Re: Akabur Games

They already have about 75% of the game translated, all im doing for them is the last little bit and proofreading the rest of the game. And from what was explained to me is that all they want is a machine translation so in some ways the way I was doing would have read clearer to a native speaker.
This seems ridiculous IMO, like, with the $$$ Akabur is making, how can he not afford a translation?

Heck, with how rabid his fanbase is, he should be able to find people who are willing to do it for pennies, if not outright free, seriously.

Going with a machine translation is about as bad as just not even doing a translation, possibly worse as your storyline you had for the game might get horribly convoluted at best, seriously.

The russian mod makers have nothing to do with Akabur and so translating what they are doing is something he has nothing to do with? If anything Akabur is probably pissed that other people are taking what he made and making it better than what he has done.

The fanbase is translating it for free

Machine translation is nothing new as people have been using it to play Japanese games here for years, russian to english machine translation tends to be much better even than with japanese, and a machine translation proofread by an english speaker shouldnt be too bad at all.

Re: Akabur Games

No heres what i'm doing for the Russians. The sentence he gave an example of is >"С мягким шелестом форма веселой школьницы рассыпалась в пыль." His translation is >"Cheerful Schoolgirl's Uniform softly rustling turned to dust." My translation if I was doing this the same way as before would be "The Cheerful Schoolgirl's Uniform rustled softly and turned to dust."

Re: Akabur Games

Machine translators for short blocks without a lot of colloquial speech can be pretty good, but the longer the text runs, and the more colorful the language gets, the worse the translator does. The parts that were already machine translated are sort of comprehensible for the most part, if a bit annoying. However, if you're going to recruit "translators", why wouldn't you recruit actual translators?

I look forwards to your translation whenever it comes. So many haters in this thread cursing your name for the free content you are working on for them.

My mistake then, from these two messages;

Yeah I asked if he wanted me to correct the sentences that came out of google translate and he said no.
And from what was explained to me is that all they want is a machine translation so in some ways the way I was doing would have read clearer to a native speaker.
I was under the impression that Akabur had gotten these guys to do it/asked them to do it, etc.

"Beggar" is the wrong word. "Greedy" is more apt. He got rewarded for his great past contributions, then got rewarded even more, and then some more, and more. Now nothing is enough for him, and he would rather get more and more money than seriously work on his projects anymore.

Re: Akabur Games

He isn't taking any extra money. If he was doing something in a way to get more money, he'd be greedy. But he isn't. I'm not saying he's perfect but I wouldn't call him greedy. If he decided to charge for his games, then that would be greedy.

He's now stretching out the development of his projects just so he can get paid more since his Patreon goes per month instead of per creation. It's greed, sadly.

where did he say he was releasing less per month to wring out cash? his track record for development isn't much worse or better then when he didn't have it it took him a long ass time to get even close to finished version of magic shop and then he just dumps it for princess trainer after it became a tumor inside of magic shop.

Re: Akabur Games

He doesn't have to state it baldly. Really, nobody knows for sure. It's just based on past performance and the fact that he's been 9 months for an expansion to a "finished" game. Personally, I don't care if he's deliberately milking it or lazy. The outcome will be similar either way, and we'll know for sure when PT:GE finally drops.

Re: Akabur Games

You are assuming that once he releases PT:GE everyone will stop funding him. There's no reason to believe that the amount of money he gets will change after it is released. Hell, the renewed interest might bring more money in.

Re: Akabur Games

Who's assuming that? The scenario I envision, if PT:GE is a dud, is that I'll cease even minimal support and never contribute another dollar. Meanwhile, the faithful will continue pouring cash into the blackhole, and people who haven't been paying attention will throw their money after it. I would not be shocked at all, if releasing another game pushed his numbers past 15K.

If his Patreon ever goes down to near zero, it'll probably be the result of a slow slide, where month after month all he posts is an occasional video of him walking to Van Arts from his apartment, captioned with "sorry guys, have not had a chance to do any work on 'Witch Trainer 3rd Edition: For Real Complete This Time', thanks to my class load and having a bit of polio."

The "similar outcome" I was talking about if he's lazy or deliberately milking it was a crappy game that doesn't look like 9-16 months of work, or whatever the devil amount of time it eventually takes.

Re: Akabur Games

If you're making all assets of a game - art, programming, UI, story, balance - yourself, that is going to take time. It's unavoidable. The only way he could get something like that out quickly is if he also wanted to to be clearly bad.

When it comes out it could still potentially become apparent that bad decisions were made along the way in terms of design and how fun it is, but at the very least if you want it to be functional and look like his standard artistic output there's no way around putting time into it.
