IMO Machine translation will always be better than no translation. That is because people doing machine translation and editing it are learning something in this process. With every project they learn more and in the end they start translating stuffs without using machine.

Nah, Japanese is hard. There's no way one could learn it from MTLing games alone.

The main problem here is that he is "translating" games from developers who are already partnered with a western publisher, this game would have been released eventually.
But now even if the publisher decides to release a official version despite this, it will affect them negatively. Most people who already read this translation would likely not buy the official version.
Therefore such practises only hurt both the developers and the publisher.

So the problem is not that it is a machine translation but that in general somebody did an unofficial translation. Also as long as Kagura Games or other developer don't announce that they are translating specific title in to english we have no way to know if they are going to translate something or not. However if we do take this into account than what is the point in having a board for fan translations on the forum? As every game can be translated and released in the future.
Also as long as fan translator are only providing translation for the game without uploading the game itself, it will not affect negatively sales of the game. Because in the end if someone want to use fan translation He have to buy Japans version of the game.

Kagura have already gone for loads of games with unofficial translations, it's clearly not a barrier for them so no point with all the gatekeeping behavior

If you're being serious- you earnestly believe people who pirate a Japanese game and apply a translation to it would actually buy an official English version rather than pirating it the same way they would the original version? I don't feel like the existence of a fan translation gives someone more or less of a tendency to not buy a game.

As Para mentioned, Kagura has also adopted plenty of titles with existing unofficial translations, and other circles adopt fan translations as their official translation to expand their audience. There's not really much of an argument for fan translations hurting sales, even bad ones (ie: MTLs). I won't argue with you on MTLs being garbage, because they are, but their mere existence isn't "ruining" games any more than the existence of text hookers.

As someone who works in the industry and has the actually numbers, yes I can confidently say that bad translations and mtl does affect the sales.

There are many games that would never get localized for legal or other reasons, fan translators should go after those.

Fyi, Seryuu here works for JAST USA, Kagura's partner. So he clearly knows how this industry works better than anyone else.

If someone is investing his time in doing some translation for free, He don't know wich title are available to translate and wich are not. Also I would recommend to stopping this discussion, as if it continue it will simple end bad.
