It hadn't been how she'd wanted things to go, but Annaria recognized that she didn't have any choice in the matter. When the doors of the monastery had shut behind her, she'd faced an uncertain future. The White Fangs had taken her in. Mercenaries, men and women who took coin in exchange for spilling the blood of others. These were her comrades now. This was her life now.
Ever since she'd left the monastery, she hadn't used her powers. Not even once. Looking up at what had just Arrived in Celesis, she thought that she might not have an option but to use them all to soon.
They had been on a break, so to speak, when Annaria had joined them. The leader of the White Fangs, a person named Sithis who covered their entire body in cloth and whom no one truly knew if they were man or woman, had finally found them work. That day, they'd been preparing to exit Celesis and make for the deep jungle to hunt down some band of shadowy monsters that had been attacking travelers recently. Annaria, having no possessions other than her dress and the payment she'd been advanced, had been helping others to pack. They had been in an open air tavern, which worked out fine since the weather in Celesis was controlled by magic to ensure that it never rained on the city, so they had an unobstructed view of the monstrosity that had appeared above the city.
It was huge, large as a mountain, and it floated in the sky, blotting out the mid-morning sun. Its surface gray, and appeared fleshy, and thousands of tentacles spread out form its body, some of them larger than most of the buildings in the ancient stone city. From it, thousands of tiny dots were falling like heavy rain onto Celesis.
Before Annaria and her mercenary brethren could wonder what that creature might be, and why it had so suddenly appeared above them, when something heavy landed with and earth shaking thud directly in front of her. It was a gray lump, and at first she thought it was completely round, but then it began to straighten. A humanoid shape, with arms, legs and an eyeless head, rose to its full twelve foot height in front of the monk. It was heavily muscled, flesh writhing visibly beneath its mottled gray skin. It turned its featureless head down toward Annaria, who stood only ten feet away form it, and opened a maw filled with razor sharp teeth that appeared on its face out of nowhere, and screamed at her. The sound was deafening, like the high pitched whine of something moving incredibly fast, and backed by the deep rumble of an earthquake. Similar cries, as well as cries of terror and anger issued all around her, as if set of by that of the abomination before her. Her companions went for their weapons as the creature prepared to charge at her, and more and more gray objects dropped down form the sky.
