Re: Mistress of the Jungle (xgkf) GMed by thetwo
The man stopped, and turned back around, still smiling. "I just wouldn't stay at an inn a guard recommended, especially one that 'caters to first-time visitors'. That's code for 'charges five times as much for the same room'. And that's if you're lucky. There are some inns that will charge you a pittance for the night, then sell someone else access to your room while you sleep."
Another man appeared, and it was hard to tell if he was actually frowning, or if the fangs simply twisted his mouth into that expression permanently. He might have been a human for the most part, his well-muscled form almost an ideal without the tail or hooves that some demons had, but his red-tinted skin and the little horns on his head belied some demonic blood. His hand clenched as if trying to grab the hilt of a sword hanging at his waist, but he had no obvious weapon. "Spreading more vile rumors, Kent? The guards in this city are the most honest in the world, it's the citizens you have to watch out for."
The elf's frown slipped for a moment, and came back slightly mischievous. "Well, then what does that say about a man who was kicked out of the guards for cheating? Was it because they were honest and you weren't, or you were honest and they weren't? Either way I can't see why a person should trust your word that the guards are honest. Anyway, it's not our choice, is it. The lady here can go to whichever inn payed the biggest bribe to the guards, or I can tell her that the only inn I'd consider visiting is the Empty Flagon." He gestured at a street branching off to the right.
The demonic man ground his teeth, a dangerous habit with a mouth full of fangs, and spat "Whatever, this isn't my job." He turned back to Ayame, and jabbed a finger at the man he'd called Kent, who was still grinning happily. "Just don't wander around after dark. The thieves don't wear smiles at night." He roughly shoved the elf as he moved away and towards an unmarked door.
Kent rubbed his arm where he'd been pushed. "He's right about one thing. Wandering around after dark just means its a race to see if it's the thieves or the guards who find you first, and neither one is pleasant." He turned away again, this time moving slightly more quickly then before. Ayame checked and saw that while she had been talking the sun had sunk below the level of the walls, though it wasn't yet quite sundown.
