The stars aren't right!(Helena/Courage Wolf)

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

"Status through wealth? An interesting concept. I suppose such things matter to those without a title." Jade replies. "Of course, nobility is more than acquisition of wealth. Why, any merchant might claim a right to title otherwise." Sipping from his drink, he leans forward. "Say, as flamboyant as you are, I don't think I've seen you before. Where do you come from?"

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

Mmm, asking a lady for her secrets already? Sir, i'd have to have at least one more coffee before we became that comfortable. Or maybe, those with a title think it to be more then just words on the wind at the end of things. If you want to know more about me, we should find somewhere with less.... Eyes. Helena said, winking at him and daring him to do just that. It was obvious in her own stature that she was not shy, or afraid of getting what she wanted, while Jade seemed confident enough to take her up on the offer to her eyes.

It's so true though, not being from this area, if only there was someone willing to show me a good time, and a few of the things this city has to offer. Surely such a man wouldn't think his title would be what interested a lady like me. she continued, grinning slyly at him.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

"Coffee? You come to the most prestigious tavern in Port-a-Lucine and all you want is coffee? Ma'am, I'm surprised they haven't thrown you out yet." Jade replies before waving the waitress over. "Bring us a double order: A cup of coffee, a glass of chilled cordial de remente and a glass of the bartender's special." he says to the waitress excitedly. The waitress curtsies and heads to the bar.

Turning back to Helena, Jade continues: "So you'd rather not flaunt your homeland? Now THAT is rather peculiar. Most people flaunt their origins to a fault. Well, not Dementlieuse, of course, for our land is worth flaunting, after all." he says with another wink.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

We all have our vices and tastes, this is one of mine. Helena said, giggling at his words and smiling at his excited order, wondering what was going on here as she waited for yet more of the black brew she craved, savored, CRIED OUT IN THE NIGHT FOR!

I flaunt only what I have at any moment Jade, my homeland does not belong to me, so I have no right to treat it as a possession. Though it is a beautiful place with it's own peoples and faults I assure you. she said, laughing softly at the double joke only she would get.

SO what is this.. Bartender's special? And to be fair, I tend to wander a fair bit always hoping to see something new. she said, one hand her hair back as she waited for her coffee and whatever Jade had ordered.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

"You'll see," Jade answers with a smile.

After about ten minutes, Jeannette delivers the drinks, having returned from her lunch. One by one, she places three drinks in front of Helena, then Jade. Apart from the coffee, Helena receives a clear, chilled drink that has just a hint of green, and something that looks like muddy water. "Now, see, this is how you really enjoy coffee." Jade says, first taking a sip of the cold drink, then of the coffee and finally the coloured one.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

Helena waits and eyes the drinks warily, before watching Jade partake of the drinks in order. Raising an eyebrow and smiling, Helena shrugs and gives it a try herself, wondering what in the hell she was drinking. She wasn't worried, well, about poisoning, but more about muddy water, Tasting like muddy water, and fouling up her coffee.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

The cordial de remente tastes of alcohol and of bitter herbs. The coffee mostly covers the taste, adding its own bitterness to the mix. The bartender's special tastes sweet and chocolatey with a hint of mint and something spicy that leaves a gentle burning sensation on Helena's tongue, yet compliments the coffee almost perfectly.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

I will admit, this is lovely, but I will also admit that it would be far too much effort in the morning to compliment the first cup of the day. Lest all my dishes suffer a fate worse then death for interfering with my drink. Helena said, enjoying the three beverages and watching Jade do the same.

I must say though, traveling about I have seen a fair bit of magic here and there, but None here, and that intrigues me. Is it not welcome in this land? Forgive my ignorance for that is all it is, but I am certainly curious, and if that's the case, Why? Helena asked, looking around.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

"I'll freely admit that I wouldn't even begin to know how to make the bartender's special. That's why I come here. Expensive, but worth it." Jade replies, continuing to sip the three drinks by turn. "You haven't? That's peculiar. There are often street magicians about, and many among the nobles take it up as a hobby; and, of course, the university has its share of wizards, though few others take the craft of secrets seriously."

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

So the simpler tricks are celebrated then! Wonderful! Helena said, seeming to brighten up considerably, before looking around the bar. Do you think this place would enjoy perhaps a song, and a bit of very minor illusion? I certainly wouldn't mind singing right now strange as that may seem. In fact I almost seem drawn to do so. she said, looking at Jade like she was about to hop up on the table and start a song for no reason other then she could.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

"I suppose not, as long as you keep it dignified." Jade replies with half suppressed smile. "But then, if you go all out, people just might pretend you're not doing anything unusual. After all, people come here to make appearance and to drink, not for the entertainment or the lack of."

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

Make an appearance I suppose is true, but entertainment or lack thereof? This is the GREAT Gobolet de Fleurs! Besides, you have no idea~ I may be tonedeaf. she said, giggling to herself, before she did just as she thought she might, though she Did Not stand on a table. Instead she put her fingers to her lips and muttered a spell she had gotten pretty good at. She vanished before she started to sing, softly at first, letting the sound free Without making an appearance. She felt Clever.

Letting the song carry, her voice rose and fell easily, a soft low purr to start before her notes took a brighter pitch and tone and small lights drifted around their table, small multicolored wisps of light curling and twisting slowly as orbs in the air, drifting before turning in on themselves and becoming rose hips of every hue that slowly unfurled throughout the song, and opened fully only to spin apart into a wash of petals around the table as her song ended. As the flowers settled and then vanished, Helena reappeared at the table smiling like a chesire.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

Helena's voice carries through the common room, easily weaving the words of the spell into her song, and she catches a few speculative looks from the other patrons. The flower petals come out blurry, somewhat marring the impression, but when she reappears, Jade laughs and claps his hands. "That was pretty good. I don't think you're tonedeaf after all."

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

Smiling, Helena shook her head and had her strange 3 drink coffee. I do make some effort she said, managing somehow to not be a complete ass while she enjoyed Jade's company. Which was odd....he was technically speaking... food.... Why was food being fun to be around.

Letting that thought go for now, she just enjoyed the tavern and Jade, which was important cos she was too poor to pay in gold here... So.

But yes, I've always liked Magic. I mean, I can Literally exert my will on reality, and change it. And I mean, for an area of study, it could take multiple lifetimes. Never boring. she said, sighing.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

As Helena is speaking, three richly dressed men enter the common room, taking up one of the larger tables and ordering drinks while one of them starts shuffling a deck of cards. Almost immediately, Jeanette sways her way to Helena. "Miss Helena? You asked me to tell you when Monsieur de Montague arrived."

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

Smiling up at Jeanette, Helena smiled brightly and tilted her head. And which of the three is it Miss Jeanette? she asked, holding up a hand to Jade in way of apology for the interruption... She really didn't want to pay her own tab.

Once that matter was sorted, she'd get a good look at the man, memorize him properly, and return to Jade. Honestly it'd be entirely dishonest of me to say I came here just for the flowers and friendly conversation. But you got close to the mark when you mentioned those studying sorcery. Word's gotten around that there's a group making good progress and I'd love to get an in to do some studying here. Montague there is a member as far as I've been told. But I can ruin his card game with my pleas later. Unintentionally you see I met this wonderful fellow with a bright mind and a charming attitude today and I'd rather spend the time with him. she said, winking at Jade and sipping slowly.

But where were we before I started making flowers! We were talking about economics! You said you agreed with some of the book, but not all of it. What parts didn't you agree with? Maybe I have some insight in my travels that could help. Helena asked, even while she kept an eye on montague's emotions, as well as Jade's, wanting to be sure he was the right mark for this.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

Jeanette points at a blonde-haired, fairly muscular man with a piercing gaze and good posture before slipping away to serve more drinks. Soon enough, the three men have their purses out and are playing cards for gold. Montague manages to look like the coins don't matter to him, talking about women with his two friends, but his emotions are sharply focused on the game.

"He seems to downplay the importance of farmers, focusing solely on the cities. Well, I suppose city workers are more likely to rebel, but it's equally important to reduce dependence on imported grains." Jade replies, fingering the cover of his book.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

Well you see that's the one thing everyone misses. One of the most common causes of rebellion is unfair treatment, that means that someone is getting treated much better then everyone else.... If you neglect city or rural folk, one of them becomes envious of the other group which means your own city folk will prefer imports to your own food supply. or you know, textiles, anything is applicable. people will always be resentful of one another so most regulations should apply to everyone in equal measure as a counterstep. Unique ones obviously needing to be made. Meanwhile anyone holding wealth or land or what have you it's even more important so a sense of unwelcome superiority leads to open prejudice. And of course the people need to be able to live not to extravagance, most people are more then happy with Comfort. Simple luxuries they can afford because their personal position is uplifted. No need to be unrest if everyone can have their actual rest yes? Helena said, leaning back and moving her hand back and forth slowly as she moved through her thoughts.

I mean, not everyone is going to be the same, but there shouldn't be all that major a gap in personal incomes. Your upper echelon of status and wealth should be very small while those below should be kept in reach of eachother based on how they contribute their time. If the government in place at the time is using them wisely it's paying them very well to help upkeep the kingdom. Those professions become popular because they bring more comfortable lives. Others by what your country truly values, skill of hand, or mind, or a strong back. If a kingdom is famous for it's ores and miners, then surely those other professions that require a similar strength and endurance should be kept closely near those miners. Or perhaps it's taverns and wines and other businesses. A trusted by the people spokesman should decide fair wages to be paid so that there is no argument. Meanwhile should it be ABSOLUTELY necessary to influence that decision via the crown, it should be done subtly and with care so that spokesperson always holds the peoples trusts to do what is fair and true. An arbiter. helena said thoughtfully.

subtly control a populations of comfort allows you to truly steer them in the direction you want or need from them. Allowing influence through economy as a direct tool for a countries direction. Then it's up to those who bridge the gap to speak of things to hold onto that strong unity proper treatment has earned you, so you can smoothly guide the infrastructure of the country without constant infighting. Helena reasoned personally, wondering if she'd managed to communicate that at all.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

"You have a point about unfairness, although it should be taken into account that city life offers many benefits for the commoners, like street performers to entertain them daily. I cannon fully agree with the rest, however. While it may lead to a functional system, guidance through wages and other benefits is a better way of ensuring the important trades get the best people working on them than mandating that a son should follow his father's profession, for example. But people's trust should be placed on the crown and it's officials, not some spokesperson who can use it to gain a hold over the crown. The government itself should work to ensure fairness and gain the trust of the people, not merely do so via an appointed spokesman." Jade replies after a moment's thought.

Re: Are the stars right?(Helena/Courage Wolf)

Within everyone is the capacity to lie, and some do it very well. It becomes easily accepted that ANYONE in a position of authority or control got their by being dishonest. Hence the spokesperson chosen from their own ranks to remove that disconnect. But I suppose I can assume you've never slept in a gutter and not known if today you'd be able to eat. Helena countered, leaning back a little.

I for one don't trust a crown, I look for ways to benefit from that crown but I never trust it. Every neighboring country has a crown of some kind, should I trust them all? Is the crown near me more trustworthy then the crown across the border? The answer is to trust none of them because you are the only one who can hold your own personal interests to heart. She continued. Have you met the monarch of darkon? If you did, would you trust him? He's universally feared by his own people. What about your own monarch? Do you know him well enough to say you can trust him yourself? Helena asked plainly, raising a hand next to her cheek as if to say nothing was there to trust, before leaning into her own hand and sighing.
