Game.dat not found

Hello everyone,

I've encountered a problem with wolf rpg games.

I can't start them even with the Locale Emulator. It says that I'm missing a file called game.dat.

I didn't download the game in japanese locale. I'd like to know if it's possible to fix this without having to changing back and forth to japanese locale, because some stuff I use doesn't work in japanese locale and I need to have that running all the time.

I've been thinking if it's possible to download stuff in japanese locale and maybe fix it, but I can't find that option neither on utorrent or firefox.

Or use the locale emulator on the entire folder to see if it helped.

If anyone knows of a workaround without having to change the system to japanese locale every time I want to play a wolfrpg game, I'd appreciate the help :)

Thanks in advance.

PS: I couldn't find a Technical Issues subforum, so I posted here. Hope you don't mind.

Re: Game.dat not found

the game.dat file is the main file used to run the game, if it's missing then you don't have the game. also I haven't ever come across any programs that won't work in jap locale, all it really does is add support for japanese characters, everything stays in english. if the games with wolf are all failing, then I'd say check your antivirus, cause something is blocking the game.dat file.
also are you sure you unpacked the games themselves, trying to play thru a packed file won't work. if the game ends in a .rar or .zip, or .7z they games won't work. I've set my computer to japanese locale about 6 years ago and haven't changed it back. so which ever program you are running you should look to see support on those. :)

unpack that game, look in the game folder and see if game.dat is there, if it's not there, then re-download game, or check anti-virus sometimes they delete a file to quarantine. I had mine do that a few times.

Re: Game.dat not found

That will happen sometimes if your OS does not recognize all the letters in the file path. Try replacing any non-English character in the folder names and see if that helps.

Run with applocale and download the hotfix for non-unicode paths by Microsoft.

If you still have trouble, try the non-unicode unzipper on my signature!

Re: Game.dat not found

Hmm. The only trick I can think of that's been missed here is to make sure that the path that the game is in has no non-ascii characters in. So try moving the game.exe + everything in that folder to something like C:\A_Porno_Game (subtletly in naming may vary) so that there's no non-ascii characters in the path (i.e. the game is C:\A_Porno_Game\Game.exe). This is the only reason I can think of that Wolf might not find data.dat, as data.dat has no non-ascii characters in it's name and therefore only the directory remains a place where non-ascii characters may reside.

Note: especially if you're not English, you may have a non-ascii character in your Windows Username. Hence my suggestion of putting the game in the root of the drive.

Re: Game.dat not found

I've tried a few things mentioned here and in some other places, and I think I'll have to download everything (the game with this problem and Black Desert Online) to fix this.

I formatted this PC and before downloading and installing Black Desert online, my PC was set to japanese locale and the game didn't have any problems, neither wolf rpg games or any other game. So, I'm going to do that again and hopefully it's not something else that I forgot.

I'm doing that later as the BDO takes 4 hours to download T_T. If it fixes everything, I'll say something and maybe this thread will help some other people.

Re: Game.dat not found

I just finished changing the system locale to japanese and downloaded the game again, extracted and tried to run it but I get the same error.

Maybe I'm missing a program?

I have installed:
- RPG Maker XP
- RPGXP_RTP103
- vx_rtp102e
- vxace_rtp100
- 2000rtp

Wolf RPG is a standalone program. You don't need to download RTP packages for it.

If you have switched to Jap unicode but still can't run the game I have no idea what's wrong. Have you ever been able to run other wolf games?

Re: Game.dat not found

I did, on my previous laptop. This laptop is brand new.
On my previous laptop, I also started in a different locale and changed to japanese after I started playing these games and everything worked fine.

Re: Game.dat not found [SOLVED]

Sorry for the necro.

I found how to fix my problem and I'm going to leave here what it was and how I fixed it, in case someone else has the same problem.

It was a simple thing, the path's name was too long, yes, it was just that. My games were at the desktop. I transferred them to a folder closer to the root of a partition and that solved my problem.
E.g.: C/Hgames/[game's name]
