Re: FTL: Epic Starr CYOA

I'm horribly confused right now, but okay.

They saw a big construct with a tiny light, shaped like a firefly, and it went "poof" within seconds yet again.
Our resident Asura might just have heard some rumours he's not telling us.

I'm going to go on assumptions here yet again:
->Whatever it was, it's significantly bigger and more advanced that we are
->It's not downright hostile per sé, else it would've shot instead of cloaked.
->It either does not desire to be contacted, or deems us unimportant/not a threat and went away.
->Water on a planet this close near a star? That either means someone bothered to dome the entire planet and regulate temperatures remotely, the star really does not pack a punch(Which makes all subsequent planets very, very cold) or we're looking at a technical difficulty and space-time continuüm will correct it soon.

Now, for what I think we should be doing:
->We scan the planet, specifically just below the surface.
Why: Unless space-time continuüm kicks in and alters reality, either someone forced this upon the planet or this is the sole viable planet in the sector. Either way this is the only planet with large amounts of sunlight, which could hint at solar radiation and thus underground building.
->We have a little heart to heart with everyone about what they think our best course of action is now that we know at the least something inhabits this system, makes me wonder why it has never been charted before. Food for thought?
->Should the scanners not reveal massive amounts of habitation underground, I feel safe to say that we at the least fix any damage done during previous fights, and maybe glue the rocketlauncher to the scudo.
->If the scanners DO turn up lifesigns, but at a low rate, we can drop in and say "hi", if it is in large amounts, we could send a message via the ship. Should there eventually be nothing, we pack up and check the next planet, as it will tell us from its composition exactly what we need to know about the system.

Endvote: F
+1. Do not argue with logic.

Re: FTL: Epic Starr CYOA

A we ought to upgrade the ships a little bit I think, as we have plenty of scrap early on to do so, which is a rare thing in FTL this early on, even if it is 2 ships, having a good 60+ scrap for either ship to use after only 2 battles is awesome. I say upgrade the Scudo's weapons twice, and take 2 energy bars, we should have just enough for that I believe, then install the missile launcher onto the Scudo so that we have something that can shoot through shields and smash any enemy ship's hull to pieces. Of course we'd have to switch between that and our lasers, it's still a good trade off and worth any risk.

If we have any scrap left over after that, save it to upgrade the Sparrow's shields unless we've somehow got enough to upgrade them a bit and power them as well, though I doubt we do.

Strange skies ahead, continue at your own risk.

The two ships floated above the planet, having no hostiles in the area he crew was a little relaxed, Yumi and Mark had returned to the commons, using a screen there to observe exactly what was going on outside the windowless hull. "Lets see if our scanners can pick anything up." Scarlet said, egging her ship forwards slowly towards the planet. "Kar'rak, I'm activating my sensors, but I'm getting some weird interference, my scans aren't penetrating the atmosphere. "

"Nor are mine, I'll try to find out why." Kar'rak said, beginning to manipulate some of the controls on the Sparrow's console.

NO! Nononono! Jack's figure waved his arms at Kar'rak frantically, "Don't! Do NOT! Press that button." He warned, shaking his finger at the bewildered Tutarin Hunter. "That almost blew us up."

"What? How?" He asked, nervously looking at the control panel.

"Hah! No, I was only kidding. But I already know why so you don't need to press my buttons." The red hologram put his hands on his hips, "Honestly, don't make this weird, that's... Wei'ad." He said, waving his hands in the air lazily.

"Then tell me!" Kar'rak slammed a fist into the console.

"The planet has some sort of shield around it, either that or its atmosphere naturally produces a layer of shielding ions."

"What could possibly shield an entire planet?" Scarlet asked, hearing Jack's report over the radio.

"Nothing, as far as my security clearance knows." Jack shrugged. "So either its a secret or nobody knows."

"You sound remarkably nonchalant about this situation. I'm unsure if you're telling me the whole truth." Kar'rak glared.

"I'm not." Jack said simply, "I can't use my sensors to find the rest though, so, I suppose I can't tell you anyway." Jack shrugged indifferently. His musings were met with a growl. "Oh, and by the way, I've taken the time to get a look at the other planets in the system. They're far enough apart to avoid eclipse effects of the planets in front of them."

"That sounds almost engineered." Scarlet said, propping her elbows on the console, placing her head on her hands.

"Oh, and the radiation output of this star is fluxing in a very special way." He said as if leading up to something, but prompted a long pause...

"Well, what is it!?" Scarlet asked impatiently.

"Euah, fine, no mind for the drama." He groaned, producing a display on their monitors, depicting the star and the planets lined up beside it. "As you can see, the planets are lined up by the planet, all the same distance apa't." He motioned, showing a map of the system. Radiation from the planet is deadly in most areas around its gravity well for any objects not protected by shields. He showed this with a red circle expanding out from the star, "But! Good news is that the stars rotation provides a fluctuation in the radiation field, like this." Within the red circle a blue helix pattern appeared, perfectly encompassing the six planets, as well as a number of symmetrical patterns across the outside of the star.

"Were we exposed to any radiation Jack?" Scarlet asked, nervous about their time so close to the star.

"Nah, fancy enough the Alger-Tek shields were enough to protect us from the solar radiation."

"So, this whole galaxy is basically a kill zone for anyone who's not ready for it?" Scarlet asked, raising an eyebrow.

"More than that! It seems exposed organic matter is disolved on a molecular level. And that's why it's scary."

"This seems oddly convenient." Kar'rak grumbled. "Scarlet, bring the Scudo close, we should dock and discuss this in person, with everyone present." Kar'rak said with a deep glower to his voice.

"Right, I'm bringing the Scudo around, have Jack initiate Docking procedures." She said, slowly bringing the Scudo closer to the Sparrow.

"Alright, I'll shoot the gang plank out to you Ladies and Engineer." Jack said, the Sparrow moving slowly closer to the Scudo.

As the two ships came close, a magnetic tether pulled them together, and a short umbilical connected the airlocks of either ship. "Alright everyone, hop over to the Sparrow, they have a larger commons for us all to sit down in." Scarlet suggested, powering down her console and stepping away.

Re: FTL: Epic Starr CYOA

Space-Time Continuüm to the rescue?

Not that I'd complain though, it makes this system jump several spots in the "interesting places" ladder.

What we need to do:
-> Our AI and the Asura know something, time for them to share that wealth.(There's no 'no' in this part, we start friendly, but it's all our lives that are at the line here, and if they are hesitant to share information, be sure to rub that in their faces.)
-> We should probably glue the launcher to the Scudo, anima hosts aren't supposed to be at the frontlines anyway.
-> It might be a fancy idea to get upgraded scanners for one of them, and proceed to scan again. If we don't know what we're facing and proceed regardless, we're as good as dead.
->Seeing as whatever we're up against is leagues ahead of us, I suspect that two series of extra shield upgrades(2 upgrades/ship for an extra layer) will give us enough time to not be shot to pieces before assessing the situation.
->Maybe, just maybe, we can correct that douche's, I mean Kar'rak's, attitude while we're at it, he should realize that his independant(And rather overly hostile) actions might just get us killed here if the unknowns don't like being poked at.

Now, onwards to speculation:
Jack=Wheatley.(Which makes me wonder if we have a bird-obessed psychopathic AI on the Scudo)
Someone did indeed terra-engineer the planet, but how/who/why is still a good question.
Suddenly the planets moves apart of each other just enough to avoid a permanent full-eclipse situation. This means that each planet will have a "blind zone" which has never seen any sunlight at all. If I had access to terra-engineering and wanted to hide, that seems rather convenient.
(Since if something is in a line of another object, shining any light at a straight angle would result in an eclipse, even if it were a needle in front of a truck, it would just be less noticeable)
Inadequate protection results in serious cases of 'dead', which makes me assume that it is the reason why there is no noticeable presence above-ground, even with forcefields active.
I cannot really make a solid plan for anything else as of yet, as there is remarkably little solid info given this update, only failures to acquire info.

("resist" Kar'rak's assertion of "dominance", but remain "open" to "suggestions" in the future. :3)

Upgrade shield systems of both ships, and upgrade the sensors for the Sparrow.

Re: FTL: Epic Starr CYOA

A-5 we don't want this ugly mother fucker that obviously has a mean temper to be leading the group, he'll get us killed with it. Scarlet seems to have a cool and level head on her shoulders, so let her stay in control. We can't have someone with that kind of temper that he's already shown on multiple occasions lead the group.

Also for upgrading we want Y, and upgrade the Scudo's weapons system up to level 3, 4 if we can do so and still have enough scrap left to power both the lasers and the missiles at the same time, but only upgrade the weapon system to level 3 and enough to switch between the lasers and the missiles if not. Then use whatever is left to upgrade the Sparrow's sensors if there's enough to do so after either of the above things, saving whatever is left after all of that. Maybe if we make one of the ship's sensors better they can then cut through the atmosphere of the planet we couldn't scan before..

Re: FTL: Epic Starr CYOA

I'm gonna vote B - meeting first, with Kar'rak bellowing at a shrinking-violet Uyard while everybody else tries (with varying degrees of intent and/or success) to be a moderating influence.

As to upgrades... 125 scrap isn't really going to get us very far... hmmm...
Sparrow
  • Engines Lv. 2 - 10
  • Reactor Lv. 9 - 20
  • Piloting Lv. 2 - 20
Scudo
  • Engines Lv. 2 - 10
  • Reactor Lv. 9 - 20
  • Sensors Lv. 2 - 25
  • attach Leo launcher to Scudo, unpowered
That gives us a better ability to run away, better overall sensor capability, and lets Jack handle emergency pilotage on our lesser-crewed ship, leaving us with 20 scrap left over for emergencies. I'd prefer to put the sensor upgrade on the Sparrow, and the pilot upgrade on the Scudo, but unless upgrading the Scudo's piloting also fixed the Jesibelle AI, I wouldn't trust it. We don't have ammo for the Leo, anyways, so leaving the weapon systems as-is doesn't affect its performance.

Suddenly the planets moves apart of each other just enough to avoid a permanent full-eclipse situation. This means that each planet will have a "blind zone" which has never seen any sunlight at all. If I had access to terra-engineering and wanted to hide, that seems rather convenient.

I think it's just a clarification on Hali's part that they're not "perfectly" lined up and thus eclipsing each other. Although I will point out that normal orbital mechanics means that the planets wouldn't STAY aligned without outside influence.

I imagine that each of the planets spins on its axis normally, so if they got sunlight at all, they wouldn't have shadow zones.

(A5? BY) (A4-B, Y) (A2-B)(A2-Y) (A5-Y) (A5-Y) Seems like most of you want Scarlet to stay in control! I have to agree, though I was kinda excited to see Kar'rak turn her into a mewling mess on the floor... Maybe later ;)

Also, apologies for the wait, I hope to be doing more as the semester ends...

Scarlet let the others go, taking the time to do one last system's check on the Scudo before heading over. The Ship was in good shape, all systems seemed functional, and the atmosphere in the ship link was holding tight. She smiled to herself, reaching up and running her thumb across the locket in her jumpsuit. She reached her arm back, cracking her shoulder. With a sigh, she stepped out to the airlock of the Scudo, tentatively stepping out into the airlock over the Sparrow. She stepped onto the ship for the first time since their escape from Hell.

"Good of you to make it Scarlet." Kar'rak appeared as soon as she crossed the threshold of the drone ship.

Scarlet looked at him, taken aback by his sudden appearance. "Yeah, yeah thanks." She said, an awkward laugh escaping her as she tried to step past the Tutarin.

A wiry arm reached out and slammed into her chest, pinning her against the hull of the ship. Scarlet let out a gasp, reaching up to grasp the arm as it pushed up to her neck.

"The fuck are you doing you bristling bastard?" Scarlet hissed, pulling on his arm, but he was too strong to just push away. Her emerald eyes burned into his. "Get off of me now, or you'll regret it."

"You need to learn who's in charge here, human girl. Escaping this situation alive will require more than your bleeding heart can handle." He growled, his free hand running down her side, resting on her hip, "Your race, and your sex are both known for their weakness," he whispered harshly in her ear, his hand brushing against the crotch of her skin tight flight suit. Her face flushed red, and she winced. "I wish to show you your weakness." He growled deeply, his throat rumbling with each word.

Scarlet's eyes flashed with anger, she pulled her leg up violently, slamming her knee into Kar'rak's stomach, and then immediately stomped down on the arch of his boot. Howling, the Tutarin Hunter stumbled back coughing, but came back strong, swinging a wiry arm wide to the side. Scarlet tried to step back, but was still against the wall.

Her red hair flailed as her head snapped to the side. She shook on her feet, but kept her fighting stance strong, glaring at her opponent. "You've got a lot of nerve you bastard." She snapped, taking an aggressive step forwards and throwing a pair of jabs, snaking past Kar'rak's guard and catching him flat on the nose.

Kar'rak howled and stumbled back, only to be followed, a hard thrust kick to his stomach. With a growl, he charged the red headed pilot, grasping her around the waist and slamming her onto the ground. He pulled up on top of her and hammered a fist onto her cheek.

Scarlet spit a few drops of blood and glared at the alien, swinging her elbow across his cheek and knocking him to the side where his head slammed into the bulkhead...

Kar'rak groaned, attempting to raise a shaky arm before collapsing to the ground, letting out a defeated sigh...

Picking herself up from the ground, Scarlet let out a groan. She covered her side, her rib pulsing in pain. Wincing she stood up straight and looked down at Kar’rak who was beginning to pick himself up as well. She greeted him with a swift kick to the kidney, which sent him back to the ground. “That’s what you get, you strong headed bastard, now you listen to my orders from now on. I outrank you both in the Empire, and out here. If we’re going to make it back home, back to our friends, family, we have to work together. We have to survive.” She said, taking in a deep breath, leaving the groaning Tutarin on the ground. “I’m going to see my family again, even if I have to kill you to do it.” She said, glaring.
(Trait Unlocked! Combat Proficiency: Naturally adept at combat, Scarlet gains combat experience twice as fast.)

Scarlet walked into the Scudo’s lounge, a rectangular table at the center already had four of her companions, Mark, Yumi, Jeana, and Uyard. She brought her hand to her mouth, wiping the cut on her lip on her flight suit. “What?” She snapped, pulling out a chair and sitting down in it with a plop. She propped her head on her hand and her elbow on the table, “He’ll be fine.” She grumbled.

There was a silence at the table, each of them looking at her, “So, what do we wanna do?” She asked, attempting to precipitate the conversation, “We’re in the middle of strange space and we don’t know what’s out there. We’ve got supplies, and a lot of options.” She sighed, covering her eyes with her hand and shaking her head.

“Well,” Jeana coughed, raising her hand, “We have a new missile launcher that we can attach to the Scudo, we can upgrade the power systems to accommodate such an upgrade.” She suggested timidly, a half smile on her face.

“Um, well, I think we should utilize this time to upgrade some shields.” Yumi said, leaning forwards. “We don’t have any missiles to fire out of our missile launcher, and we can save the scrap for something else. The Sparrow has been moderately damaged already, some of which could have been avoided from heavier shields.”

“Another thing,” Lawrence said, standing up on his chair, bringing him to the same height as the other seated humans. “We have truly terrible sensors. Honestly, they can barely sense inside our own ship, much less external environmental effects or vessels.”

“One more thing, seeing as I’m the only one who hasn’t talked yet,” Mark said, placing his hands on the table and looking around the table. “We haven’t had too many problems with this yet, but we don’t have an autopilot on either of these ships, and we don’t have blast doors on either of these ships. That means that if the pilots have to go do something, or if we get people on the ship, they can just walk around our ship.” He said, putting his hands up and trying to gauge the reaction of his crewmates.

Scarlet nodded slowly and gave a sigh, “That’s a lot of good ideas.” She groaned, “We should come to a consensus.” She said quietly, "Maybe we should vote?"

Mark nodded, “Yeah, I like that idea, this is an important first step in getting home and we should decide now, as a crew, how to best go about this.” He took a breath, looking to Uyard, “But, I’d like to ask you, Lawrence, if you know anything about this. Your home world is really really close to here. Do you know anything about what this could be?”

Uyard shivered, slouching back into his chair, “Well, a little… I uh…” He whimpered, “It’s all very complicated you see?” He tried to explain, his hands coming up to cover his eyes, “My government ban travel to this area of space, a hundred years ago, when I was just born. Since then there have been all sorts of rumors have popped up.”

“What sort of rumors?” Yumi asked, leaning forwards in her chair.

Mark had reclined, leaning back to an unprofessional degree, his arm thrown over the back, but his expression was piercingly scrutinizing.

The Asura took a shivering breath, trying to gauge the expressions of his crewmates. “Star charts have marked a dangerous anomaly in this area for the last fifty years or so, but most telescopes and satellites never picked anything up, but sometimes ship’s navigation systems would pick up things… Like an extra star out in this area, but they’re not on the star charts.”

Scarlet nodded, “There have been times… On and off where Imperial ships picked up a planet in the area, it was deemed a special anomaly though, they sent out a probe that never came back. I mean, it’s a bit far out for us, we don’t have a lot of assets this deep in space.”

Jack appeared sitting on the table, his avatar clearly chewing something, “You know, now that we’re here, it’s a lot easier to see that the sun there.” He said pointing idly in the direction of the white star. “That rotating radiation field I mentioned earlier also causes a certain amount of natural invisibility, the light actually seems to cancel itself out from certain distances.”

I thought Jack was an autopilot

A. Also, just execute Kar'rak. I don't trust him, I don't like him. Shoot him.

Re: FTL: Epic Starr CYOA

I kind of agree with CW on this one about Kar'rak, but for now we need him alive to pilot the Sparrow. So I say B for the shields and C for the sensors, and if we've got enough left over then D for the doors and cockpit of the Sparrow. While for Kar'rak choosing X, he ought to know when he's beaten and back off.

Re: FTL: Epic Starr CYOA

A+C and Y. Kill the enemy before they kill you, preferably before they can reach you, or even see you. I recomend Kar’rak try something less fight and more sex, if that makes any sense. Besides, we have yet to have a proper sex scene between the characters.
