Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

Re: Steamy, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

Seems like a pretty ambitious project. Interestingly it has the .io domain name, which after looking it up is the domain for the British Indian Ocean territory which is kind of interesting. Something to keep an eye on.

io is used for a lot of tech things.
input/output.

Funny enough, I was going to implement a lot of stuff for supporting games and adult games with my engine. But, they were just going to be for the engine.
Technically I have all that payment process and account management stuff done and ready for that. Dwolla, Bitpay, Paypal, CC, etc. Just don't have the engine in a public release state.

What's been going on with this?

Forums were dead for a while. And this thread used to be sticky, but now it's not?

Re: Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

People realized that this project is about 50% bullshit and 50% hopes and dreams with 0% chance of it becoming a reality at any point ever.

The simple problem is that you cannot get any manner of credit card processing done since none of them want any part of the high risk area. Sometimes they turn a blind eye in some circumstances, but for the most part I would say that once they become aware of things then this would get shut down immediately after.

Maybe I am wrong, but that is how I see it. Talk is cheap, but when it comes down to it, I think this project is little more than that. I found far more use for that thing that arranged all my dlsite games than I think I ever would for pornsteam. Then again steam itself is starting to dip into adult games. So it may well just be that even if this idea came to fruition, there would be no market share for it to grab.

Re: Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

Um, it's not impossible. Pretty unlikely, but not impossible. Paid adult sites do exist, after all, and if I remember correctly, CCBill is a payment processor which is mainly used for adult stuff.

Although don't get me wrong: my suspicion is that this project probably will come to nothing in the end regardless. They appear to be aiming to be some kind of PC based app store for Western H-game devs, but I'm simply not convinced that there is sufficient market for this (given rampant piracy and the fact that it appears asking for donations rather than charging is the way to go for monetisation). In addition, the Kimochi dev team appears to be, uh, slightly confused on what they're making (unable to clearly define their objectives, at least). Further, I'm not entirely convinced anyone would want to install an adult app store on their PC - especially a shared PC, where other people could see it! Finally, their branding is... highly odd, when you think about it. Their stated aim is Western devs... so why use Japanese for a name...?

Some of that's minor points, but all together it doesn't inspire confidence. If something useful comes out of this, then great. But for now, this is still vapourware.

They made another thread. Free negative rep if you post anything that isn't "wow awesome"

Re: Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

I was actually a little worried about it because security over handling people's credit card information is a major concern.

What happens when you buy a game, and have it on your account like Steam, but someone hacks the server and it loses records of who bought what, how much credit is in their account, etc?
So then they might no longer have access to what they paid for there?
There's so many serious security concerns that take well qualified developers with a lot of foresight and capability.
To see the forums going down for so long and being wiped is a bad sign on that end.

And yes, credit card processing for adult things is a pain.
I need to take to some merchant services providers this week myself to get payments implemented for LEWD. I was thinking of extending that as something for other game devs since Patreon provides a very poor (non-existent) API and such for those things, and their fee is like 9-12% which is super high for what they offer.

Re: Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

Security honestly wasn't something that crossed my mind with regards to this, but it certainly could be an issue. I suppose it depends on the circumstances in which the forum went down. Although depending on payment processor, card details might not need to be stored.

And I did actually have a look at fees for adult merchants on some payment processors (out of curiosity), and I can't see much below 10%, actually. OK, there's some leeway there (some will give you lower rates for very high sales, some have lower rates but you pay a high annual fee), but actually Patreon's fees don't look that bad in that context. But yeah: the situation for high risk payment processing sucks badly.

Re: Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

It's still very predatory, 10%.

There are legitimate reasons, namely all the stolen credit cards used for adult sites and chargeback scammers.
But just because something is adult doesn't make it "high risk". I have a site full of adult content that had less than 0.1% chargebacks through PayPal.

Re: Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

My understanding is that there is a subsection of adult sites (basically anything webcam related) which actually is high risk, and everything else is just collateral damage. But yeah, it sucks.

Actually, Patreon is insanely fair/cheap; almost every other adult service provider (DLSite, Offbeatr, etc.) will nail you for 30%+ of your profits at a minimum, usually it's more like 40%.

On top of that, if you want to go with Mastercard or Visa, the list of restrictions is mindboggling (absolutely no non-human enemies; catgirls, kemonomimi, tentacles, robots, giants, etc. are all completely off the table), and even if you get past those...

They both charge a whopping $1000 fee just to set up, and then another $1000 to keep them going yearly (although some countries/some places drop it down to $500 a year or $500 setup fee).

Mastercard/Visa can also both remove their support at any time with no refund of your setup/yearly fee, and if ANYONE charges you back, you get hit really, really hard with penalties.

tl;dr; Patreon is insanely good fees-wise, not sure why people complain about it :p

In this case, the original complaint was due to lack of a billing API. Technically true, but to be fair it is outside of the scope of Patreon.

Re: Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

The complaint is that they take 8-12% without offering any of the API that the adult merchant services that charge 10-14% charge. And that's for "high risk", when really you can get better deals if you can show lower risk.

The 2% less is not worth the completely lack of developer tools, how people can steal what is "Patreon only" by pledging but not paying, etc.

To also be fair, if you use the PM system or email people, and only do so after pledges go through, no one can steal anything on Patreon any better than they could normally pirating stuff.

So you punish your supporters by making them wait up to 35 days to get what they want to pay for because of Patreon's broken system and those that abuse it. That's not fair, either.

Not gonna deny that sucks, but it's still the best thing out there financially/legally/etc. for westerners :p

Re: Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

I'm going to be contacting some merchant services soon. Guess I'll see.

Re: Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

Is this project dead?

Re: Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

Sure hope not, keep getting 503 errors trying to dl the program or go to the forum :/

Re: Kimochi, a new game distribution platform for Hentai Games!

It does seem to be having issues.

If it does end up dying, I'll probably end up coming out with something nice early next year anyway.

That wasn't the main part of my point though.
Even if your CC information is safe, spending $50 on some games only for that transaction to be wiped from their database and having no record of it, or it closing down due to not being able to keep the site up and losing access to what you bought, are concerns.
Steam works because you have confidence that it'll always be there and that they likely won't screw you over.
