Re: Crisis Point: Extinction - Metroidvania H-game - FINAL PUBLIC UPDATE! (July 25th)

There are actually quite a few platforms where this kind of thing happens on the regular. One that I can think of right off hand is community theaters and community college programs in the States. There are some corporations that will donate great sums of money to theaters so they can provide a community service of sorts. As part of that donation, the corporation will be able to watch the show at one point in time. So, they're not only paying for the purchase of the finished product, but also to support the lifetime of the production of the products.

So....pay the 10$ once, get the one month of updates and then the final product at release and be happy...or wait til some douche gets the game and thinks he's being funny by sharing it on the creator's thread.
thats 10$ pur update mate. NOT one time payment. told me himself thats whats he going to do =/ every update you got to pay 10$ =/

sides i made up my mind. discussions closed. i never pay to play never well. im going to pass on this

Please read the below again, I've added a visual aid to make it more clear what Anon42 said before;

First off, if you donate $10 even just ONCE, you get the game at no extra charge when it comes out. If there's any extra updates AFTER the full game comes out, they're free for everyone.

Alright, sure. Let's completely ignore the fact that I literally just said the exact opposite of what you're going on about. You're either blind or extremely proficient at selective reading.

If you stop being a Patron, you will stop seeing updates that are BEFORE the game's release - but when the game is released (or updated after release) you will get it.

Let me try to illustrate this with an example :)

1. LET'S ASSUME the game is released in March 2016.
2. You decide to become a Patron in November and pay 5 dollars for November.
3. You are still a Patron in December, so you pay 5 dollars again when December ends.
4. So you paid 10 dollars total.
5. In January you decide to stop being a Patron and don't pay anything to Anon anymore.

So, this means:

1. As long as you are a Patron - throughout whole November and December - you have access to Patreon updates: blog posts, bonuses, new demos.
2. When you stop being a Patron - in January and Febraury - you don't have access to Patreon updates anymore. So you may not get to see the newest demo (or anything else) if it is released during these two months.
3. However, given that you have paid 5 + 5 = 10 dollars total, in March, when the game is 100% ready and goes on sale, you get it for free. A complete, final version of the game - and any updates AFTER it - are yours and you don't have to pay anything to anyone for the rest of your life (although I guess you'll still need to buy something to eat for yourself).

Ziza basically said everything right. The only thing I have to add is that the $5 tier is a limited one. Donating $5 is the same as donating $1, unless there's a slot open on the $5 tier. Without that, the tier for demo donations begins at $10.

I'd like to reiterate this: you are not 'paying for a demo.' You're donating to the development of the game, and I'm showing my appreciation by allowing you to play an early version of it that you would never get to play in normal circumstances. Just how many games do you think offer monthly playable updates to their followers, exactly? It is absolutely not common practice, and there's no way in hell I would be releasing playable updates this frequently if people weren't donating to the game. It takes a lot of effort to get something ready for public play.

Think of it this way. The way most games are developed is using a small group of in-house beta testers (if the budget is big enough), and those (along with the devs) are the only people who get to play the game aaaaalll the way up until release. If I did that, none of you would get the chance to play the game at all until an official demo came out, or the entire game was completed. This is how things normally are in game development. Crisis Point and many Patreon-funded games are exceptions to this rule, because it would not exist without fan support - therefor, I put in the extra effort to thank everyone who supports me by allowing them to play the game early, despite its incomplete state.

To put it simply, donating to receive the demo is NOT NECESSARY to playing or enjoying Crisis Point. If you hate Patreon so much, or you think I'm a scumbag for not giving away every single beta update I put so much effort into for free, then either wait for the full game to be released and pay once, or donate once now and then wait for the full game to be released, at which point you will get it - and any post-release updates - at no extra charge. I absolutely cannot fathom how this is such a hard concept to understand.

I love how some people still don't understand how Patreon and Kickstarter work.

I agree, and I'll throw in that I'm flabbergasted at the number of people who attack Patreon. Patreon is a customer's wet dream in many ways. You can literally pay any amount you feel is appropriate. Yes, in some cases, these games will be sold at the end, but by my count, over half of them are set to be released for FREE. Meaning, you can play these wonderful games without paying a dime... how is that so terrible?

Add in that we are seeing the burst of English games solely because of Patreon, I just don't see why anyone who is a fan of h-games would hate Patreon. If you've gotten burned, then don't donate to anyone until you feel 100% comfortable. That is actually an option you have. It is so much more customer friendly than the purchase upon completion model.

Anyways, have not posted here in forever, but wanted to throw some serious kudos your way Anon. You've really crafted a kickass game here, and I feel it is one of the more fluid games I've seen. Well done!

Honestly I thought the same thing, that it was shady but I went back and read the argument and it makes sense. But it really does depend on the developer. Anon seems to be doing things right, but I was on kimochi and saw THIS on another game.

"PLEASE NOTE that purchase of an early access version is valid only for that version and not for future content. Please consider this when making a purchase!"

ummm...fuck that? This is exactly what Nightshade was talking about. So again, it depends on the developers. Good to see you are being fair, anon.

Still...it's enough to warrant paranoia.

Not to try and make myself sound bad, but.. I can't really see how that's different than what I'm doing? The only clear difference is that I also offer a copy of the full game at release when you've donated $10 or more. As far as beta updates go, though, that quote is exactly how they work - donations are only valid for that version and not future content. If all you meant is that I also allow you to get the full game with one donation, then my bad.

@YummyTiger - Thanks, man! I'm glad to know even other devs are enjoying Crisis Point. Must be doing something right, then!

We as devs should stop feeding the anti-Patreon trolls. When I started my thread here I got bombarded with these trolls. Everything from how my business model is wrong, to how dare I start a Patreon right away. My Patreon grew, and for a good portion of this month I was one of the top growing Patreons over 30 days. Anon, Hentai-writer, yummy tiger keep doing what your doing. The amazing thing I find about Patreon is you have so many different models, and right now they are all successful. As a fan you have options, pledge one month, pledge as much as you want, don' pledge, the decision is yours.

Can't say I disagree. I just don't want people getting the wrong impression of me, or the way I run my patreon.

In any case, time for some better news: we're about to start another stream! Feel free to stop by if you have the time and interest. For non-streamgoers, I should have some actual stuff to post in the very near future.

Can't agree more with this. So many hentai game devs that managed to get their games out because of patreon. They get motivated by that so it's natural.

I actually wish more devs would use it so that they could get their games out faster without having to worry about real life jobs (because if your game is good you can live simply from patreon alone) like the Unforbiden dev or "cough"kyrieru"cough".

Anon put actual free demos out to show that his game is real and exists. He's proven that he's not a scammer by approaching this way. He gives us a free taste of the cookie doe, once finished we pay a small amount. He's a very reasonable business man or woman lol. I'm sure it's a dude though. Anyways the trolls you speak of are probably skeptics like I was when I first arrived on this forum. I got hated on because of it. But I wasn't trolling at all. I was dead serious. The trolls you've most likely encountered are probably skeptics too. Don't judge based on their doubt of your game. Just do what Anon did and give a few free samples and show us you're not just some scammer. That's my advice, take it or say things like... FUCK YOU TROLL OMG!!!

Prove to devs your not a scammer, or hey gimmie $5.00 for free to prove it. I mean your argument goes both ways. You buy games from CD project red, EA, Bioware, Blizzard, Activision, Bethesda, all with trust and no demos. You also don't get to try the food at a new restaurant before you go and order, or try the coffee at a new coffee shop. There is countless amounts of information you can draw off of to make an informed decision. Busting a devs balls on how or where he distributes his product is a horrible waste of time. And frankly its a waste of a dev's resources to answer such questions. Lastly here is a link on how much Yacth Club Games spent on making Shovel Knight. If you think someone is going to end up rich off patreon by not producing a product you need to learn more about the industry. Also this is good for all devs to read ( ). Anon42 keep up the good work.

Sorry to hijack your thread a bit Anon, and I promise I won't do it again, but I wanted to thank SunsetRiders for this link. I missed out on this game (probably due to the Steam release during the summer sale) and after reading this piece, bought it immediately. I was going to PM him, but wanted to make my thanks a bit more public in case it led to another person reading and buying Shovel Knights. The game is awesome, and the developers are awesome. /hijack

EDIT: Also want to add, if anyone DOES read this, please consider the amount of work Anon has done in this game. Shovel Knight was a team of SIX people for 2+ years. Anon is doing this with just one other person who I'm pretty sure was not in place at the beginning. On that note, give the guy the serious props he deserves. I can't wait to play the final product, and once again, want to reiterate how impressed I am by the fluidity of the animations, movement, jumping, etc. in this game. Top notch!

Anon has made some awesome progress. I've just gone back and played the first version and the latest one (that I have, so probably not the latest version at the moment) and it's very clear exactly how much stuff has been done! Especially for one guy.

Anon, are you still going to show previews of new enemies?
Absolutely. That's one of the things I'm going to be posting about very soon, actually!

@YummyTiger, Blockhead, and SunsetRiders - Thanks so much for the encouragement, guys! Game dev takes a long time and a lot of effort, and it always feels nice to have people acknowledge the work put into it. Heck, as long as people are enjoying the game I'm happy - but that little extra nod is definitely appreciated.

In related notes, time for another dev stream!

Feel free to stop by if ya have time. I might be showing off some secret things today~
