The virus should be an WNCRY, .WCRY, .WNRY, and .WNCRYPT in order the virus are going to be operate it need to be execute/open first (based on malware analysis team out there unless they change it to something else it will be most likely), just be extra cautious and ALWAYS double check the file you want to open. In case you got hit, unplug you internet cable to prevent it spreading to other device.

As Microsoft said win 10 that have the latest updated are unlikely to get infected they already have patch for it (but still don't get careless just because you are safe). But for win 10 below such as 8, 7 or xp you can be infected.

If you are still afraid to get infected get your usb install your os there set the boot to your usb,

Encrypt files yourself - get them encrypted by ransomware, double encryption :D

Also, live OS is a good idea, as long as you don't have permanent​ read/write space for storing settings and data on USB that can be encrypted. Just a configured run everywhere OS, that can be lost as it's a matter of burning new image on that USB.

I think we had this talk before... But I am not sure.
Anyway, live distro that doesn't need to keep permanent data - safe.
USB/external OS that needs to keep permanent data - exactly same thing as OS on internal drive.

Also, as super_slicer said, full weekly backup on external drive that is connected once a week to create copy should cover this issue.

Most good antivirus/anti malwares should be able to detect it by now. But if you are unlucky, first try grabbing decryptors from Kaspersky's site (or other secure sources) and panic after that won't work xD

I did want to note that, unrelated to the anime character, calling Dio an 'artist' would also get you suspicious looks from anyone properly into metal.
