Re: Monster Girl Island

Oh, so you're using figurative and literal terms interchangeably. Then there really is no point in discussing anything with you because nothing you say will make sense.

I apologize for my inadequate skill in english argumentation.
I meant it, this is not sarcasm.
English isn't my native language and honestly my primary method of learning English is through literature and digital entertainment.
I also ask for your forgiveness if i had offended you.
Please forgive me.

I'll be very grateful if you or someone could point my flaw within this particular argument of mine. So i can try to avoid doing it next time.

Well, while i do agree that he maybe could use some training in .... english argumentation (?), i think the Point he is trying to make is very clear.
The visual novels i played so far didnt have an open world, didnt have something to do for me besides reading text and making a choice here and there, while those games you two mentioned seem to have such an open world and other features for you to do in this open world.

I actually dont want to call you biased regarding VNs, like he did, but the point still stands that you seem to care not that much about what he has to say, even tho he has played those games and has some fair points to make.

And thank you very much, Keep :). What you said is right on the mark about what i'm trying to convey. When imercenary told me that, i was afraid that what i wrote were really just a messed-up nonsense.

There are (fortunately or unfortunately) many visual novels with gameplay. For example:

(oops, wrong pic ;) pic demonstrating non-VN elements instead, , (scroll down))

• Ayakashi Sange
( , , (scroll down))

• Rance 03 Leazas Kanraku (actually… all the Rance VNs could go on this list)
( , , (scroll down))

(whoops, how’d that link get there ;) one is what I meant, , (scroll down))

• Re;Lord Episode 2 ~Cologne no Majo to Kuroneko~ (and 1)
( ;), , (scroll down)))

• …and the list goes on and on (you can see a full list on VNDB)

A good thing to note though, is little quote from :
“[...] these [kinds of] games still can’t decide if they want to emphasize story or gameplay. Instead of doing both they wind up doing neither well, sigh I would really like to see one succeed.”

Wooaahh, all of these looks good on first impression, can't say about the whole experience though :p.

Visual Novels really has stepped-up (or maybe down?) their game, heh?
Before, all visual novel (H or non-H) are specifically a "Novel" with enhanced visual depictions, where the main attractions are its stories and graphics (Smut Graphic for H ones), with or without story-branching, with so little gameplay or player interaction.
Now, Visual novels try to also include much gameplay inside them, some to the point it was like you are playing two different game in one.
Furthermore, this concept are conveniently used to serve a basic conversation concept almost in every JRPG.

Define 'open world'.

He has no points. Only intentionally misused terms. Theres no point in discussing anything with someone who outright refuses to adhere to generally accepted definitions.

Re: Monster Girl Island

Shush so much discuss about in what box we put this game :p

just leave it in the AWSOME BAX! anyway its already confirmed to be a sanboxie kinda game.

I really want to respond to this and continue the discussion..
But well, like you said i could only end up spouting nonsense so i'll stop disturbing you.

No! Not the AWSOME BAX! Put this into MONSTAHGAL BAX instead! :D

I just realized this thread has three different tags to refers monstergirls.

No problem! :) Yeah, it did take some time to put that post together… especially since when I had gotten halfway through it, the power died.
…Really have to get myself a UPS one of these days.

Luckily though (IMO, of course ;)), despite there being quite a few VNs with gameplay now, compared to the amount of traditional VNs, they’re still in the minority. Also—as you may have been able to gather from those Omochikaeri posts—the majority of new releases each month are still for traditional VNs… VNs with gameplay usually only make up one or two of the releases for each month. (Of course, it is in part thanks to that that the total number of VNs with gameplay has already reached a noticeable amount).

cause at some point it goes from being a VN to being a adventure game... I mean Mass Effect qualifies as a VN by some standards nowadays.

LOL, yeah, I know what you mean! :p It seems the general consensus is that in order to be a VN, it has to meet the following criteria:

• use the consistently for telling its story (examples include describing , , or )

• this storytelling needs to be uninterrupted* for a significant length and employing one of the known visual novel presentation methods such as (adventure game-style), (novel-style) and their
*Uninterrupted by gameplay sequences, not by choices or simple map movement

(Stolen from and more details ).

If the Mass Effect series meets that criteria (haven’t played it myself, only heard about it), then yeah, I guess it could be considered a VN.

Yeah, that was some acceptable criterias. But, even with this rules, subjectivity cannot really be subsided, different people could have different understanding. For example, do you guys think the following games (for this i will only mention Non-H games) can be considered a VN?

Disgaea Series
Persona Series (Or the whole SMT Franchise while we're at it)
Gyakuten Saiban (Ace Attorney)
Danganronpa Series
Atelier Series
Monster Rancher Series
YS series
Skullgirls
(Sorry, most of them are from japan)

My opinion is: Yes, Yes(Most of them), Yes, Yes, No, No, No, and No.

And lastly.. i want to talk about Monster Girl Island. I want to ask for everyone's thought and Redamz's too of course,
What would you guys think about implementing a daily needs parameter like Hunger, Drowsiness, or/and Hygiene?

Those would get annoying quickly. I'm more of a fan of getting rewards for doing stuff rather than punished for not.

Glad to hear your opinion about this! :)
While it offers complexity and strategical element in games, you're right. This concept is really delicate, done wrong a little and the whole gameplay experience is ruined!

If i were to include such concept in my games, then maybe i will make it a single parameter such as Stamina instead, just like traditional Harvest Moon. Not only it easier to maintain, the fact that it won't depletes unless you do actions is nicely convenient.

The above is simply my thought about this particular concept. ;) If you already determined to not include this then please feel free. Don't worry, i'm sure this game will be a great satisfaction either way so i'll continue to support you! :D

Ah, one more thing. Sorry if i was asking too often here.
Oh, while we are on the topic, Redamz, will there be something akin to customization feature in the future?
This is just me fantasizing, :D but it will be really cool if there are chance to make the girls change their appearance. Maybe for example when you're already lovey-dovey with the catgirl, you can gave her a cute dress as a gift and so she wear it for you (maybe only when it's just the two of you).

Re: Monster Girl Island

I totally dig this game. I've been following this on fourchin dev generals and i am totally impressed how you did that slime seamlessly on 3D.

I kinda got lost in the demo, though. where to go after i meet with the bee/insect girl who wanted to eat the slime?

You have to interact with the slime puddle and talk to Suzu again.

And yeah, I have seen you in the threads, some of the non shitposting replies you got were mine. Your game looks pretty good, great polishing and artstyle. I didn't know you had a demo out. I Will try it later :)

Something to keep in mind: have you ever read a novel that only has the characters talking to each other for every line? A novel isn’t a novel without narration. A game only having a lot of words in it isn’t enough to call it a novel… otherwise, you’d be implying it’s impossible to have a short visual novel since such a thing wouldn’t have enough words, which simply isn’t the case.

As for your list:
• Disgaea Series
No, these are just TRPGs with no narration (except for Disgaea Infinite).

• Persona Series (Or the whole SMT Franchise while we're at it)
Haven’t played the Persona games, but from the Shin Megami games I have played (Strange Journey, etc.), they have no narration (other than the introduction sequence that makes up less than 0.1% of the games), so no.

• Gyakuten Saiban (Ace Attorney)
No narration, just the characters talking to each other, so no.

• Danganronpa Series
Haven’t played; can’t comment.

• Atelier Series
Haven’t played; can’t comment.

• Monster Rancher Series
Haven’t played; can’t comment.

• YS series
Haven’t played; can’t comment.

• Skullgirls
Haven’t played; can’t comment.

Now, I’m not saying it isn’t sometimes ambiguous whether something is a visual novel or not (things like ‘how much narration is enough to call something a visual novel? 20%? 30%? 50%?’), but of your examples (that I’ve played), none of them seem ambiguous to me. No narration = no novel.

In any case, it had seemed like the thread had gotten quite derailed… glad it’s back on topic! :p
