I've recently found Akabur's games and it looks like there's alot of people liking his work, but not liking the way he works, what's the problem is it?

^ He got 2 (semi-finished) games out within a year pre-Patreon, now that he's making over $12k/month, it's been almost a year for an upgrade to Princess Trainer.

Sometimes I wonder if he's better off just drawing CGs for commission, use the proceeding$ from those projects to finance his out of focus life and his hobbies, then let other people/his staff use his CGs and also let them do the scripting, writing etc for his games.

Similar things have been said by people for a long time. Akabur is spending time on things he is very bad at, like coding. He is using a ridiculously complicated process to write his games, like filling notebooks with handwritten text, which are then sent to someone else to type out. His main talents are drawing and thinking up funny situations, but very little of his time is actually spent on that -- besides the fact that he seems to be goofing off a LOT.

If Akabur was trying to set up a small business of erotic game production, by now he would have hired someone to do the coding for him, and someone to assist in the drawing. He could easily produce a completely new, finished game every 6 months or so (before he got onto Patreon that was more or less the time he needed for a game, and if he would hire some qualified people those games could actually be finished).

But he is not doing that. He claims he has to do everything by himself. That that is his "process". Well, it's a process he is not very good at, and it is ruining the chances for him to ever have a future in this business.

But the sad truth is that he does not really desire to have a future in this business. He just wants to milk his supporters for as much as possible, then go do something else. It baffles me that so many people seem to be falling for that. It has been almost a YEAR since he released Witch Trainer (EDIT: Thanks for correcting me Omnikuken), and in all the time since then, his work -- that no one has seen -- consisted of adding some chibis to Princess Trainer and -- evidently -- adding some code and a very small number of bigger pictures. If he needs a month to do that, that is already a lot. And a YEAR...

I have said it before and I'll say it again, Patreon has made Akabur lazy. It has a bad influence on him. If his fans would not be showering him with money for just existing, we would have seen a completely new game by now. Patreon has wiped away any chance that Akabur will give us a new product.

Which is too bad, because he is talented. But his talent is not supported by a strong motivation to work and produce results. That is just talent wasted.

What's the tax from Patreon anyway? I mean, how much of the money do they get? Isn't he like a millionaire by now?

Try installing the proper python version (2.7 or 3.x, can't check since I don't have the game) and then run the game.py file instead of the precompiled .exe file.

He already was lazy, just read his old blog. Same old excuses and procrastination.

It varies significantly based on pledge amount. $1 pledges are charged about 30%, while $10 pledges only lose around 4-5%. That is because there is a flat rate for Patreon and then a percentage for CC, etc. (At least that is how I read it a year ago, things might be different now).

Akabur's Patreon was around 6-7k last Fall, and his 10k with Witch Trainer. With false pledges also dropping some, you can assume he has been bringing in about 8-10k consistently this year per month, and maybe 4-6k per month late last year. Definitely not a millionaire :p, but doing okay. I'd say $100,000 to $120,000 a year is okay. NOTE: I don't know if he shares proceeds with Dahr, etc.

It is without a doubt true, that given his monthly model, he should be producing more for the level of support he is receiving. My thought process is that I like his games, and I feel they are worth $15-$25 or so, as such, I pledge a $1. I assume it will take him a year and a half to complete a game, so that puts me at the amount I would like to pay. That is the beauty of Patreon, in my opinion.

Re: Akabur Games

I think the best way to consider the "tax" patreon takes is to assume about 12-15% is lost in some form or another. It is true that the smaller the donation the less that is actually received. Patreon takes someting like 30 cents and then 3% of the amount pledged. I could be wrong on what the percentage is but I do not care.

So a $1 pledge would have 67 cents going to the crafter whereas a $10 donation has about $9.40 going to the crafter. Clearly it is of more benefit to have larger pledges instead of smaller ones. $10 could be given in 10 $1 donations leaving the crafter with 6.70

The best way to figure it all out is to look at the average donation amount and go from there. I was talking to a payment processor about a month ago and they flat out told me that it was simply the nature of the business that they want volume of transactions where you want less transactions at a larger amount per transaction.

I just realized one of the tags for this thread is "lazy" and "free money" :D

Oh well but what can we do? I can't deny that his art is good.

Re: Akabur Games

Taxes are different from credit card fees and Patreon fees. One of the guys at Patreon told me they take 5% off the top, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was just the typical total for an account rather than a solid number. The donations also pay the credit card fees, so on the grand total figure somewhere between 8-15% goes away before the creator even sees the money. Presumably, Akabur is responsible for paying applicable taxes from local to federal where he lives. However, another thing that wouldn't surprise me is if he doesn't bother. Based on a cursory and entirely second-hand knowledge of the Russian tax code, something like 13% of what's left would go straight to the government. That's assuming Patreon donations would fall under the heading of personal income and not something more annoying like a gift classification, assuming Russia has one.

He's easily taking home 80K+/year when it's all said and done, and that's assuming the fees and taxes are actually way higher than the figures above. It's pretty likely he's closer to 115K-120K take-home, based on the level he's been at for the last few months. It's certainly enough that he could throw somebody a few grand over the course of a year, so he'd never have to touch another python file.

That sort of income might be only "okay" in the US, but in Russia it is 15x the average income and also has far more purchasing power than the same sum would have in any Western country. I haven't really paid attention to what he is doing lately, is he still living in a slum with frequent gas explosions? He could certainly afford better by now.

He actually moved a couple of months ago, when his patreon total was around 7-8k, before WT was released. If you watch his patreon page he's so busy doing other stuff that you kinda get the impression that PT:G is kinda something he does when he has the spare time.

Re: Akabur Games

Hey people, I played 1.5.2 (english translated russian edition) and it's great. There is one thing which I can't do though: make Hermione wear the shorter skirt. She doesn't even want to wear the 35 one.

After doing the newspaper missions, she wears the cheerleader and mogul outfit, and she is even happy to wear the crop top, and fishnet stockings, but the 35 skirt (or shorter) is no-go area.

Any idea how to make that happen?

Have you done any of the Public Events for her? I would imagine that could be the issue since it is basically asking her to go out in public with the short skirt on and I didn't have any issues with her wearing the shorter skirts during my run through.

Except for the 10cm one of course, she was quite resistant to that one! :D
