed strike. "NO! CHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEN!" Ran shouts out, quickly flying out of combat to grab the falling catgirl. She manages to catch Chen before the girl hits the ground. Lowering her little shikigami to the ground with greatest considerable care, Ran takes a brief look over her shikigami. "Ran-shamaaaa..." is the only thing Chen manages to say before losing consciousness, a small trickle of blood visible on her forehead.

Lifting the little catgirl to her arms, Ran calls out at the two opponents still looking down at them, waiting for the battle to continue. "You two win this one. I can't leave Chen like this for long." With these words as her final take on the battle, the fox-woman turns her back on the two, tails swishing slightly as she leaves the arena with Chen. "What is this? The mighty Ran Yakumo has a soft spot in her heart? People, give this woman some respect, her caring for the shikigami is mightier than her desire to win. I wish you better success next time, and a quick recovery for little Chen!" Rinnosuke's announcement echoes across the surrounding plains, with cheers all around wishing the fox-cat pair their best.

Standing somewhat forgotten in the arena, Byakuren feels a pang of guilt for making Murasa attack Chen. The two of them leave in silence, both feeling bad about what just happened. They head back to the resting areas, keeping quiet and simply resting to prepare for the next battle. "So, it'll be us versus Shou and Nazrin..." Byakuren ponders, trying to get the guilt away from her mind.

Their moods don't lighten any after Shou comes over to them, looking completely depressed. Not saying anything, she sits next to Byakuren, a frown on her features as she leans on her arm and sighs heavily. "So... let me guess... You two... Lost your match..." Byakuren asks, Shou's brief nod answering her question better than words could at this moment. Before they can exchange further words, the call goes out for Byakuren and Murasa to take the field for the fourth time. Patting Shou on the shoulder, the magician promises her to win this thing and bring home the glory.

As soon as they enter the arena, Byakuren takes a look who the are facing. Her courage falters a bit as these two are both familiar figures from some time back. "Sakuya... and Meiling." Despite having faced a powerful presence like Ran during the last round, Byakuren gets more jittery at the thought of facing these two. Meiling is a brutally strong fistfighter, easily a match for both her or Murasa if they came to blows with each other. She is dressed in her usual green dress, but not the undershirt, leaving the girl's lightly-muscled arms exposed. Sakuya was something of a mystery to her though, the maid handled all sorts of knives with aplomb and was deadly accurate with them. She had some other power in her as well, the episode in the kitchen coming back to Byakuren's mind. She keeps her maid dress on even in a batle like this. "This battle will begin the fourth round, and boy do we have a good one ahead of us! These two servants have been keeping the top spots on many past tournaments, their strong teamplay making short work of most opponents as they fall under fist or blade. Some suggest their team power comes from long years spent in the same household, more wild rumors suggest it's an intimate relationship between them! Never has there been a more potent combination of gate guard and maid, it's Hong Meiling and Sakuya Izayoi!"

"Should I go easy on them, Sakuya-san?" Meiling says to her partner as she flexes her fingers, audible cracks coming from her hands as the chinese youkai prepares for the coming test of strenght. "No, we take this seriously. It's already past the halfway, there's two other fights after this." Sakuya replies, drawing a trio of knives from both thigh holsters she has.

"Ohhh dear... This is bad, really bad...."

A. Fight them offensively

B. Fight them defensively

C. Fight them some other way (comment your personal suggestion how they should fight)

Re: Touhou CYOA - Second edition

C) Fighting them head-on is pure suicide as both have little to no weaknesses, using some sort of trickery to defeat them might be the only choice.
Challenge Meiling to a formal fight of Rock Paper Scissors and force her to resign that way.
As for Sakuya, either somehow use Flandre or Remilia as a distraction, or try to use a possible moment of carelessness during the confusion of challenging Meiling.
Should that fail, call Meiling "China" and yell "PAD" to Sakuya.
(I know this is silly, what did you expect from a ⑨?) Alsopleasedon'tkillmeKakkaforusingthatstupidPADjoke
