It certainly is different, and I don't know which I prefer, but 3-5 are definitely better in quality over 1 and 2. It just looks like three different artists did the last three games. And then there was the ACT which was a fusion of 2 and 3, before 3 even came out.

Probably a developer fetish, though it's also become a standard for Rio games. Personally I love those kind of situations, stuck in a small space with a tentacle monster scenes are somewhat rare.
It's a running gag. It wouldn't be a Rio game without the pot.
3rd one has the other girl in the pot as well, if you leave the island without her.
