Re: HRPG Heaven X-Mas Gift

Yeah thanks for the advice so far guys. I'm fiddling around with everything but there's a few things I'm wondering.

It seems like most of the menu things are edited in the Database, but will I break any of the programming or scripts if I change the names of the actors, classes, items, etc? Are there some things I should leave alone to not break those scripts? I'm guessing changing map names and classes are a nono?

Also it looks like all the NPC dialogues are all in the event boxes. Do would I have to go through each map and translate every event and would that cover pretty much all the dialogue in the game?
The database is definitely the place to start. Actors, classes, skills, items, weapons, armors, enemies & states. One thing to look out for in there, is that not everything is used in the game. You'll need to do a little detective work to figure out what's used so you don't end up wasting time translating a bunch of default weapons that the author never bothered using or removing.

As HRH* said, Common Events contains a lot of, well, common events. Here you'll find things like what happens when you put on or take off a magic item, what sound effects to play when a character orgasms, normal stuff like that. Some of these have text messages that you'll have to translate also. You can also translate the names of the common events. This won't show up anywhere the players can see, but it will help you keep track of them. In the events, you'll come across variables and switches. You can also change their names as a convenience.

Once you're done with the Database, move on to the scripts. Do not rename the scripts, that would be bad. Until you really know what you're doing, only translate stuff that's in between quote marks. In here, you'll find most of the menus, some status stuff and maybe battle text. It's harder to find than the database items.

If you translate all of that, you've made a Partial Translation and you can release it like that. As you've already figured, the story and dialog are mostly contained in the events on the maps. These are easier, because they're pretty straight forward, but more time consuming because there's a lot more to them.

I hope that helps.

@Yummy: Start small!!! Now you tell me.

To add to Yummy's advice, it's also important to pick a game you really like. When the going gets tedious, that's what keeps you moving, the thought that the game you're working on is actually worthy of the effort you're putting in.

*See what I did there, "Your Majesty"? (Heh, heh)

Hah! Even if you pick a game you like, you may realize early on that it no longer interests you. Honestly, drop it. Sometimes, you quickly discover that a game is too poorly designed or too text heavy for you to complete. It would be better to just move on to something else. I think some translators may get caught up in trying to finish a game they no longer even want to translate, and ultimately, they don't translate anything.

Here is a pretty good starter tutorial:

It is not a terrible idea to just design a quick and dirty game with default artwork. Then you get a better understanding of eventing, the database, common events, etc. I know that learning everything I learned for my game really made moving into translating Hunter's Quest WAY easier. I see how things are setup and I can follow exactly what the author is doing. I sped through the story translation (translating liberally & with a walkthrough mind you) in a little over 3 weeks. Unfortunately for the community, I feel the need to add a few scenes and tweak some events so NPCs respond to walking around practically naked--meaning it will not be released for a bit yet.

Anyways, the best of luck to you m1zuki, and please, send me a PM if you have any questions. Although Monkeyman knows more than I, so if he is helping, you're in good hands. :D

Re: HRPG Heaven X-Mas Gift

I wasn't "advertising", we legitimately closed at 100 members, people can wait for someone to leave / get banned to try and get in (we usually ban people on the first of every month, inactives, lurkers, etc.), but since so many people say its "advertising" I won't let people know when it's "open", if they're curious they can e-mail me.

"Why 100 members?"

Keeps the tight knit community feeling where everyone knows eachother, it was part of the project at the beginning, and everything we abide by has worked for us for over 2 years so we feel this is a good move for the forum. Sure, we can make exceptions, but why are you an exception? Do you really want to get in? You'll find a way, all of our members did, and in 100, only about 10 found it by paying.

I do like your mindset, you can follow logic which is more than we can say about most people, so I'm sure you'd do fine just by participating in our chatroom, someone would eventually vouch for you, but do most people bother to try? Here's a tip: 2 years, 100 members.
Sorry about that! That was my misinterpretation. To be honest, I didn't really think into it as much as everyone else. I just saw it and thought that "Hey.. That is interesting. Perhaps, I will try to join" or something along those lines. I wasn't thinking about it in negative context at all.

I understand where you are coming from with the smaller close-knit community. While I feel that this community is great(It has some awesome members), a smaller collective would be far more beneficial. Anyways, I appreciate the reply. I will try the chat room and get to know the members.

Re: HRPG Heaven X-Mas Gift

Ill chime in here and say picking your fav game is bad as well. My first choice was what i call Nanas Adventures ... that thing was murder ... well over 5k skills / items / armors etc etc, not to mention the scripting. I did learn a hell of alot from it though after bugging the crap out of 1-2 ppl.

btw if your going to touch scripts, avoid changing the rssi ones with quotations, that will kill stuff quick i found :D

As for translating skills, id honestly only do the ones that are listed under Classes at first, until you play the game and find out what other ones are used. ive messed up a few games by translating some skills that were scripted and i broke them :p

Patron Saint Perieru might be a good game to crash course on though, its somewhat small and not to complex i found.

But this is getting waaaay off topic :p

I'm starting to think that the problem is me, is it my choice of words?

Nothing I said was meant to sound aggressive or negative...

Well, I think it is safe to assume that the change to the sig caused the unintended effect. I didn't realized what caused the liberal shit-storm in the first place so I had to look back at the old post.

Why are you even doing this? I don't understand the purpose of your forum. All you're doing is stealing translators.
I am not sure when the sig was changed to open up for members, but I reckon it was still around the time of this post on page 8. Of course, this is severe over-exaggeration, but I did get a good chuckle out of it.

Well, I think the community thanks you more as a whole and it just so happens the upset few happens to post the most in reply. BUT, CHEA, Y U GOTS TA B STEALIN' OUR TRANSLATURS, BRO?! :)

Re: HRPG Heaven X-Mas Gift

I don't care for all the personal bullshit going on, in my personal experience Starke tended to blow up rather spectacularly whenever he felt offended, but that is really not the issue here.
To all those saying that hrpgheaven is stealing translators from this site, ask yourselves why that even works. This isn't about anyone being a dick or whatever, it's about differences in the community. I vividly recall instances (Virgin island and Sacred Eyes in particular) where i was honestly surprised the translator didn't ditch it all because of everyone and their cat making (pretty unreasonable) demands. That they prefer a closed community to that is, unfortunately, understandable. We as a community could be a little more appreciative of the translators we do have, instead of bothering them constantly.

This ain't even person, they're coming straight out of a bandwagon, these guys can't possibly know jack shit about me but I just want to point out, I don't "blow up", I retort in a shiny faction, and I don't feel offended, I am provoked.

Aaaanyway, the absolute final version of To H... is almost done, and I'll release it here soon, if it's ok with Captain Butthurtington and his Royal Drama Queen Krysanto.

I'm sorry if I sounded a bit too mature for you. I don't really know about what happened in the past, but, as far as I am concerned, he didn't act obnoxious in this thread. If Starke was a real liberal douche about it, I'm pretty sure the rest of the community would blow up accordingly. The fact that you still act like a kid only serves to prove Starke's point even more. It is safe to say you are a factor to why someone would want to create a closed-off community.

Anyways, 12tonweight is right. Your logic isn't even sound and it is, ultimately, up to the translators on what they want to do.

This.

If anyone doesn't understand this, I feel sorry for them. If I was a translator/serious contributor, it's what I would do anyway. No one is forced to accept gifts.

I am not even trying to suck up to get freebies, on HRPGheaven or wherever (I don't have the time to invest myself unfortunately). I just would like to take the opportunity to state that some people (make that at least me) highly appreciate whatever translators care to share with us here on ULMF.

I happened to donate in the past, and will probably do so again in the future (patreon or some such), but it's only a small token, and does not prevent me from repeating this :

Thank you very much (for your talent, sharings, etc.).

Actually dont release it. The game sucks and you're better off gone for good Starke.

So if the Commies are fighting the monarchists.

What's the army count on both sides? Is there any direct religion quotes being tossed around?

Sometimes, Starke is a pretty good guy. Hell, he's usually pretty cool. Thanks for the present i will likely waste minutes/hours playing these games.
