I can understand the idea that marriage is a religious thing and that only those who follow the religious stuff should marry, and priests only marry those in their religion/following those religious laws. You can't exactly force a mosque to let someone sell pork on their property either.
But if you want to go that way with it, you need to completely and totally disconnect marriage from any legal rules or regulations. And that's the part that they don't bother doing. And why people think they're just being massive dicks about the issue.
Which they are.
If they truly wanted marriage to be a religious thing only, then they would have reformed the law first to take away all the legal perks marriage gives to a couple, and after that separated it.
But they didn't, so it's pretty clear that they're either not thinking about these things, or doing it just to piss off people
