Just because people do it for free, as a hobby, doesn't mean that translation work should be cheap. Time in worth is relative to those that deem it so. For most, it means more money can be made elsewhere if you have professional qualifications, unless you are Dark Translations for donations and you know where that went.
There is also a lack of market here for ultra-niche titles compared to Japan. It just doesn't justify all the man-hours/outsourcing put into translating a game that barely breaks 200 sales in foreign markets and will get pirated to hell.
ENG DLSITE is there to sell legitimate copies of the games for those that want to buy it and support the circles/developers. It's pretty lame to come up with an excuse to pirate a game because of language. English/Multi-language games get pirated all the time, but do you think it's because of a language barrier? How about "I want the game and not pay for it because it is easy enough to do." being the primary reason? I can understand if there is other reasons like not having money to afford, no access to a credit card, or having a working credit card on JPN DLSITE.
Piracy is a huge problem why the market for games isn't tailored toward outside of Japan. Based on sale numbers of ENG DLSITE, I am leaning towards more than at least 80% of sales lost per game due to piracy. Not only that, it hurt sales to their own intended market. That is not to say that Japanese don't pirate their own games per se. It's just not as rampant as outside of Japan and, also, the law being a bit less lenient on file-sharing.
In the end, the lot of us created a hostile presence in a extremely small market and it gives away to Japanese developers, who choose not to want cater to the many that stolen their games.
It seems like less Japanese devs care to get their game translated to English than the other way around. Maybe they think because there are few sales on the English DLsite that it won't be worth the cost. I think less people use the English DLsite because few games get professionally translated though. Most the games I see on there are in Japanese anyways...
I don't know how much it costs to get things translated, but I mean that there are groups of people willing to do it for free just because they like a game, I don't see how it'd be too difficult to find willing translators for cheap. Maybe there's so much piracy because Jap H games lack translationsIt kind of feels like you're only getting a portion of the product sometimes when you can't understand anything. We're (Non Jap speakers) so used to having to set up hook programs and modify files and such to get a decent understanding of anything.
