It's not just transportation that we need to worry about, there's also environmental factors to worry about. We evolved on THIS planet and our bodies are so suited to it that when they are removed from it numerous problems occur. So we need to be able to create a long-term livable environment once we reach possible colony sites. Sure we can build habitats on mars for short-term living, but what about people who are going to stay there for the rest of their lives? What about their children?
