For each class there is a specific ability (not all classes have them), cost modification (ninjas get -5 oO, but most classes have none) and block modification (also 0 for most classes). On top of that each character gets a new ability, which is most of the time unique to that unit.
The abilities are all nice to have, but most of them are not really huge. Passive assassination for Master Assassins might be nice, depending on activation chance. 3% attack to all units from Uzume is also nice, though it is still not clear if it works after deployment. Majority of abilities translate to few % increase of given stat either for all members of given class or the unit itself only.
That leads to having a look at stats themselves. Most of my team is 50cc40 so I can see very well that 1/90 stats are roughly equal to that level. For many units I have exactly same HP and Defense and one point less of attack then 1/90 units. It seems that some units get their stats rebalanced, so for instance my 50cc40 Mariabelle is -5 attack, +7 def, +44 hp when compared to the 1/90 one.
If the stat progression for awakened units is the same as before, we are looking at 60 more levels worth of stats (for platinum units). Right now stats for 50cc70 unit are lower than double the stats of level 1, non CCed unit. Let's say however, that levels contribute to 50% of unit stats right now. 60 new levels, compared to already existing 130, means we can expect a maxed awakened unit to be 25% stronger than 50cc70. It is much, but compared to the effort needed - not humongous.
My bottom line here is, that unlike the fears I have expressed earlier, awakening system is shaping pretty well and is not a huge threat to game balance. It offers a natural progression and is definitely not as broken as black unit base skills.
I also do not agree it is off limits to people who do not buy a ton of gems. 200k gold is like 2 - 3 days of Monday daily farming, 100 gems is somewhat similar for Tuesday one. Doing the event maps you can expect to easily get three cced silvers (their type match is a different story ofc) and getting a unit from level 50 to 70 is three time as much exp as getting it from 1 to 50. Rough but doable. I don't know if getting the orbs will be extremely hard, but I doubt that. All in all, without spending any gems, I think you can expect to awaken one unit a month.
