I made a translation tool that works with RPGMakerTrans

I'm not trying to break any rules so if this is not appropriate please move it to the correct forum or delete it or whatever.

The idea is that you can translate an rpg in realtime as you play it.

Basically you link the "Translation Folder" to the patch folder with all the text files in it that rpgmakertrans creates. Then you start playing the RPG.

In the "search for original text" box you type in whatever text you see and it will populate a list of text found in the game. Then you change it and press apply. It automatically copies your changes into the correct text file in the patch folder.

Then you apply the patch like normal with rpgmakertrans.

I will put the source code up here soon. I just don't have it on this computer.

**I have only used this to correct english in existing translations but it should work for japanese.

I own a publishing company that brings rpgs and lots of other games to steam and I wrote this real quick to help my employees rapidly correct typos and bad translations.

We are starting to get our feet wet with some more risque games so I thought it might help you guys to put this out there.

That would be a really awesome feature. It is much easier to translate when you know the context(if you're using machine translation).

Would it be possible to make a script or program that allows you to use "search and replace" function to translate character names instantly.

Example:

> BEGIN STRING
\\name[アラミス]
「きれいだ……」
> CONTEXT: Map001/events/3/pages/1/207/Dialogue < UNTRANSLATED
> CONTEXT: Commonevents/204/170/Dialogue < UNTRANSLATED

> END STRING

It would be nice to have a script where you can type what to search for. In this example, the string would be "\\name[アラミス]". As the script goes through the files, if it finds the string, it copies
\\name[アラミス]
「きれいだ……」
whole string and replaces アラミス with Aramis so in the end you get

> BEGIN STRING
\\name[アラミス]
「きれいだ……」
> CONTEXT: Map001/events/3/pages/1/207/Dialogue < UNTRANSLATED
> CONTEXT: Commonevents/204/170/Dialogue < UNTRANSLATED

This would allow for quick name translation which would, in the end, make machine translation more accurate. How complicated is to make such a thing?

Such functionality is in the Robotrans tool I'm developing, but that's not been released yet because it's not particularly stable. Generic tools like Astrogrep can do it though.

Not sure how I feel about RPGMaker Trans being used commercially though. The reason: There's been an uptick in Bug reports, which I'm mostly OK with. However, given some of the games mentioned I'm beginning to think that some of the bug reports might be from commercial actors who want to make money, but also want free support for a free tool.

Well, if you won't get in any lawsuits because of it, I don't see a problem. Getting some funds for the program you started making for free would:

a) get you some money, which is never bad to have
b) possibly motivate you to develop if further, get rid of the bugs or hire someone to help you out.

EDIT:

I downloaded that Astrogrep program you mentioned and all it does it search for strings. I don't see an option to replace anywhere.

Uh, that's not my objection.

RPGMaker Trans is open source, anyone can use it for any purpose (albeit with some restrictions on the use of the source code in other products). My problem is that there's been a couple of support requests which I think are from commercial entities who want me to fix RPGMaker Trans for specific games, or at least tell them why it's not working. They are most certainly not proposing to pay me for these services (just like eats is not - not that he has any obligation to mind). I'd not be happy doing unpaid work at a commercial entities request.

In any case, it's a moot point: I don't have the time at the moment to do most of the bug fixes, or access to the games in question.

that the problem when a free tools become more and more know :x, you will alway have some ppl that will try to gain somethings from it without any works :/... i hardly see how stop that

but gambate ^p^/ we like your tools

try to look at , that personaly my fav tools for all that ^^, specialy that you can easily make search/replace in regex and validate it step by step

I downloaded that program but without some kind of tutorial not sure how to use the program... There's just too many options without any explanation what they do.

I don't really know enough about japanese to know if this is a good idea or not. Are names always spelled the same and do other words not contain names in them?

Like mic as a name vs microphone.

This tool actually enforces line length right now, but I need to make it adjustable. RPGMakerTrans is an amazing program, the only issues I have ever run into are newline and line length issues which are not very easy to address.

Also MV support but that would also be a massive undertaking.

mmm wanted to answer in PM to not pollute the thread, but cant *_*

just look in the help menu, you will find a lot of tutorial and example ^^, he look prety complicated at first, but he is realy powerfull and fast when you know how to work with it :p

i can explain some if you want, but come in PM, if we start here the thread will skid :D

You're searching for "\\name[アラミス]" not for "アラミス" so it doesn't matter if there are names in sentences.

In my experience rpgmakertrans do not use "\\name[アラミス]" in most/any games I have looked at.

yes but they are some way to make it =)

i personaly make that a lot, to have a better auto translation, i often add separator 【】 on name in all game that dont have one, the method depand of the game, but if you start from habisain rpgmakertrans files, that prety easy and fast, take less that 2 min with a game like Rune's Pharmacy by example

some exemple :

i start preparing the files, coping all text from all files in the beging section to the untranslated one :

> BEGIN STRING(((?!> CONTEXT).)*)(((?!\r\n\r\n> END STRING).)*)(\r\n\r\n> END STRING) /s => > BEGIN STRING$1$3$1> END STRING

after that that will depand of the game

example for , a game that use colored name, you can use the color tag to grab name and add the separator

and after that you can look if you dont miss anything by looking step by step with something like that

you can easily make something like that to replace name by translated one, that not realy hard ^^ rpgmakertrans files are realy easy to works with ^^

Just to be clear on a few things for the sake of this thread:

1) I'm not asking for donations, and certainly not implying you're doing anything wrong. I'm just grounchy due to a commercial entity asking me to fix bugs for a game I don't have, and this person suggesting I buy the game out of my own pocket to have a look at it (it was some title on Steam, but can't quite remember which).
2) RPGMaker MV support is actually scheduled for late summer. There's a lot of rewriting going on at the moment which will make it pretty easy to implement, but first I need to get the rewriting sorted out.
3) Robotrans also does line lengths (albeit only for monospaced fonts at present; maybe I should look a variable width ones...). Before release, the plan is to integrate spell checking and machine translation annotations from a very old tool that I wrote which literally only works with a single game. But Robotrans won't be released for a month or so, I think.

And Libellues methods do work pretty well at the moment; I just hope I never have to write a Regex like that myself.

Rpg maker trans doesn't to that. It depends on the scripts the game is using to modify text window.

I don't know what games you looked at but the ones I did partials for with Rpg Maker Trans always had some characters after the name or before which allow them to be separated from the names in sentences.

Besides the question wasn't if it's useful to the general public or not, it was if something like that was possible to code and include in some program so it's easy to use.
